The pub was almost empty when we arrived, but quickly filled up. Had a good pint of Wainwright from the small selection of ales.

The menu is large, taking in sandwiches, pub classics, local specialities and a steak selection.

We shared some Korean crumbed chicken wings with hot chilli sauce to start. Hit and crispy, falling off the bone, dressed with eye-wateringly hot sriracha sauce.

We opted for local fayre, a Geordie chop ( for Yorkshire folk, this is a Barnsley chop) with red wine and mint jelly gravy, and braised shin beef. Both were good, although the lamb a little overdone, the pan haggerty which came with it was exceptional, better than the mash with the braised beef which contained a variety of textures. The beef was generously portioned, to be honest they could have served half as much and I’d still have thought it good value.

It’s obviously a popular venue, good food and generous at a decent price, we really enjoyed it and would visit again.

We (my son and I) were on a three day photography trip. While I have to say that the ensuit was really tight and the shower was atrocious to get set to the correct temperature, the room was however fine with clean linin and plenty of towels and firm but comfortable beds.
The room was on the front of the property which did mean noise from the road on bin day because it was warm and we needed the windows open but we were up early to get morning shots so this was not an issue. Putting the preceding into context, we did choose the least expensive room option, so these comments do have to be put in context.
The staff were very helpful despite clearly being very busy (being close to the end of lock down) and showed an interest in our reason for our stay which was nice.
I was a bit concerned about parking due to the system that the town uses but this proved to not be an issue at all!
The best thing about this establishment is the food! Well prepared, extensive menu with a great selection available and with very "hearty" sized portions! We did make an error in not booking a table for the second evening which was a big mistake, by comparison, the meal we had at a competing establishment was mean in size and average at best in quality with poor service!
The most important question...would I stay here again?...YES!

Having enjoyed a day out with my wife we decided to drop in at
Alnwick and opted for the Market Tavern. We were not disappointed, we both went for the belly pork on a bed of mash with buttered cabbage.
It was superb, the generous lump of pork was topped with a delicious piece of perfectly cooked crackling.
Added to this was a side of splendid fresh onion rings. We would definitely return and highly recommend this pub.

Booked a table for 7pm on a recent visit to Alnwick. We were shown a small table by the quiz machine on the ground floor and asked to be moved to an alternative table (as did two other couples who were also offered the same table while we were there). Gave our drinks order and then ordered food. Menus taken away and cutlery arrived. By 7.50pm we decided we'd better ask if our food was on the way. Amidst much dashing around, checking the orders on the nail and the register, we were asked "who took your order?" It turned out that no-one accepted any responsibility for taking the order and felt very much like we were imagining the whole thing, although why we'd been given cultelry and the fact that we'd sat for 50 minutes without anyone asking us if things were ok seemed questionable. The 'order' had simply disappeared and nothing had been sent to the kitchen. The waitress/supervisor was very apologetic (unlike the two members of staff who'd done the drinks and food order)and 'rushed' through our food order as well as comp'ing the drinks but we felt extremely puzzled as to why no-one seemed to take responsibility for actually taking our order. Food (slow cooked beef) was very good although appetite and patience tipped the balance. Not a good experience and we wouldn't;t return sadly.

So disappointing. This had been recommended as a vegan option while we were visiting Alnwick.
The waitress couldn't have been better but she was up against it with the chef's lack of desire to cater for vegans.
There was a cauliflower starter and a cauliflower main. There was an aubergine main and a chilli. It was one if the hottest nights so chilli wasn't an option.
We ordered the bread and olives for a shared starter, it came out with a huge slab of butter, they don't have vegan spreads. It was huge, enough for 4, there was 2 of us.
My main, the cauliflower, everything was dripping in oil, I couldn't eat it. The waitess offered to change it but it transpired the aubergine option was marinated in oil and the cauliflower starter was deep fried.
I ended up having fresh fruit and sorbet which was very nice but I was taking part in a 26 mile charity walk the next day so not exactly the fuel I needed.
The waitress (Elsie) was brilliant but the chef needs to buck their ideas up.

I hate leaving bad reviews, but sorry Sunday lunch was terrible! Myself, daughter's and mother in law ordered the chicken, it came with what i can only describe as a lump of chicken with soggy skin and a heap of bones stuck on top of our dinner, tried to remove the chicken heap so we could just eat the mash and veg, but bone and chicken inners was left all over them, had to send them back, next plate was slightly better but i found tiny bones in my veg, if it was a child or older person they could of choked. Mash and veg were tasteless and the yorkshire pudding was horrible. The poor young lad that served us was lovely and apologised, when we were leaving he was telling someone who i think was the landlady ( foreign accent ) who couldn't of cared less, no apology from her, heard her say something about thats what we ordered. She doest deserve paying customers if thats her attitude. If i could give -5 stars i would.

We visited the market tavern for our daughters 13 th birthday. It looked like a nice place, cosy and had good Covid precautions, clean with hand sanitiser at the entrance. That was as good as it got I m afraid. I ordered the venison, my daughter a steak. The venison, when it eventually arrived, was black. I tried to cut a piece off and really struggled. Finally I managed to put a piece in my mouth, I chewed and chewed, two minutes later I was still chewing the first piece of venison. In the end I gave up and left most of it. So I paid £19 for a venison that was inedible. My daughters steak was similar. Really, don’t bother going. The joiners inn and horseshoe inn are much better.

We are local to Alnwick and have been to the Market Tavern many times for drinks and to eat in the restaurant. It’s always been very nice....so we decided to go today for lunch. As we had our dog with us we couldn’t eat in the restaurant so knew we would eat in the bar. If you are eating a meal then the small round bistro type tables are a bit small for 2 plates so we asked if we could sit at the large table which was free. We were told no without any apology.....just in case a party of 4 came in. So Market Tavern, you lost our custom of 2 lunches and at least 2 drinks just because 4 people ‘might’ have come in. As I said, we are local and come to Alnwick for lunches regularly 12 months a year, not just on holiday.
If this is a policy, maybe you ought to re think it as it is very unlikely we will come back.

The food here is excellent - well produced English fare. My double lamb chop was perfectly cooked, full of taste and melted in the mouth. It was served with pan haggerty, a Northumberland dish I hadn't had in ages. It was the perfect match.

Desserts too are first rate. And the service was just the right balance, friendly but informative.

An excellent start to a holiday.

What a good meal we had today, excellent on all levels. Reiko went beyond the call of duty when we asked for something to be excluded from the dish that we chose. She checked with the kitchen and also made sure we were happy with our food. Then Owen was able to produce a sugar free desert for us, which was brilliant.

The hygiene measures were very good and because this was our first meal out in five months that was very important. All menus were sanatised after every use, the waitress brought cutlery wrapped in a napkin. Tables were well spaced out and we were not near anyone, yet the ambiance was better than we thought it might be.

We could not believe the review that was left yesterday about being robbed. The food was quality and the prices as one would expect. There was a notice on the outside to say that the Eat to Help Out Scheme was unfortunately not available. We still went in and were not disappointed one bit.

We have been before to this restaurant and were so pleased today we would definitely go again. Try it for yourselves!
