- TR4prezGreater London, United Kingdom336 contributionsBeautiful seafront townWe were in Whitstable for a weekend to celebrate a good friend’s 50th birthday. Whitstable really is a beautiful gem of a seaside town. Beautiful castle and gardens, lovely shops and restaurants. Clean, classy and unspoilt.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 16, 2024
- sabatinitennisAshford, United Kingdom3,732 contributionsA better than average High StreetThis High Street is basically the vast majority of the shopping area in this seaside town. It is one long road that splits into two at one end and runs parallel to the coastline. There are lots of cafés and eateries in the street and a wide range of shops, many of which are individual outlets and not brand names. The street is also home to a museum, a block of toilets, an art gallery, a good Wetherspoon's and a theatre. All considered, more than most High Streets in Kent have to offer.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 16, 2024
- JaneMJ186414Salisbury, United Kingdom19 contributionsWonderful weekend in Whitstable.Well worth a visit. We rented an Air BnB in the centre and had a wonderful weekend. Great walks, super restaurants and easy to visit Canterbury for a day out. Thoroughly enjoyed the seafood and their world famous oysters. We were lucky with the weather so could enjoy the stunning sunsets. Had recently read the 'Whitstable Pearl' series of books by Julie Wassmer so it was fun identifying various landmarks mentioned in the books, particularly the 'Neppy' (the Old Neptune pub).Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 16, 2024
- Geoff HSissinghurst, United Kingdom18,055 contributionsLots of good shopsLots of good shops (a lot of them independent) and eateries, along with a museum and a theatre. It's very easy to spend a couple of hours wandering around. There is only one drawback and that is the cost of the car parks. However, if you drive around you can find free street parking.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2024
- Mavis MatherUnited Kingdom13 contributionsLovely townUnlike Deal this place has arrived. I really like Whitstable. It has an ambience about it. Has a number of chains and well to do clothing stores like Crew Clothing, Weird Fish, White Stuff the latter two Canterbury no longer has along with Fat Face and out of town offers good facilities too with an array of supermarkets namely Tesco, Sainsbury, McD's, KFC, Costa Drive thru and an M and S food hall and Home Bargains all places a town should have. There are quirky shops. The place is generally nice to visit with a nice beach and places to eat at. Despite the DFL and ANB's it has arrived unlike nearby Deal Kent.Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 8, 2024

There are no standout attractions here, but you can spend several very pleasant hours walking along the beach, around the harbour and through the town browsing the non-chain stores. The main feature is the very large number of traditional houses and also fisherman’s huts with mercifully very few examples of 1970s civic architecture. There are good pubs and some trendy coffee shops. In the harbour area there are some nice places to get seafood, although most seemed quite pricey. Parking is plentiful.

Interesting that some of the recent reviews show disappointment with beach, expensive parking, other visitors and covid. Myself and family had a lovely time at October half term. I appreciate, at other times, the atmosphere might be different but as we visited on bikes and spent the week. Out of season seaside towns can feel bleak but Whitstable was alive. Yes there's a whopping great asphalt factory on the harbour but people were happily troughing oysters, strolling with dogs and enjoying the Autumn sun. Whitstable has a nice high street, restaurants, beach and great history.

What a magical coastal town. Whether you are walking through the main street, a hive of activity and quaint variety of shops, or walking along the water, which is picturesque, and inviting, with a wide selection of restaurants and cafes this town is amazing. Easy access to swim, a lovely walking path good for exercising or site seeing, and overall just a great place to get away, or move to, as I believe a lot of people came for a visit and eventually just moved here. I can understand why, it has a relaxed vibe, then again I did visit during the week and if the locals are anything to go by, it can get quite crazy busy on weekends...and I can understand why.

A victim of its own success. Unfortunately what used to be a lovely town is now completely overpriced. £8 for 3 oysters, in a harbour front cafe, charity shop clothing at near high street shop prices, car parking more than £7 for three hours. Sorry, I will prefer to go to Hythe, or Herne Bay, or Folkestone, as 3 examples of equally nice places without being ripped off.

This review is based on the extortionate parking fees which in my mind are extremely prohibitive. My partner and I had hoped to spend some time looking around the beach and shops as the drive in looked promising. However at £2.50 an hour to park meant a quick cup of coffee and then on to somewhere with more reasonable parking charges! How many others has this deterred I wonder?

it's about 20 years since our last visit and what we saw it will probably be 20 years to our next visit. we stayed about 4 hrs and had to pay £9.60 for the pleasure of parking. the beach area was very quaint , old fishing huts etc worth a look.

A nice seaside town with lots of interesting independent shops. The harbour is worth a visit and you can walk along to The Old Neptune - a very nice pub on the beach. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and if you are keen on photography the light and the sunsets are wonderful.
HOWEVER - if you are visiting Whitstable in your campervan or motorhome then don’t bother - you are not welcome! The local council do not want you there spending your money!

Wow how a Town can fall! This quaint little Town used to be a real favourite of mine, however the latest trip this May was a total let down, parking is horrendous expensive and if you want to pay online you have to create an account! All the lovely little shops have disappeared to be replaced by chain shops and charity shops, or shops selling very expensive tat! This town was famous for its seafood now it’s full of rubbish - clearly Canterbury Council are letting the side down here

My wife and I have stayed in and around Whitstable many times over the years, and sad to say have witnessed the miserable decline of this once beautiful coastal town, renowned for its fresh fish shops and seafood restaurants. The unique hustle and bustle , of the quayside fisheries and fishermen have almost disappeared, the high street but a shadow of only a few years ago.
The absence of locals is noticeable ,a result of the houses being bought up by outsiders who rent on Airbnb.at jacked up prices.
The council owned car park charges are exorbitant,so be aware
Whitstable I’m sorry to say has lost its soul and the atmosphere that made it such a lovely place to visit, we won’t be going back anytime soon.

We went to Whitstable to be near the sea, not to shop. The Triangle bus left us more or less in the centre of town, and we were immediately disappointed. The shop signs around us were exactly the same as the ones we had left behind in Canterbury. It looked like Canterbury-on-Sea!
We wandered for a very short time before we discoered the true charm of Whitstable Town Centre: turn down any street to your left and you are by the seaside. It is magical. The atmosphere changed as soon as we saw the sea. We were not shopping - we were at the seaside.
Streets are narrow and we had to be really careful not too step in the path of a car or bus. People in te shops are very friendly and helpful. Much more so than in Canterbury. Must be the sea air.
All the chain shops seem to be there. Quite an achievement in these days of Amazon massacre. Quite a lot of small, local businesses, too. If we had been there to shop, I think we would have enjoyed it.
Oh and pretty, very pretty.

I am looking to take my Great Aunt to Whitstable for a break. She is 91 and not able to walk without a stroller and not very far. My question is how can I use or qualify for disabled car parks in your area. My Aunt lives in Greenwich and i will be picking her up from there.

We have booked a holiday staying in a cottage in Clifton Road for 7 days starting Friday 30 July 2021 which does not have its own parking area. I have read that parking can be a nightmare in July. Is anyone in Clifton Road or nearby able to offer a parking space on their driveway and would be happy to pay.

They told me that the town in small but lovely. Would it be enough half-day to visit it? Let's say arriving in the morning and leaving after lunch. Thank you very much
Written April 20, 2018
Yes, you could do this but given the limited time I would prioritise the immediate harbour area and if possible walk towards the Tankerton slopes to see the beach huts. There are some places to buy coffees and snacks in this area or fish restaurants around the harbour if you would like a meal. The harbour area also has public toilets nearby.

Hi, I am planning to visit the town shops on Bank Holiday Easter Monday. Can anyone tell me if majority of the shops will be open as it is a bank holiday?
Any help appreciated
Written March 25, 2018
yes most shops are open but parking is a problem we often park near the castle and walk down to Whitstable Town. With it being bank holiday better to book a restaurant we go to Crab and Winkle on the harbour good fish.Have a lovely time
