During this Covid crisis I found that many of the pubs in Berwick require you to book beforehand for a seat. Very hard to get a quick drink.
On the way back to our hotel on a rainy night we came across the Red Lion. All the Covid instructions seemed to being adhered to. Staff were attentive. Place is rough and ready but this is a proper pub not a trendy brew bar. Decor particularly the flags on the wall are definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and the language of some of the regulars could offend. But if you want an honest decent pub with good prices and a friendly atmosphere pay this place a visit.
We returned the next night and we were almost treated as regulars.

Great Rangers theme bar. Rough and ready but good beer and friendly staff/locals. Could probably do with fixing the sign outside and a bit of a tidy up, but it does what it says on the tin. Owner was on site on both visits we made. making sure everything was as it should be, and they had Karaoke on the Sunday night we visited. Good laugh and a must of you support the team from the Govan end of Glasgow. Will go back again.

A reasonable pub with cool larger and draft beer on tap. The bar staff were very friendly however there was no food on offer when we visited around 13:00hrs.

Popped down to Berwick from Edinburgh for some pints in the closest town we're allowed! First couple of pubs we passed were closed, then we spotted The Red Lion. Colourful exterior, with flags and bunting, welcomed us into this good sized bar with three different sections. We were asked whether we had a booking but they happily accommodated us despite not phoning ahead. The staff were ever so friendly and got a good banter with us. Covid guidelines were all followed and enforced, ensuring that people could feel safe whilst still able to enjoy a pint. Just make sure you have a separate booking / table for each different household and follow the rules.
They've got a big screen for the football, a jukebox packed with all genres and tastes of music, and a pool table through the back.
Lager selection was exactly what you want from a traditional boozer, with Tennents, Carling and Stella. Pretty sure I saw a Guinness tap and they do wee bottles of wine too.
Since it's only a 40 minute trip on the train, this will be my new local until the govt dictates otherwise. We'll be back tomorrow 😀.

Not only was it drab outside it was even worse inside. We nipped in for a quick drink after a nice walk along the tweed. Beer not very nice, toilets even worse. Unfriendly bar staff. Maybe a bad day to visit but bit of air freshener wouldn't go a miss or soap in toilet especially under present circumstances.

What a truly awful place this is. I was drawn in as a day tripper by their A board on the pavement as I walking along Castlegate on a Saturday lunchtime and was hungry. I found a table, ordered a pint of real and a meal at the bar, but soon became aware the real ale served was off and the smell of cigarette smoke was very strong drifting into the bar area. I complained politely and asked where the designated smoking area for smokers was. I was told by a young bar member of staff, "there isn't one". I was alarmed by that response. It was a warm sunny day and doors were open at both the front of the pub and rear and elderly smokers carried on smoking in the doorway, not outside on the pavement. It was totally unacceptable. I received a full refund for my drink and meal and suggested to the girl they review their policy sharpish. Food should not be served where cigarette smoke is evident. The pub is tatty, down-at-heel, has very mixed up furniture & decor and would appear to be only a locals pub, not for visiting tourists. The pub appears to be trying to do something it isn't capable of doing.

Popped in just to see what the menu was like and stayed for a delicious homemade steak pie, there are no frills with the Red Lion, it's mainly a drinking pub with a small eating area, the menu is traditional pub grub, but it comes with a five star taste from friendly staff, great portions at a good price.

My husband John, myself and our DDB, Roxi, stayed at Red Lion for 3 nights. We had a great time due to Jimmy, Odette & their family making us so very welcome. The chef, Mac is an amazing guy, food was sooo good & always served with a smile. Macs macaroni & Steak pie are delicious as were his breakfasts!! If you are ever in Berwick, pop in for great company & lots of smiles. Truly a great place where you will be well looked after!!!

We visited a couple of year ago and was dismal.. however new owners Odette and famil, great staff have vastly improved this wee gem , food was great, priced accordingly sois alcohol prices. Which I sampled on the Sunday night at the karaoke,, give it a try, be prepared to wait if busy,, enjoy your visit as we did 3/4 times that week,, hope it continues in the fine manner that new owner and family have established in a short space of time,, rent rooms Odette
