A very interesting bone crypt beneath the Holy Trinity Rothwell church dating back to an unknown period and for unknown reasons, hundreds of skulls lay unearthed after centuries of intrigue....

bones of the unknown dead - what stories they could tell
Aug 2019
By appointment we went to this bone crypt. So many skulls and bones piled up and sadly no tales from the dead to tell. The guide was informative but wasn't able to shed any light on who the people were - only conjecture.
Still well worth a visit

Bone man was very knowledgable and informative, you won’t be there long but worth seeing glad we went.

A Really Neat Bit of History
May 2017 • Couples
Holy Trinity Church itself is a miracle of survival, having once been derelict, but the bone crypt under it is one of only three in England and you are up close with the bones. Hours are a bit tricky- one web site says every second Sunday, white the sign says every Sunday, and it's only open 2:30-4:30 PM. Admission is a small 2 pounds and well worth it. Rothwell itself is a neat town to kill tine in as well, a pity it doesn't get more tourism in recognition of it's uniqueness, such as the Elizabethan Jesus Hospital next to the church, and the odd Market House closer to the parking area. If I was entertaining guests with a lean towards the bizarre this would be my first stop.

Interesting place to visit

It's a bit smelly down in the crypt. You will never see another place like this so well worth a visit. The church that houses this crypt is absolutely beautiful.

Cubs trip.

I have lived in Northamptonshire all my life and didn't know this was here. I thought it would be creepy but after the initial shudder of the amount of skulls and thigh bones set out before you, I found it very interesting. The guide was excellent. We went on an organised trip one evening, which made it atmospheric stepping out into the dark, cold graveyard afterwards. A different evening and glad I joined in with my boy Cubs.
