- Jill KKingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom105 contributionsStunningA wonderful Georgian house set in beautiful countryside. The grounds are well set out with plenty of paths to explore. There is also a brilliant adventure play area . The walk to and from the riverside walk is steep in places but well worth the effort. But the star of the show is the house itself. We went on a guided tour led by Jim, (lovely man), who told us about the history of the family, (happy and sad stories) and showed us the wonderful Chippendale furniture and Adams designed rooms. The tour lasts an hour and a half, and ends in a wonderful gallery that has stunning works on display. All the staff were lovely from the front of house like the lady on reception and Jim to the hidden people like Deidre who keep the house and gardens in order. We would definitely recommend you visit this gem.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 13, 2023
- Sarah WEyemouth, United Kingdom42 contributionsAn absolute must-visit destinationPaxton House has been a wonderful part of our lives for many years. We’ve moved on from short jaunts along the river ending at the adventure park, to longer strolls through the woods, but we always end up in the tea rooms! The children have always enjoyed the seasonal walks, the house is stunning, and the special events (like the annual Christmas Cracker) are always well run and enjoyable.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 1, 2023
- Charles E Du1 contributionAn absolute gem.An absolute gem of a destination. Have visited many times and have never been disappointed. Beautiful, thoughtfully curated House, idyllic forest walks, delightful cafe. I’m not quite sure how the viewer below could be disappointed: this is a destination which is very obviously loved. And it hosts the most remarkable chamber music festival every year!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 2, 2023
- Sally B5 contributionsNot the best for wheelchairs!Beautiful house in beautiful grounds. If you are able bodied a great place to visit. Extremely knowledgeable house guides who give great insight into the history of the house. The house (not the grounds) is very accessible for wheelchair users just the top floor not available, however a video can be watched with those rooms detailed on screen, while the more able visit those rooms. The not so good points: not much info on accessibility on the website. The grounds are not suitable for wheelchairs, mostly grass and shingle. Part of the house tour resulted in me dragging my mom backwards over shingle to the anex of the building where the kitchen is located. The grounds are extensive and looked beautiful but unfortunately not accessible to us at that time due to having my mom in her wheelchair.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 12, 2023
- Mobile395306089891 contributionPaxton House -Great Place to visit! This is well worth a visit. I enjoyed hearing all about the history of both the house and the Home family from our knowledgeable guide Carol. The Art Gallery is a beautiful room and adorned with paintings by McTaggart and Peploe among others. I would have liked to to have spent more time on the walks leading from the house. However we did manage one- the walk from the house along the banks of the Tweed to see the newly restored Chain Bridge. It took under have an hour to reach there. Cafe had an excellent choice of soups and baguettes.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 16, 2023
- janewyatt813 contributionsA great way to spend a day.We had a fantastic tour with a guide called Linda whose encyclopedic knowledge of Paxton House, the family and the history of different periods was extraordinary. Her anecdotal narrative made everything very interesting. Thank you.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 23, 2023
- BSZJMWakefield, United Kingdom39 contributionsHighly recommend.Beautiful house & surroundings. Our tour guide was wonderful, so knowledgeable & informative. Also have to say a massive thank you- she was massively understanding, as was the couple who was on the tour with us. Our 5 month old got a bit grizzly because he was hungry and they were all so accommodating and gracious about it.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 24, 2023
- Juffins13 contributionsA trip back to the 18th centuryBefore visiting Paxton House I had no idea what to expect, having been to many old houses through my membership of the National Trust. What made the visit so special to me was that so many features from paintings, mirrors to furniture were in their original positions, which is mind-blowing! The huge collection of Chippendale furniture was impressive but I think it was the clothing which surprised me the most - imagine the renovators opening old chests in the attic and finding those immaculately preserved uniforms! The whole place was like going back in time to the Georgian period and our guide (Jim?) really made it come alive for us. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 25, 2023
- Margaret P1 contributionWell worth a visit. If you have young children the grounds where a child’s delight for Halloween. Do not miss the cafe. The guide who took a group on the guided tour was excellent. She was very knowledgeable and able to pass on her knowledge making the subject, Paxton House, come to life through the ages. From ordering the tickets online to the entrance Paxton House kept us updated by email and the staff where very helpful and friendly.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 26, 2023
- Ken Bates4 contributionsA unique guided experience, with a personal touch, revealing the intimate history of Paxton HouseThe visit was brought to life by our guide. It felt a real privilege to be walked through the interior of this Palladian Mansion, and to explore its history and the secrets held within. The intimacy of the tour, facilitated by the expert guide, contrasted perfectly with the freedom to explore the grounds and gardens, excellent shop and cafe; lunch was excellent, quality fare and good value. All in all an excellent day out and a unique experience to explore a Scottish jewel.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 31, 2023

First day of season & we paid full price entrance to grounds which was £48 for our family party. Grounds in very poor condition to get to play park. No preparation at all. Disappointed to discover the Tea room/cafe was closed but we weren’t told this when paying entrance fee. When queried we were told it was down to covid but would be open next week. No good to us as we are here on holiday. An expensive short visit when most of the paths were inaccessible and dangerous with huge ruts created by heavy vehicles. To be honest they should either not be open or allow visitors in free of charge until they get their act together. Oh and the card reader in the shop wasn’t working either. Not a good start to the season. We will not return.

Thank you for your review. We have responded to you via email to resolve your concerns. As a charity we rely on the support of our visitors.
Most of the paths have been repaired and are now reopened.
Some of our tearoom team tested positive for covid the day before we were due to open and so the tearoom was unable to open. Happy to report that the team are all well and it is open now, serving delicious scones, homebaked cakes and traybakes and more!

The lady in the shop was amazing and so helpful . We thought we would see upstairs but no just a downstairs tour - we travelled from Kilmarnock in Ayrshire and we were disappointed at not having access to the full house.
One definite bad point was the coffee was from a van and they didn’t take contactless we have not carried cash since lockdown started last year !
It was also instant coffee / hot chocolate so I was glad in restrospect that we didn’t have cash

We have wanted to visit the house at Paxton for a number of years but have never been able to book a slot on the guided tour which was convenient for our visits to the area. We thought we were lucky yesterday to get on the 2 pm tour, but soon found out it would be a disappointment. The guide waffled on for 15/ 20;minutes outside the main entrance about the house, often repeating himself, so by the time we entered the areas on show we were 25% into the tour.
The rooms are beautiful that is not in dispute, but we were rushed through without adequate time to really appreciate the surroundings. The final straw was on reaching to portrait gallery, the guide advised that ‘he needed to be somewhere else now’, so we would have to leave immediately. No chance to look at al, the paintings, we were just shown the door. I feel that the entry fee did not give value for money, nor did the guide fulfil the duty he was tasked to do.

Paxton House is a real gem. We visited it on a beautiful sunny day and have only done a very small part of it. We enjoyed a delicious lunch in the courtyard outside the Stables tearoom and the staff were very friendly and efficient. We were lucky to visit on a Wednesday and found there was a pop up craft market in a marquee with very high quality crafts including a glass blower called Jane Walsh whose work was beautiful. After a bit of retail therapy we went on the house tour with a very entertaining and knowledgeable lady called Linda who made the tour a most enjoyable part of the day. The house itself is stunning with really interesting artefacts and beautiful Chippendale furniture. .After coffee in the courtyard again, we had a walk through the Well Garden and down through the grounds to walk by the River Tweed . We enjoyed everything about our visit, so much so that we went home and immediately booked tickets for a music event later in the summer.

We visited Paxton House during the half term holiday with our daughter, her husband and thier two young children aged 7 and 4. We were staying in a nearby cottage and had searched online for things to do which were suitable for children. Paxton House comes up in this search. Although Paxton House is charming and worth a visit, in my opinion, it is not suitable for children. As National Trust members, our grandchildren are used to visiting historical properties but the tour was far too boring for them. It requires standing still and silent for long periods in each room before being led into the next without actually seeing much. It was quite stressful trying to keep them interested and quiet. In fact it was impossible to follow what the guide was saying. As a previous reviewer stated, it would have been more enjoyable to tour the house independently at our own pace and read the information boards etc. I have to say that despite this, our grandsons were both very good and well behaved but I feel the staff could have tried to engage them a little. I only knew about the hidden teddy bears from another reviewer. It was never pointed out to us. This was the only thing that interested them.
We purchased a family pass and two senior passes for the house and grounds so our grandsons could enjoy the Halloween trail. Unfortunately, we had to abandon that as the weather was dreadful. Our tickest cost £60 which included an unexpected £3.40 booking fee for actually booking it myself so we definitely did not get out money's worth.
Fortunately, the day was saved by a visit to the Hayloft where the JagArt82 team, who are resident artists, hold sessions. James and Jan were so kind and wonderful with our grandsons and they thoroughly enjoyed painting their bears for the competion and having their photograph taken with Paxton Ted.

This place has beautiful gardens with the river tweed running below, quiet beautiful.
The house entries are timed with our guide being very nice though only the ground floor is shown, no bedrooms.
If you look on the website or visitor guide you are shown that there are Georgian kitchens but having tried to find them we discovered that they aren't open.
Also the boat trips aren't available as the month of August is designated to under privileged children only. A lovely thing but tell guests before they book that this is not an option, as well as the kitchens.

Paxton House offers great walks and the grounds are now accessible after tree clearing following last year's storm. If a regular visitor the annual care park season ticket of £15 is good value. The play area its good.
The cafe under more recent management is very expensive-£8.50 for a sandwich so I suggest you take your own picnic. The flat whites are pretty average too so suggest you go to Northern Edge in Silver Street, Berwick for much better coffee and better and less expensive food instead.

I drove past the entrance on my way to Berwick on Saturday and decided to pay a visit on Monday before driving back to South Lanarkshire and I'm so glad that I did. As it turned out, I was the only person on the 11.15 tour and Linda was very knowledgeable with lots of historical anecdotes. The rooms were more and more impressive as you wander through the house and I was utterly gobsmacked by the final room on the tour, an extension fo the original building specifically built to house the family art collection. It is stunning.
Afterwards, I took a wander on the woodland walk, much of which was alongside the Tweed and very peaceful. Fotted about are information plaques with some interesting notes about some of the ancient trees in the area as well as some of the wildlufe to be spotted and I even noticed sime fairy doors.
Unsurprisingly, the grounds seem popular with (dog-) walkers and, being late October, was busy with families following the Hallowe'en trail.

We came here using our Historic Houses member.
We booked onto the 1pm house tour, the house is lovely but brought to life by the knowledgeable tour guide. Due to Covid the upper rooms are not open at the moment.
They have a large collection of Chippendale furniture and a magnificent art gallery.
Access is via a stone staircase which as a disabled visitor I found manageable. It would have been good to have a couple of chairs in the room that disabled visitors could sit in and listen to the tour guide.
Afterwards there is the delightful stables tea room with some lovely cakes.
The gardens are extensive.

Visited recently paid £6 each for the gardens , lovely borders and walked down through the woods to river and round. Latter not good for those with limited mobility , so if you weren’t going in the house would only be a modest amount to see. We walked round it all in just over an hour. To be fair the price was reasonable and fir £15 you could get an annual pass which we will do next time we are up here. Did not visit the tea room but was takeaway only.

You can cycle into the courtyard and car park but we would advise walking the tracks around the ground as they are gravel tracks and not ideal for bikes.
