Locked Up
Oct 2021 • Solo
I recently drove from Leeds to visit this church as I’d heard so much about it. I checked the website before setting off and it said the church was open. Unfortunately it wasn’t, with the main door locked and bolted. I noticed signs of activity in the nearby parish centre and went across to enquire, to be confronted by a roomful of people having refreshments. A helpful lady said it was the parish coffee morning and asked me to join them. I explained about the church and said she would ask the vicar, who was seated nearby. She came back with the message “It’s shut - Covid”( the vicar himself didn’t bother to speak to me). I wonder why a handful of probably masked people wandering about a large church is more of a Covid threat than a roomful of unmasked people sitting indoors in close proximity and chatting loudly? Various churches have now reopened, in spite of the pandemic. Others, like this one, seem to use it as an excuse to pull up the drawbridge and treat the place as a private members’ club. Very disappointing. If you are not going to reopen, perhaps you should have the courtesy to let visitors know via your website.

Place locked so don’t bother
Oct 2021 • Solo
Arrived around 2:30pm Thursday afternoon. Place in darkness and all doors locked. This is a large old parish church, why is it locked ? No sign of any work being done and no information notices anywhere.

Beautiful church
Oct 2021
One of the more beautiful churches I have seen in England. We were greeted by a volunteer, telling us about the church.

Interesting fact with an aura inside the cave, with the history and religious content of the area. Very peaceful and tranquil spot by the river.

Impressive Building, Easily Reached from the Town or the River
Mar 2019 • Couples
We came across this impressive building whilst walking up from the river and were taken by the recycling of tombstones which looks rather odd but makes sense, A small garden of remembrance is located at the east end. Large open grass areas created by the removal of the stones.

Christmas Tree Festival
Dec 2018 • Family
We visited to see the annual Christmas Tree Festival which runs in the first week or so of December. The church is filled with over 100 trees decorated by local groups and businesses. We visited on a Sunday and it was interesting to look round and our daughter enjoyed the sparkly things and lights. I would recommend going on a weekday though and not a weekend as it was incredibly crowded and looking back don’t feel I got to look at the signs next to the trees etc as felt had to keep moving round. It’s a very good cause though so worth a visit.

Beautiful historic church
Sep 2018 • Family
Dating back to the 12th century this church is well worth a good look round. The Slingsby chapel and monuments are very interesting. The church is beautifully kept and there are many tombstones to read inside.

Lovely Church
Aug 2018 • Family
Beautiful Stain glass windows and a haven of peace in a very busy town. Spent 30 minutes looking round and sitting quietly for a while. A welcoming church in a lovely setting.

Interesting tombs
Jul 2018 • Couples
Came to see the tombs including 2 early standing effigies. There are also windows by Morris & co. Had nice chat with homeless man who sees himself as the church's minder.
Well worth a visit.
