About
Welbeck is one of the great traditional landed estates. Set mainly within Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, an area of great natural beauty, some of the most important historic buildings in the Midlands have been revitalised and are providing unique residential and commercial letting opportunities for a thriving, sustainable community. The Welbeck Estate in itself is not a 'destination', but you can visit the following which are located on the Welbeck Estate: - Welbeck Farm Shop, The Harley Gallery, Welbeck Abbey State Room Tours, The Harley Café and The Dukeries Garden Centre (run by Notcutts Garden Centres)
Duration: 1-2 hours

Called after a fair drive down. The toilets were closed. We weren't allowed to use the cafe toilets as we only wanted a coffee and it was lunch service only. The queue for the garden centre was huge so we left without using the farm shop where i had intended to have a good spend and the garden centre where my wife usually makes purchases.
Yes.... a victim of covid.
On returning we called at arrowhead instead. We were welcomed, used the facilities, had coffees and spent well.

Expected a better service from the cafe. A particular member of Staff noisily dragging chairs around, doors being left wide open by same staff member clearing tables outside …. No regard whatsoever for the customers dining experience.
Even when staff behind the counter commented on the noise levels
Expensive dry bread egg mayo sandwich. Small portions for the price.
Could also do with some festive decorations in the side where the counter and till are.
Had hoped for a festive shopping experience. Sadly wasn’t the case!

We spent a couple of hours here and were surprised at the quality of the museum and facilities on offer. The museum has a selection of portraits plus tapestries and artefacts. One of the most interesting is the earring that belonged to Charles 1 that he was wearing when executed. We also visited the huge garden centre that also houses a couple of clothing retailers and high end gift shops. We had a hot drink in the cafe and checked out the restaurant but did not eat there. The museum is free to enter and we felt the cafe reasonably priced. Plenty of parking, again free. Can recommend.

It had been years since I had last visited the Welbeck Estate, and what I remembered of it back then was that it was a hidden gem, however fast forward a number of years later to October 2022, and another visit. This time to re-explore what is marketed from the website as a delightful place to visit and explore. To a degree the website does it's job, it lured me and my friend to visit, a visit to the Harley Gallery was on the cards, turned up and arrived at what can only be described as a "giant soulless carpark" for a corporate garden centre, one that is owned by "NotCutts" which is a frightfully expensive garden centre to say the least and is one that belongs to a group of garden centres up and down the country.
Whilst there was a free exhibition at one of the art galleries, the rest of the estate felt mediocre, dull, drab and boring. Lacking any atmosphere whatsoever. The Harley Gallery, again uses Pseudo Marketing to lure people in, and the staff in the Harley Gallery were not interested in visitors either, instead opting to talk amongst themselves, sad really, and where is the artwork? There was none, a disorganised shop is what me and my friend were greeted with, the art gallery sections within the Harley Gallery were all closed off, and on top of Jewellery Display Cabinets, was pottery, expensive pottery on the top of glass display cabinets with jewellery underneath, presented with no care.
After that, lunch, again the Café on the Welbeck Estate side was only doing takeaway and the lack of visitors can tell a thousand words, that goes without saying. So of course it was over to NotCutts, the garden centre where the average human is a mere number, the staff had no personality and the food was below par, my friend opted to have a chicken burger, me sausage and mash with gravy. In the end a staff member told my friend that there was no burger, so instead they had a Tuna Sandwich with some questionable looking frozen chips, my sausage and mash was not much better, with thin gravy and cheap instant mash, the only decent part was the sausages, again the staff in the garden centre all talking to themselves without engaging to customers.
Usually you would expect somewhere that is well marketed such as The Welbeck Estate to actually live up to it's expectations; however with the Pseudo Marketing it does the trick, lures people in, and instead gives them a mediocre experience.
Avoid at all costs, perhaps travel to Rufford Abbey which yes has gone slightly more corporate but offers a much more pleasant and engaging visit.

Really poor Winter Weekend event. No Christmas atmosphere, only 2 small vans serving hot drinks, VERY expensive items on sale e.g £1500.00 for a brooch. Only a sparsely lit Christmas tree as a nod to the season and generally a non.event. I overheard other visitors saying they were disappointed too. This is the worst Christmas event I have ever been to. I’m going to Haddon Hall again tomorrow where they know how to throw an event ! Stay away from Welbeck Winter Weekend and go elsewhere !

A trip to the Welbeck Estate to specifically see exhibitions at the Harley Gallery and the Portland Collection Museum was an unexpected delight. Everyone was so welcoming and knowledgeable. The exhibitions were beautifully laid out and curated. And the bonus of a great farm shop with some delicious treats to take home.

Really brilliant tour of Welbeck Abbey with a very knowledgeable and friendly Guide . Only down side was the paper family tree chart that was handed out. I was looking forward to reading it more when I got home however we had to hand them back in at the end of the tour ! As we had paid ÂŁ30 each for the experience I would have thought we could have kept our copies !

I took a terminaly ill relative and nothing was too much trouble. They went out of their way to make our visit special. First of all, I spoke to mark on reception by phone on the morning of the visit. who kindly saved me a wheelchair. And booked a table for us in the restaurant. Then Dawn on reception, offerd us a voucher for discount. And was so helpful, saying if we needed anything during our visit just ask for her. When we went to the restaurant.Diane had laid the table beautifully. With table cloth crackers and Christmas decor. Then Leah, was a absolute sweetheart. She collected all our food and brought it to the table. So I didn’t have to que up . She kept popping to us to check we were alright. She then kindly fetched us dessert. The service and helpfulness was exceptional. I will never forget how you made it such a memorable visit. With a chance for us to make special memories.

Visited the newly-opened Harley Foundation gallery in the grounds of Welbeck Abbey. Excellent collection of Elizabethan/Jacobean portraits and other items in a lovely purpose-built gallery with great lighting and information. Cafe/restaurant and farm shop in the courtyard. Large car park shared with Nottcutts Garden Centre (handy for a cheaper lunch!). All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Oh, and the gallery makes no admission charge.

I visit every Sunday to take one of my daughters to the sailing club on the estate. The estate is set in such beautiful scenery, I always see plenty of wildlife around mainly pheasants and grouse. The sailing club is quite hidden away and hard to find if you're visiting for the first time. I got completely lost on my first visit, but security were brilliant, helpful and friendly and showed me exactly where I needed to be. To say I visit weekly, I have never done a proper tour around the estate, but it's on my to do list.

There is no entrance fee for the art gallery, just for any extra workshops/talks.
Likewise the car park/garden centre/farm shop are all free.
Not certain how much the tours are but they are always fully booked months in advance.
