Wonderful, quirky place worth a visit
Oct 2020 • Friends
Had a great time here with the owners, a lovely couple who are clearly very keen on the world of wine.

Utterly different to any vineyard we've visited before, and rather refreshing. The hosts were very honest about how they manage the place, their goals and their passion for it.

Absolutely worth a visit.

Fantastic Visit
Sep 2020 • Couples
Richard and Sian are a lovely couple who make you feel very welcome as they show you round the vineyard and then on to the production facility, ending with a tasting of a few of their wines. We all had a brilliant time and really enjoyed visiting.

Brilliant tour of the vineyard
Aug 2020 • Couples
If you are visiting Oxfordshire, Bothy vineyard is a fantastic place to stop by. The owners are very passionate about wine and very welcoming. I enjoyed all stories and facts they shared with us and feel inspired to learn more about wine produced in England. It's a small, family run vineyard which makes this place even more special and their wine is delicious.

Wonderful Visit
Sep 2019
We had a wonderful visit to the Bothy. Richard and Sian are fabulous hosts and are both very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about all aspects of vine growing and wine production. They do everything themselves only enlisting friends and volunteers at harvest time, so when either talks about the care of the vines, fermenting the wine, even bottling the wine you know they are talking from experience because they have actually done it! When Richard speaks about certain vintages or blends he speaks with a knowledge, a love of what he is doing. This is a small scale operation and it is all the better for it. Yes, you do get to taste the wine and excellent wine it is.

An absolute pleasure to visit
Jul 2019 • Couples
It was a wonderful experience to visit and I would highly recommend the vineyard tour to anyone. The tour provided by Sian was very pleasant indeed and she was just charming. The following talk and winetasting provded by Richard was also fantastic and his passion clearly shows in the quality of the wines.

Perfect Corporate Team Building Evening!
Jul 2019 • Business
We were welcomed with a lovely chilled glass of Halcyon Days 2016, followed by a well informed overview of the vineyard history by Sian and a tour of the vineyard with tasting of the marvellous Bothy produced wines. Bothy is a homely and relaxing place, made all the more perfect with a BBQ feast under the canopy of an old oak tree. Thank you to the hosts, Richard and Sian for a wonderful experience!

Great tour and tasting with the grower, Ed
Aug 2018 • Friends
Came here with my U3A wine appreciation groups and what a great time we had. We started with a brilliant tour of the vines with a really interesting talk by the winery's grape grower, Ed Mitcham who is an absolute mine of knowledge, information and opinions. Ed then did an excellent tasting, explaining everything about each of the five wines we tasted. The tour and tasting costs just £10 a head, which is superb value. The wines can be purchased in the shop on the site. The tours and tastings are available from May to September. If you love English wines, don't miss this great experience.

Belated birthday treat
Jul 2018 • Friends
Just back from Bothy vineyard. A birthday present from my daughters. We arrived and Ed came out and introduced himself, and started talking about the vineyard before moving us into the field and explaining about growing the vines. Really knowledgeable and entertaining, he answered all the questions and nothing threw him!
Having walked round the vines we made our way to the winery and grabbed seats. Ed then introduced us to the wines, a sparkling rose, young Bacchus, the Oxford dry, renaissance and then the cote bothy. All the wines were good, I enjoyed the sparkling rose and the renaissance the bst. Having swirled and gauged our way through the glasses we all meandered round to the shop to lighten our wallets!
A great little vineyard that is destined for big things, they just need to ensure that Ed stays a part of it?
For £10 each I thought this was excellent value for money and a really fun afternoon.
Will certainly return!

Brilliant tour and tasting with Richard!
Sep 2017 • Solo
This weekend, I joined the Saturday afternoon tour of the vineyard and winery given by the owner, Richard. It was one of the best tours I have ever been on for lots of reasons:
- Richard was engaging from the start and welcoming to everyone, even those who turned up late and interrupted the flow of his spiel
- he pitched it just right, with a little history at the start and just the right amount of info about the vineyard and its 4,000 vines
- it was fascinating to hear about his battles with the weather, from trying to stem the ravages of frost by burning damp hay bales(!) to the problems of botrytis and its ignoble English character, as well as how he decides when the grapes are ready to harvest
- after a tour of the vineyard, we were invited to a seat in the winery where he gave us a fascinating glimpse at the complexities of wine making AND we were given very generous tasting samples of his fizz, 2 white wines (the Oxford white, made from Huxelrebe and other varieties, had a delicious elderflower freshness and was excellent), a rosé made from red varieties such as Dornfelder but without skin contact (its rich colour comes from the pigment in the flesh of the grape) and finally a red wine which he only makes about once every 3 years, when warmer weather allows.

Despite Richard's modesty, referring to the hobby nature of the whole venture, it was clear from the high quality and low alcohol of the wines we tasted that these are made by someone who is thoroughly in tune with the capabilities of his vineyard. To his credit he is also pricing the wines at sensible prices (although the rosé I bought was a batch of just 509 bottles, it was priced at £9)

Worth also adding that the tour was just the right size, about 12 or 14 people, and that he has a couple of very friendly dogs, as well as a few chickens including a cockerell called "Boris" thanks to his wonderful thatch!

Am looking forward to opening the bottles of Oxford Pink I bought on my Saturday tastings at St Peter's. Thank you very much, Richard and Sian, for a really interesting afternoon and good luck with this year's vintage!
