Excellent food at very reasonable price
Jul 2021
Really enjoyable lunch after walk round beautiful surrounding countryside. Excellent food at a very reasonable price, friendly efficient service, and the Harveys was spot on! Would highly recommend a visit. We'll certainly be back.

Kent Basset waddle
May 2021 • Friends
Today my humans took me on a waddle to meet other doggy’s like me. We stopped off at the most dog friendliest pub I’ve ever been to. Me and the human shared the seafood platter. It was amazing. The other human had the pie which was eaten so quickly I didn’t get a look in. The deserts looked and tasted yummy but they didn’t share them with me. Listen humans and hounds get yourself down to this lovely country pub because your be barking mad not to

Splendid Kent Country Pub with friendly service
May 2021
Splendid country pub not far from Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and near to Shipbourne. Friendly welcome and service, and lovely seating out back. We were just too late to order food (food stops at 3pm and starts again at 6 at weekends) but enjoyed drinks. We had to wait a while for the order to be taken, but generally service friendly, good and efficient. Will definitely visit again for food!

Takeaway dinner
Dec 2020 • Couples
We've had quite a few takeaway meals during various lockdown and restrictions due to Covid. The one from The Rifleman was by far the best. It was hot, tasty, filling and perfectly cooked, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Rude staff
Aug 2020 • Couples
Awful and rude service. Arrived at 12.45 and asked could we have lunch. The male barman immediately said no without making eye contact, the woman said she would check with the chef who apparently said no because they’re fully booked and “wouldn’t be able to squeeze us in”. All we wanted was a sandwich and we saw at least 15 tables that were free including unreserved ones outside. Had a coffee each and after seeing the coffee machine, asked for lattes to which the response was another rude, “no”. Seem to be very chatty and friendly with locals though, an almost toxic atmosphere. Would never recommend.

Great meal as usual
Jul 2020 • Couples
Lunchtime was spent mid walk and it was glorious. The landlord is aware of social distancing and hygiene which is totally justified. The food was great as usual and the beer fab. One of the best pubs in Kent. Don't miss it. Currently you need to be tolerant of attitude of staff as working in this environment is difficult for them. Place yourself in their place. I speak from working in the hospitality industry. Otherwise the alternative is no great pub!!

Ruined Birthday Lunch
Jul 2020 • Friends
Sadly this is a bad review, not based on the food or drink as we didn’t get to try any! We were a group of 3 ladies, who all live locally and had walked to the pub to celebrate a birthday. After a long walk we arrived at the Rifleman quite thirsty and hungry. We walked through the garden, as that was where we had booked a table. We were hoping, given the pandemic that the tables would have been labelled with the booking name - to avoid having to go into the pub to find out where we were to be seated. Anyway, we approached the bar and were politely told to sit in the corner and somebody would deal with us. We patiently waited, watching the bar lady serve the current customer. Once finished we thought we would be spoken to, but no an apparent local walked in and was served before us, with no social distancing observed. At this point we were all pretty fed up, so I approached the bar and the bar lady looked up raised her voice a little and said to me “I told you we would deal with you”, with that we all got up and walked out. We rang the pub to speak to a Manager, the same lady answered the phone and was quite rude again. The Landlord eventually called but nothing was sorted. Will not be returning to receive more bad attitude from this disgracefully rude woman. Such a shame as it’s such a lovely country pub. It would appear staff training in both social distancing and customer service is well overdue.

Such a shame
Mar 2019 • Family
We arrived at this lovely pub greeted by 2 elderly gentleman who I suspect were the owners. Gentlemen is the right term they were absolutely charming as were the waiting staff. However... the chef - Nigel I believe his name is has a real chip on his shoulder. He came out moaning because more people had booked in than he was expecting. Then he moaned about something else. Our food took an hour or so to arrive and it really wasn’t worth the wait. We both fancied a roast an unusual choice for us. However it was tasteless. The roast potatoes were tough rather than crispy, the meat and gravy totally tasteless, the only saving grace was he can make a good Yorkshire pudding. Oh and the veg were ok if a little uninspiring. This should be a lovely quirky pub with charming staff which it is - albeit a bit chaotic (change from using letters to numbers for your tables and you won’t get confused between m and n!!) just get a new chef who doesn’t the attitude and can present something with some flavour.
Maybe he was having a bad day but I suspect not.

Enjoyable lunch
Oct 2018 • Friends
We visited this venue for the first time with two friends.
The welcome was good and the service faultless.
The lunchtime choices on the menu were very good and the food was most enjoyable.
Certainly worthy of a future visit.

We're pleased we gave it a shot
Aug 2018 • Couples

Friends recommended this quaint pub tucked away in the Kent countryside in Dunks Green near Tonbridge, and we share their taste, so expectations were high.

We booked the Tuesday night pie and a pint for £10 a person, found our quiet corner table in the already busy pub, and hoped this suggested we had made a good choice. I chose the steak and ale pie with potatoes while the other three opted for the chicken pie with chips; all came with vegetables. We most definitely had made a good choice, as the well-presented meals were ample and very tasty.

Despite going along for the £10 offer, our acceptance of the dessert menu proved our combined weakness, and yes, we all ordered dessert at £5 each! Can you resist sticky toffee pudding and ice cream? Nor could we.

My friend had another pint while the girls had a large glass of Merlot each. The £10 deal allows a standard glass of wine so we had only to pay the difference; a very nice touch.

Behind our table was a lovely fireplace and we plan a return in the winter to try their regular menu, we’ll be well pleased if it matches the quality and value of our pie and a pint.

The bill was £79 including 10% tip, roughly £20 a head, but then we did have the dessert and extra drinks. As you do.
