You can walk right round the city walls and look inwards to see the town and outwards to see the River Tweed, the sea and the beautiful Borders countryside. The spectacular railway bridge and ancient road bridge are within sight.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was possible to walk all the way around the old town on the city walls. There were great views over the Tweed estuary and to the three bridges. However, there are a lot of very steep drops with no barriers ... so keep tight hold of any little ones.

You can see a great deal of the town and surrounds from the walls that are still almost complete. Information boards, or the English Heritage guide from the Barracks, point out and explain the many interesting features, and the historic significance of Berwick. Much is accessible, but always exposed. From the walls you can easily get to the Barracks or the Castle. Allow an hour to get round at a leisurely pace.

I walk this often and occasionally run it. It is always a pleasurable route and you can take several paths to avoid contact with others!

Great views off the walls. Hard to believe this was once the front line of England. Well worth a walk long.
