The owls nest
Jul 2017 • Family
Just came back from a 3 day stay with our 5 and 3 year old grandchildren. Well what can a say. Brilliant place to stay. Owls nest has everything you need. It's comfortable warm central for visiting other places. The playground was an extra. The animals are loveable extra. My grandchildren fell in love with them. Kim and Alan were very welcoming. Can't recommend it enough. Sadly weather wasn't too good but we still had a very enjoyable stay. Dogs are made very welcome which is a big plus With us. Will definitely be returning.

Really good family base

We have just returned from a great family week in Goat Barn. The accommodation is great and in a wonderfully free environment with animals and fields all around . Bliss!!
Thank you to Kim and Allan for being so helpful and for providing this well equipped refuge......

Fantastic place to view wildlife
Jun 2015 • Family
This was a great place to take the kids where they could see wildlife that most people very rarely saw in the wild. A good play area was set to one side for the kids whilst mum and dad could have a cup of tea. Very sadly now closed.

Alan thank you for your review although we were most surprised to see a new one as sadly the centre was closed to visitors by Northumberland County Council in August 2014. Although we cannot allow visitors to see the wildlife due to zoo licensing issues, The Sanctuary in itself is still running on a shoestring ! The animals are still here. We would however like to say thank you for your lovely comments and yes it is such a loss for the north east families that they can no longer see and appreciate our beautiful British wildlife.

Highly recommended accommodation. You can also visit (but do your research first)!
Oct 2015 • Family
We stayed in The Owl's Nest cabin at The Sanctuary and cannot recommend the place highly enough. There is other accommodation on site (The Donkey Barn and The Goat Barn) if you're looking for larger places to rent. What a fabulous place. The animals are diverse, to say the least, and all loved and well cared for. As we stayed there, we had access to the playground and were able to see the animals. I believe that private visits can be organised but you will need to do your research and make contact with the Sanctuary first. Although we loved all the animals, we particularly enjoyed the antics of the giddy goats and seeing the sweetest Thelwell ponies!

Hi Shirley Thank you for such a great and positive review - it is much appreciated. Just wanted to say to other readers that The Sanctuary cannot at present offer any more guided tours and unfortunately due to licensing issues, the wildlife areas have now been blocked off and no longer open to the public. However holiday lets guests can still use the playground and see and feed all the farm animals & horses which is always fun! Once again Shirley thank you form all of us - animals included - for your lovely comments ! Kim & Allan

Lovely stay at the donkey barn
Aug 2015
I stayed with my family and friends for 2 weeks in August. The venue is not open for public due to zoological licence issue which wad suddenly imposed on them in 2014, but as guests at the onsite barn conversion,we were allowed a guided tour to look at the rescued animals, including owls, snakes, peacocks, ending with pony rides around the paddock for the kids. Alan and Kim are passionate and knowledgable and we enjoyed it. We were allowed to stay with the dogs and kids were entertained with the playground which was handy, just outside the barn. A little remote but good location for what we wanted.

Worth Every Penny!
Aug 2015 • Couples
Sadly the sanctuary isn't open to the public but it is well worth booking one of their guided tour. Kim and Alan are fantastic, very welcoming and knowledgeable. For the price you'll get some hands on experience with many of the animals and they even ensure that everyone has refreshments and biscuits on arrival! The work Kim and Alan and their family do is incredible and I would personally recommend a visit just to support the work they do and the many animals which they home. Kim and Alan have many stories to tell and are happy to answer all questions and I hope to get the opportunity to see them again in the future! Get a tour booked, you won't be disappointed and will be supporting a great cause!

No signage
Jun 2015 • Family
Whilst staying close by, we were looking for somewhere to take the children. We saw the sign from the main road and decided to visit. After approx. 10 minutes down a long windy road we arrived to find a sign saying CLOSED!!!

Impressed we were not!! Why did they not put the CLOSED sign on the main road. We wasted petrol and our time!!

I am sorry to hear that you travelled here to find The Sanctuary is closed. The Sanctuary has been closed to the public for visits since August 2014. However, there are Closed signs clearly displayed in the village of Ulgham which is 1 mile from the centre and although a country lane - does not take 10 mins but no more than 5 mins. Also most visitors do check our website before travelling out and also if visitors telephone before setting out, the answering machine clearly advises the centre is closed for general admission. Both our website & answering machine say we are closed. Also all the brown tourism signs in the area had CLOSED signs on them but it is possible they have blown off in the recent gales. We will check this at our earliest opportunity. It is always best to check opening times of smaller attractions in any case. Thank you. Kim

Guided tour
Apr 2015 • Couples
Due to the zoo license issues at the moment, the sanctuary isn't open to the public but I cannot recommend the guided tours enough! Kim went out of her way to fit us in, we were meant to be part of a larger group but sadly some people dropped out.

We got to get really close to lots of the animals, holding and owl and a hedgehog and feeding a fox. Then we were left to our own devices to feed the donkeys, horses and goats.

It was genuinely one of the nicest days out I've been on and left us feeling so relaxed and happy.

We are so glad you enjoyed your tour of The Sanctuary and especially meeting some of the animals up so close. We were lucky with the beautiful sunshine too weren't we ?! Thank you for mentioning in your review about the fact The Sanctuary is closed now for general admission due to the zoo license issue but as you say people can still booked a hands on guided tour - which we think is far more personal & informative than just a day out and visitors can learn what The Sanctuary is all about and why we are here - to take care of unwanted animals. Once again thank you for your lovely comments , they are really appreciated. Kim & Allan

My husband and I loved our stay even though the weather was not so good. Loved waking up in the morning to the cockerals crowing and the donkeys braying. You need plenty of ginger biscuits to keep the donkeys and horses happy. The cottage was lovely and it was very peaceful which suited us both as we just needed to relax which we did. We were very upset at the fact that the Sanctuary had been closed to visitors due to red tape and we hope that it will be opened again soon. Loved all of the owls and other birds that were there. Thank you Kim and Alan well worth visiting from Norwich, will be back again.

Excellent!
Aug 2014 • Family
Amazing place that obviously takes good care of all the animals that it has rescued. It is not a large attraction but we spent a great hour there with our children aged 3 and 5. They really loved feeding the ponies and we were so lucky to see the fox too ! A real first for our kids. The play area was great for little ones especially the big swing. There is a simple log cabin that serves cups of tea and snacks for kids. All in all a lovely place to visit especially to support The Sanctuary as the money helps feed the rescued animals.
