- steven12 contributionsGreat quirky museum, well worth £5 entrance feeGreat museum - lots to see. Pleasant, informative staff. Alnwick + Northumberland history. Loads of objects - well displayed. Good information on objects. Good option for a couple of hours, especially if rainingVisited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2023
- LadyGail62Worthing, United Kingdom119 contributionsSmall but Perfectly FormedWhat a wonderful museum. A bit of everything. Lots to take in. And we were fortunate enough to see the Ladybird book exhibition. A real treat and took me right back to my childhood. The volunteers were very knowledgeable. I promised one of the volunteers, Frances, that I would mention quadratic equations so she knew who wrote the review. The museum has activities for children so they don't get bored. The museum is nicely signposted. We found free parking round in Greenwell Road. Do visit, it is a wonderful antidote to the grandeur of the castle.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023
- Olivia CAlloa, United Kingdom12 contributionsA *sort of* hidden gem (it is well signposted!)I had this museum on my list of places to visit but I didn’t think I’d have the time- I’m so glad I did! For £5 it was well worth having a wander round this lovely local museum focusing on the working lives of people living in and around Alnwick over the centuries. I loved the current exhibition on the illustrations of the ladybird books- so nostalgic and very well put together. The lady in the museum was so lovely and welcoming and I was pleased to hear they are planning a new exhibition and so I will have to return for that.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 15, 2023

The rest of the museum is also well done and captures the history of Alnwick very well.Good exhibits and well written information. The lower ground floor is on the history of coal mining in the area.Unfortunately I am to big to try the pit tunnel. - Anthony S1 contributionA fascinating Museum in AlnwickBailiffgate Museum in Alnwick is a fascinating place. Two floors are dedicated to permanent displays and exhibits providing an informed insight to 10000 years of local and regional Northumberland history and way of life. Visitors of all ages will find something to interest them and a wealth of books are available to buy should you wish to delve further into a specific aspect. Having only 1 1/2 hours to visit we were fortunate to have volunteer Matthew to show us round and benefit from his enthusiasm and knowledge. We will definitely visit again when in the area and wish the staff and volunteers every success in their aspiration to eventually relocate to the larger and more central Northumberland Hall in Alnwick. - Steph M2 contributionsGreat family museum!A great little museum full of interesting exhibitions. Plenty of interactive opportunities for little ones too, from objects they can handle to colouring-in tables and toys. We visited during the ‘World’s Worst Album Covers’ exhibition and really enjoyed it - such an innovative idea for an exhibition, and really engaging!Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 21, 2024
- DavetheFisherAlnwick, United Kingdom263 contributionsA gem. This is a lovely little museum, crammed full of local history. Very friendly and helpful staff, and thoughtful, often interactive exhibits. We went specifically for the display of terrible album covers, which was a joy. - HW31Dudley, United Kingdom184 contributionsNice little museumNice little museum about the history of Alnwick. Includes permanent exhibitions and a temporary exhibition area on the first floor. The building is beautiful and includes the church organ and stained glass. The staff on reception were friendly and helpful, £6 for entry which is fine, about a 45 minute visit.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 14, 2024
- Frizbeth22Yorkshire, United Kingdom149 contributionsExcellent for families! We visited with my one year old, 5 year old and a set of grandparents - there was something for everyone! The permanent exhibits downstairs are largely interactive which my 5 yo loved, and there were well placed jigsaws and bits my 1 year old could access too. I learnt a lot, my parents enjoyed reminiscing and we enjoyed searching for the knitted mice that they have as a challenge at the moment too! Upstairs is current an exhibition about childhood and it was wonderful! Beautiful story telling chair, books to read, wooden train track to play with and lots of dressing up. There were little role plays to play in (A camp fire, measuring babies etc) and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the accounts of children who were evacuated to Alnwick during the second world war. We spent over an hour here, it was great value for money and accessible for my mum who has a walking stick.Thank you very much for your comments, For the summer time we always aim to have plenty for families to enjoy. I will pass on your feedback to my fellow volunteers that do the hard work of creating all the displays and interactive activities.Written August 14, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 2, 2024

Visited today and we were very impressed. The ladies on reception were extremely friendly and helpful and explained the COVID arrangements. If you like good local informal historical information this museum is just the place, it was very enjoyable and we had the place to ourselves so could read all the information and examine the exhibits. Well worth a visit.

We found this place after a visit to Alnick castle and found it very charming.
It is fairly small but will still take up round 1-2 hours of your time and is packed full of local history. When we went they had an interactive viking display which my 6 year old loved.
The downstairs had a more local theme, showing history from the coal miners which had a little miners tunnel which again my son loved crawling through.
Obviously Alnick with the Harry Potter connection will gain most of the tourist attraction but for those interested in local and general history this place is definitely worth a visit.

The Viking exhibition is superb. The design and layout of the artefacts and the mock ups of Viking life are excellent. There is interesting information in digestable segments which enhances this informative and visually exciting exhibition. At all levels, 7 years to 70, there is something interesting in this exhibition which is so relevant to Northumberland. The museum is brimming with local history which is presented in an interesting and thoughtful way. A superb place to visit.

The museum is housed in an old Catholic church, complete with stained glass windows! It is very close to one of the entrances to Alnwick Castle. It is just a small museum but spread over 3 floors. Most of it is about the history of Northumberland and Alnwick but there is an exhibition floor dedicated to the Vikings at present. The exhibition is in conjunction with the York Jorvic Museum which we have also been to as it is fairly local to us. There is a one-way system in operation at present and the whole museum is laid out in a very user-friendly manor. It is quite bright and modern with video presentations and lots to interest children and families. I believe it has had a major refurbishment in the last few years. The museum is run by volunteers and also has a gift shop.

Nick kindly advised my kids how to find the Viking mice around the museum & we all had a wonderful experience. We also enjoyed very much the "Vikings, fact & fiction" exhibition. The Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery is a must if you are in or near Alnwick!

The museum had a good mix of displays, information about the area and its history, plus an exhibition of paintings by a local artist. Being a former church, the stained glass windows were lovely.
There was a two minute or so video upon entering the building which played on a loop and the volume was way too high. All the time I was in there, even in the gallery I could hear the thing play over and over again. It was distracting while trying to read the information boards about local history. I assume that it would be easy enough to change it to press a button to start the video rather than it playing constantly. In the current energy crisis, it might save money, too. In the upstairs gallery there was a row of buttons to choose different videos, so maybe they could use the same system downstairs? Otherwise, an enjoyable visit.

Superb museum given it is independent and run by enthusiastic volunteers. Great permanent exhibition on the history of Alnwick complete with a fun trail for children to find things. Also a changing exhibition on the top floor. It's a hidden gem and ideal for a rainy day. We spent an hour there happily.
