Went to an excellent live relay from the NT last night (‘Hansard’), brilliant to be able to see these shows here. So let’s get the rest of the Maltings services joined-up: - the cafe restaurant should be open before a show (this was a Thursday); - if the bar had been open afterwards it would have done good business; - it’s winter, everyone had a coat: why no cloakroom?…

I’ve been to the Maltings several times and have enjoyed each visit. My latest visit was to see the Royal Opera House production of Don Giovanni. It was a brilliant production with a superb cast and yet I could see it for the price of a cinema ticket. We have also seen major films and locally produced plays which have been superb. Decided to try this cinema out to see The Lion King (2019). We had been to the Vue cinema the day before and paid £28 for VIP tickets for our family of four but then realised that The Maltings was a good ten miles closer to where we were so booked here for the day after. Like Vue we paid £28 for our family of 4 but instead were fairly cramped in theatre seats. In fairness we are all tall people. There are no cup holders etc which again in fairness you wouldn’t expect in a theatre. The showing was sold out and the noise inside the cinema was simply awful. I don’t think the cinema had surround sound so noise that would perhaps be masked in a chain cinema was clearly audible in this small auditorium. A couple of kids had meltdowns - which you would expect parents to deal with by taking the child outside for a bit until they’d calmed down but alas not. Staff didn’t deal with this either. The noise of chitter chatter was prominent throughout the movie. I really liked the idea of this cinema. A small community hub servicing the locals who for lack of an alternative are either quite happy or resigned to using this as their local cinema. For me it just didn’t hit the spot. The kids and the noise didn’t bother me enough to give this poor review nor did the relatively cramped seats but when put all together and the fact I’ve paid £28 for the pleasure then I’m afraid I feel ripped off.…
