Good Sunday dinner - booking essential
Booked for Sunday dinner with two dogs for 1pm good job we did, half a dozen couples came in while we were eating - to be told no tables till 3:30. Very friendly staff. Two Sunday dinners one chicken one brisket both very good, nothing fancy just good proper food.

    Great Sunday Dinner
We booked Sunday dinner here and we’re not disappointed. Both of us had beef my wife had the brisket and I had the sirloin. Both were very good but would say the brisket was better and if you don’t like your beef served pink go for the brisket. A huge plate full of delicious meat and veg AND a lovely additional pot of gravy. We were too full for pudding but they looked delicious. Staff were also lovely.

    Great place to visit
Great options on the menu, the food was delicious and good value for money. We chose this pub as it was dog friendly but we’d definitely be back without our dog. Staff were very friendly and welcoming.

    Great food
It was very busy but we were told if we came at 8 pm they would fit us in and so pleased they did as the meal was excellent. Staff were very friendly and the pub had a good atmosphere. My husband & I had different meals and thought they were the best we had in along time. Would certainly recommend and definitely hope to go back when we next visit the area.

    Fabulous food and staff
Fabulous pub in the middle of Alnwick. So good in fact we ate there 3 times in 5 days. The steak was perfectly cooked and well presented as was their Sunday lunch. Staff are really friendly and attentive and listen when you ask for slight adjustments to the food. I'd love to have this pub nearer my home......or perhaps not, I'd be in there too often

    Top Notch Food
Great staff, food to die for and to be able to eat without a booking . On entering the Market Tavern , the manager (we think) couldn't be any more helpful. Come in sit down and relax, the two girls who wait on, absolutely outstanding, relaxed ,smiling, happy and customer service perfect well done !!! Next the food , Shepherds pie wow so delicious amazing, and chilli curry and rice wow even creme fresh and jalapeños amazing. So much food for so little money. Best place in Alnwick to East, Drink & Stay .

    Couldn't ask for more!
Delicious Sunday dinner, we were so full all day we didn't need tea! Healthy portion, good amount of veg / potatoes. Beef was cooked perfectly. Couldn't fault a thing. My husband had a burger which he rated in his top 10 (he's had alot of burgers worldwide!) Children's meal was good value and demolished so I think he gives it 5 out of 5 too. Would visit again when in the area

'Kronk' polishes off a dish of brisket.
We spent many hours in Barter Bookshop before popping into The Market Tavern for Sunday lunch. At the table next to ours was a friendly chap with a beautiful bulldog called Kronk. The beer and the service were exceptional but the roast sirloin of beef served pink with a fine array of crispy roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, meaty gravy and succulent vegetables were out of this world. Wonderful value and a perfect last day for our holiday in Northumberland.

    Fabulous!
I would highly recommend The Market Tavern. We booked a table for an evening meal and we weren't disappointed. The food and the staff are second to none. We had starters of Spam Fritters and Kipper pate followed by braised beef and venison. Very good portions and value for money. The food was amazing and Liam, the young guy who was looking after our table was great. He was happy to help us with suggestions on what to eat and also suggested the best wine to go with our meal which was spot on. There is a really nice atmosphere too.

    Great lace to eat
Came across the Market Tavern whilst having a day in Alnwick. Great place !! Wonderful place - great staff, FABULOUS food. I had the belly pork which was to die for . Wife had the fillet steak - cooked to perfection. Will definitely return when back in the area. Would give 6 stars if I could. Best meal we’ve had all week.

I hate leaving bad reviews, but sorry Sunday lunch was terrible! Myself, daughter's and mother in law ordered the chicken, it came with what i can only describe as a lump of chicken with soggy skin and a heap of bones stuck on top of our dinner, tried to remove the chicken heap so we could just eat the mash and veg, but bone and chicken inners was left all over them, had to send them back, next plate was slightly better but i found tiny bones in my veg, if it was a child or older person they could of choked. Mash and veg were tasteless and the yorkshire pudding was horrible. The poor young lad that served us was lovely and apologised, when we were leaving he was telling someone who i think was the landlady ( foreign accent ) who couldn't of cared less, no apology from her, heard her say something about thats what we ordered. She doest deserve paying customers if thats her attitude. If i could give -5 stars i would.

We are local to Alnwick and have been to the Market Tavern many times for drinks and to eat in the restaurant. It’s always been very nice....so we decided to go today for lunch. As we had our dog with us we couldn’t eat in the restaurant so knew we would eat in the bar. If you are eating a meal then the small round bistro type tables are a bit small for 2 plates so we asked if we could sit at the large table which was free. We were told no without any apology.....just in case a party of 4 came in. So Market Tavern, you lost our custom of 2 lunches and at least 2 drinks just because 4 people ‘might’ have come in. As I said, we are local and come to Alnwick for lunches regularly 12 months a year, not just on holiday.
If this is a policy, maybe you ought to re think it as it is very unlikely we will come back.

We visited the market tavern for our daughters 13 th birthday. It looked like a nice place, cosy and had good Covid precautions, clean with hand sanitiser at the entrance. That was as good as it got I m afraid. I ordered the venison, my daughter a steak. The venison, when it eventually arrived, was black. I tried to cut a piece off and really struggled. Finally I managed to put a piece in my mouth, I chewed and chewed, two minutes later I was still chewing the first piece of venison. In the end I gave up and left most of it. So I paid £19 for a venison that was inedible. My daughters steak was similar. Really, don’t bother going. The joiners inn and horseshoe inn are much better.

Had a really nice night at the Tavern. We had two rooms booked and they were both spotless, had immaculate bedding and were a good size. The towels were large and shower was easy to use. Four of us had a meal in the restaurant and we were all delighted with our choices, the quality of the food and the portion sizes. We only managed one course each and two shared a dessert. The house Pino Grigio was well chilled and the service was excellent. We moved to the bar and had a couple of cocktails which were really good particularly the Amble Bramble which I will be returning to try again. All staff were pleasant and helpful.

Booked a table for 7pm on a recent visit to Alnwick. We were shown a small table by the quiz machine on the ground floor and asked to be moved to an alternative table (as did two other couples who were also offered the same table while we were there). Gave our drinks order and then ordered food. Menus taken away and cutlery arrived. By 7.50pm we decided we'd better ask if our food was on the way. Amidst much dashing around, checking the orders on the nail and the register, we were asked "who took your order?" It turned out that no-one accepted any responsibility for taking the order and felt very much like we were imagining the whole thing, although why we'd been given cultelry and the fact that we'd sat for 50 minutes without anyone asking us if things were ok seemed questionable. The 'order' had simply disappeared and nothing had been sent to the kitchen. The waitress/supervisor was very apologetic (unlike the two members of staff who'd done the drinks and food order)and 'rushed' through our food order as well as comp'ing the drinks but we felt extremely puzzled as to why no-one seemed to take responsibility for actually taking our order. Food (slow cooked beef) was very good although appetite and patience tipped the balance. Not a good experience and we wouldn't;t return sadly.

So disappointing. This had been recommended as a vegan option while we were visiting Alnwick.
The waitress couldn't have been better but she was up against it with the chef's lack of desire to cater for vegans.
There was a cauliflower starter and a cauliflower main. There was an aubergine main and a chilli. It was one if the hottest nights so chilli wasn't an option.
We ordered the bread and olives for a shared starter, it came out with a huge slab of butter, they don't have vegan spreads. It was huge, enough for 4, there was 2 of us.
My main, the cauliflower, everything was dripping in oil, I couldn't eat it. The waitess offered to change it but it transpired the aubergine option was marinated in oil and the cauliflower starter was deep fried.
I ended up having fresh fruit and sorbet which was very nice but I was taking part in a 26 mile charity walk the next day so not exactly the fuel I needed.
The waitress (Elsie) was brilliant but the chef needs to buck their ideas up.

Our daughter booked this meal for us using the list of establishments involved in the "Eat out to help out" scheme. When we were presented with the bill there was no discount at all. The waiter could not explain why, except that it had been too complicated to half the prices. There was a small notice on a door saying that they were not offering the discount. The food was okay, but needless to say we left feeling as if we had been robbed. Very underhand. Obviously we would never recommend such a place.

Firstly this restaurant IS Covid safe. Track and trace, hand sanitiser, distanced tables and face masks.
Now the important bit.....
One of the best meals that we have had in a long time. The steaks were really well cooked, medium rare and the cauliflower cheese as a side dish is exceptional. Attentive but not intrusive service and a nice drop of wine.
All in all a great evening - cut short only by the curfew. If you want well cooked honest food - this place will be right up your street. No pretence or airs and yes we would probably have walked past - but it was recommended and lived up to its reputation.

We (my son and I) were on a three day photography trip. While I have to say that the ensuit was really tight and the shower was atrocious to get set to the correct temperature, the room was however fine with clean linin and plenty of towels and firm but comfortable beds.
The room was on the front of the property which did mean noise from the road on bin day because it was warm and we needed the windows open but we were up early to get morning shots so this was not an issue. Putting the preceding into context, we did choose the least expensive room option, so these comments do have to be put in context.
The staff were very helpful despite clearly being very busy (being close to the end of lock down) and showed an interest in our reason for our stay which was nice.
I was a bit concerned about parking due to the system that the town uses but this proved to not be an issue at all!
The best thing about this establishment is the food! Well prepared, extensive menu with a great selection available and with very "hearty" sized portions! We did make an error in not booking a table for the second evening which was a big mistake, by comparison, the meal we had at a competing establishment was mean in size and average at best in quality with poor service!
The most important question...would I stay here again?...YES!

We ended up here because the restaurant we had been hoping to go to was very poorly organised and we gave up waiting to get a table. We were so glad this happened. The food was amazing and the staff were very helpful. My partner had slow cooked braised brisket with vegetables, and I had mushrooms with goats cheese, new potatoes and salad. Both were absolutely delicious. The food took quite a while to arrive, and it was clear that there was a backlog in the kitchen due to the extreme heat. They had to turn potential diners away in order to fulfil the orders they had already taken. It was well worth the wait, and we’d like to thank the staff for coping in the difficult circumstances in which they were working. We’d highly recommend and would certainly return given the opportunity.
