Visited this site as we are historic houses members really glad we visited . The castle is totally different from others in the area . The guides are very helpful in providing information regarding how the castle was purchased by the present owner in a derelict state and how it has been transformed over the last 30years .

Took the grandchildren to visit this castle, 14 Aug 2016. It's been reconstructed (in part) from a ruin, and now it's filled with the most eclectic collection of artefacts I've ever seen in one place. It's still the home of the Wakefield family (Sir Humphry, the baronet, married to a daughter of Lady Grey). He worked for Christie's Auctioneers, and... More

A short woodland walk takes you to the stunning castle and gardens. Inside, the castle is atmospheric and crammed full of totally random "stuff", adding to the unique and bizarre experience! Lots of the exhibits are labelled with homemade laminates, which presents a refreshing personal touch to the visit. The guides were very enthusiastic and knowledgable. We ended our visit... More

I came across this crumbling pile entirely by chance some years ago when work was just getting underway to renovate certain areas of this truly magnificent building. The cost of restoring this edifice is substantial and to fully restore it would involve mind boggling expenditure affordable only by people like Donald Trump. There is a patina of age present which... More

We have talked about visiting this place for some time but never actually got around to it until last week when we decided to go and see what it was all about. Having read about the place and seeing bits on TV about it we weren't disappointed at all. There really is so much to see and if you want... More

I`d seen the episode of Salvage Hunters that featured Chillingham , and could n`t wait to visit for myself . I was not disappointed. I`m not knocking the NT, as they do fine work, but there`s always a place for the quirky and the eccentric. Sir Humphrey is a proper old school aristo, with a background as a buyer for... More

Lovely old castle with tremendous history but cluttered with not very interesting rubbish and with curios and specimens of different eras in the same case (WW11 commando knife with a Bronze age item!). Looked like they had gathered all the unsaleable lots from the local auction to fill the place up!. Signage and parking is a lottery. Really needs someone... More

Where to begin.... very chaotic layout. The castle is crying out for a curator to organise the displays and impose some sort of structure and flow to the place. Quirky is one word to describe it, but at £23 for a family of 3, I would expect better.

What a bizarre house this is. Our group was divided - some loved the chaotic rooms with amateur labelling, that encouraged you to actually poke your fingers into history. Others were disturbed by too much of everything cluttered together all sealed under a layer of grot. There's a feeling that health and safety's gone AWOL here leaving a trip hazard... More
