Behind the unobtrusive facade of Millgate House at the bottom of Richmond's Georgian Market Square lies one of the most suprising gardens in the North of England. The garden won first prize out of 3200 entries in the R H S National Garden Competition and is now a Royal Horticultural Society's "Recommended Garden". It is described in the Good Gardens Guide as "a gem""a delightful garden...skilful underplanting...never feels contrived...just natural and generous...it is a wonderful education in the handling of a small space." The garden has been featured in magazines all over the world.A recent article in the Sunday Times said..."the most densely planted garden I have ever seen." The praise is fulsome...don't miss this garden whilst in Richmond. Many return again and again at different seasons. Open Daily 10 00 am til 5 00pm April til Oct Entrance £2 00

Fascinating every month, with the fragrant roses, camellia trees, classic English herbacious border plants, fernery & hostas. An essential for those visiting Richmond to absorb the various beauties of the town.

Plantsman's delight. Large collection of hostas. Most plants labelled and there is a very helpful booklet. Do not miss it. The garden is an inspiration.

A super garden in the middle of the town. Great to able to walk through it and ask the gardener questions about the plants.

Mum and I enjoyed walking around the abundant roses and other plants in this beautifully set out terraced garden. It really is a gem of a place and the view from the gardens is lovely!

Visited on Sunday afternoon (gloomy weather) but was enchanted by the glorious gardens here - lovely array of roses including Helena - a large climbing rose in the centre of the garden - spreading over a purpose built iron pergola - huge range of Hostas (which are a favourite of mine) with very very little slug damage they've obviously got... This is my third visit and second with my Mum, a "retired due to health reasons" keen home gardener. The garden is just one of the most beautiful and we will never tire of visiting and taking time to sit a while and enjoy. Worth every penny of the entry fee in my opinion. Thank you for creating something so... More

Entering these gardens you have no idea what is in store. It is breathtaking, full of the most beautiful plants. How on earth are the hostas grown like that with not a single slug or snail nibble! There are little seating areas and the roses at this time of year are just coming into bloom. Truly beautiful.

So glad you loved the garden. It is a great time to see it right now...mid June. We are getting a lot of people waxing lyrical about it. A visitor yesterday said it was so beautiful it brought her to tears. The word "inspirational" has been used several times over the last few days. We have even had someone come... More

After a very good lunch at Millgate House, we all went out into the garden. We have been here before but the different time of year of course means that different plants are flowering. On both occasions, the garden looked lovely and it cascades as terraced levels down the hill slope behind the house. A very pleasant afternoon. A good... More

A nondescript door in a pebble dashed wall leads onto passageway which drops gently away. The floor is part York stone and gravel and on either side there are various types of hostas all enjoying the shade, on your right you notice an arch way which you walk through and suddenly WOW !!! you are on the balcony of a... If you love plants then you will love Millgate House. Every nook and cranny has something interesting to see. Little paths meander through the plethera of plants. Shape and texture are everywhere, looking up or on the ground. We went at a quiet time in the gardening year, but as we were staying in the B&B, and lucky enough to... More
