About Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway Limited
Heritage industrial, narrow gauge railway (2ft 6in between rails) linking the former paper mill site in Sittingbourne to the active paper mill at Kemsley Down. Almost all locomotives and coaches are original to the Railway, which has been operating since 1905. Your journey starts at Sittingbourne Viaduct station where the railway used to enter the long-demolished paper mill. Trains travel over the century-old reinforced concrete viaduct to Milton Creek Country Park, where it passes through the freshwater and saltwater marshes to arrive at Kemsley Down station within the paper mill. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Kemsley Down is our main base where the Footplate Cafe, shop, museum, picnic areas and gardens can be found.

The volunteers are very helpful and nice - spending their time to preserve a precious piece of history. Will definitely go back to support them. Our kid loved it!

Just being on the train, it was such a beautiful steam journey. Hearing the sound of the whistle. The smell of the smoke. The staff were amazing and so helpful. If you can walk a short distance, or weight bear. They will lift your wheelchair on the train for you. Ramp was good and most of the paths were ok. The little bit of hard work was well worth it.

Visited for the first time ever and found it pleasant little experience, the staff was very friendly and the line had a quirky charm, potty it wasn't longer. The standard gauge locos need alot of TLC, but would be somewhere I'd be interested in helping out.

We're delighted you had a great first visit. We're always looking for volunteers, particularly to look after the stand gauge locos because everyone else is trying to keep the narrow gauge ones running! Check out the membership section of the website for more information or email info@sklr.net

Great family trip. We had booked a compartment and were shown to our seats by the very friendly staff. Ticket cost was exceptional value. Trip is about 20 minute but over some interesting infrastructure of an old concrete viaduct and through grassland so plenty of birds to spot. Trip takes you to Kemsley where you have a chance to grab refreshments and view the rolling stock and nature garden in the museum before the return journey. Staff happy to share information. It's less than 10 minutes walk from the mainline station to the Steam railway station. Once in the compartment you can take masks off as it is restricted to your group.

A fantastic afternoon with some of the family. The two grandchildren were so excited and absorbed by the train journey and museum. We even had tears when it was time to leave! Lovely cafe for a mid journey cuppa. The staff were so friendly making it a great day.
