If you call in at the tourist information centre in Tonbridge "Castle," it is possible to take a tour of the remains of the timber built citadel's solidly built gatehouse.

The entrance fee includes a set of head phones that provide guests with a running commentary highlighting points of interest. The narration apparently allows visitors to see and hear what it may have been like to be a lord or lady between the fifth and fifteenth centuries. Fortunately the recorded voice is far more affable than the visitor centre vendors selling the tickets.

The tour takes the visitant (not the rumoured apparitions) through the remains of the gatehouse, with little extras to enhance a medieval experience - although it's one I could do without.

As we did not go into the gatehouse (I do not know how much it is to go in) this review is purely based on what you can see from the outside. The gatehouse is interesting to look at and there is also a very good walk round the curtain walls. There are information boards placed at various points which give descriptions of what you are looking at. Where the curtain walls front onto the river, there are benches where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine (even on a winter's day).

Very lovely place, nice to go for a walk about. Entry into the castle gate is extremely overpriced for what you get. It should be much cheaper for families. The castle gate is very small and you can finish the tour in a few mins. Note entry into the grounds beyond the gates is free and I see this what most people based their positive reviews on, which I concur. Overall grounds are grate, castle entry is too expensive.

Hello, we work to ensure we are competitively priced to other like for like attractions. Our excellent audio tour, which is offered as part of the entry price takes around 45 minutes giving a comprehensive history of the castle. We are very sorry you didn’t enjoy your visit with us and I wonder if you did not take up the option of the audio tour and this is why you did not get the most from your visit. There is also an audio-visual display inside which is a part of the tour to gain more information about the history of the castle in an immersive way and it sounds like you may have missed this when on the tour

Wow what a fine! We were on holiday in Kent and decided to visit this castle as we were staying in Tonbridge.
The castle is breathtakingly beautiful as are the gardens that surround it. It is easy to book via telephone. Card only payments are taken on arrival. The ladies who work in the tourist information office are really friendy and helpful.
The audio tour takes about an hour and is really interesting. Lot of things to look at and the audio guide is very informative.
Easy to find ( just off the High Street in Tonbridge) and easy and cheap to park right by the castle.
After the tour, you can enjoy the gardens or take a walk along the river right next to the castle. All very enjoyable in the wonderful hot weather we experienced when we were on holiday.

A fab place to visit and learn about history . The Castle
Takes you back in history and you and your family can learn about how people lived and eat I. The past. The people made of wax and the taking machine help you learn about the past

Went for tonbridge illuminated and really should have just stayed home and looked at my Christmas tree!
So so expensive and managed to walk all round within half an hour. £8 for a baileys hot chocolate and a poor excuse for a Christmas market.
For the extortionate price of tickets, you’d be better going elsewhere.
Embarrassingly I’d brought friends and couldn’t apologise enough for the extremely poor display

Had a little wander around the grounds of Tonbridge Castle - it’s most impressive feature being its compact Norman gatehouse. I think it’d be worth doing the self guided audio tour but I went out of hours. I did, however, enjoy learning about the original structure of the Motte and Baillie (a man made hill & sunken area in the grounds). A pleasant 10 minute stroll & the gatehouse is an excellent place to shelter from an unexpected rainshower.

Really well presented and restored gatehouse with great exhibitions and a short film. Good parking, and small entry fee well worth paying. Lovely outside area.

We had a lovely time here. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and we were lucky enough to have the castle to ourselves - we visited early in the day, midweek. It has been really well set up for all ages, and the audio guide is very good.

I came here last month whilst I was in Tonbridge. The staff greeted us with a smile and were helpful and friendly. The price is not too bad and worth a visit. It has beautiful, well kept grounds. You do get to go inside and to the top for a nice view. Take a picnic and spend the day visiting the castle and on the grounds
