I have visited Sandwich Bay on a few occasions and at low tide it is a magical place as one can walk happily on the sand flats.

People have told me that there is a toll for cars (about seven quid) but as I walk from Deal this does not bother me.

This year we have the Open which will mean for a week it will be hell with all the golf groupies hanging out and this might spoil the peace and quiet of the area.

In 2015 I walked along the footpath on a very hot day and witnessed a Fata Morgana (Superior Mirage) as I looked towards France. These are reasonably rare but given the correct conditions they can be seen especially when looking out to sea.

Also Turner said that the light in the area is the equal of Venice- how true that is as the light here (I live in Deal) is absolutely stunning no matter what month it is.

Although Sandwich Bay is great - you are not far from the lovely town of Deal which has some very interesting indie shops - Walmer and Kingsdown are nearby and I almost forgot that the town of Sandwich is really beautiful and so very quiet (apart from when the golf comes to town).

Also you are not far from Margate which has a great art gallery and Whitstable which is just rather nice.

There are other places such as Broadstairs, Birchington (where Dante Gabriel Rossetti sleeps) and Ramsgate which has the best Wetherspoons in the whole wide world.

Think of it a remote day at Wild Sandwich Bay and a meal at Spoons in the evening (bliss)

Do come to this part of Kent once Uncle Boris gives the go ahead SMO

Sandwich is a wonderful beach, perfect for quiet relaxation. The sea is always warm and the beach is empty even on the hottest days. Being a private estate with a toll charge the roads are always empty which makes it perfect for cyclists of all ages. The golf club is magnificent and is hosting the Open in 2021. People say that there are no facilites but there is a bird obseravtory with a shop, Royal St Georges has a snack bar and a proper dining room (although no jeans and a collared shirt for the snack bar and jacket for the dining room) and Princes lodge has a delightful restaurant ad cosy places to stay. If you don't like shingle, then just come at low tide where there is a wide expanse of sand. For a day at the beach, the toll charge might seem a little steep but it is purely to help the residents pay for the upkeep of the roads. I would strongly suggest taking a bike and wanderng around the many nature reserves or hunting for cowrie shells down by Princes where the beach is sandy or just exploring the many cycle routes to Deal, Worth, Sandwich and Pegwell Bay. Deal is a whole other place which requires another article this long to describe all the hidden delights and the restaurants and the crowded beach and the pier which is wonderful for fishing. Pegwell Bay is just a nature reserve, although there are some very rare birds. Worth is a hidden village which takes longer to get to by car than it does to cycle from Sandwich Bay. Two main restaurants, a church, a primary school and a duck pond pretty much some it up, but it does have beautiful views and a track leading straight into Sandwich. Sandwich has the attraction of Pick Your Own, a farm where you can pick your own fruit. Sandwich also has a train station and is a medival town with many hidden routes and a Quay, well worth the visit. For people with a hankering for ice creams, there is a van in Sandwich and a parlour in Deal. There is a cycle and footpath which comes out by the golf club from Sandwich and takes only 15min to cycle. Sandwich Bay is the place to be.

For me, beautiful…. Misinformation galore

The beach will not be for everyone. But reviews give a plethora of misinformation and misinterpretation. There is a charge for motorists to use the road. But no, it is not to keep out the riffraff. Neither is it ‘typical of a pompous golf club”, with whom the charge is absolutely unrelated. Attributing it to “rich greedy buggers” is also the to miss the point. The residents are financially responsible for the road and the estate. The statement that “once a road is down it’s down” and therefore requires no cost is not correct. It also not true that residents “will not clean the beach”. Residents and non residents collaborate to sweep the rubbish and plastic
which washes in, as well as on conservation projects, all of which cost money,

It is not true that there is no sand.

It will cost you to drive the private road which goes to the beach. If you go when the tide is on, it will be shingle. If you go when the tide is out, there will be hundreds of metres of flat sands, giving access to shallow sea for paddling and swimming and rich wild and bird life. For me, it is stunning. For you, as a previous reviewer says, there may “much better beaches”

Check the tide times and photos, and decide if you want to pay to use people’s private road. Make an informed choice to either, as I do, enjoy it, or move on and enjoy another beach. But avoid misinformed assumptions made on ignorant stereotypes of class and golf clubs.

Staying nearby we decided to do a walk from Sandwich to the coast and back along part of the Saxon Shoreway. The beach is quite extensive and on the day we walked along the tide was well out, and so we were able to walk along a sandy beach with only the area close to the carpark being busy. There were lots of birds around and seals although we saw none during our walk.

Greedy piggies £7 for the day what? Try the alternative road via Deal it goes via princes gold course and is lovely. The beach is deserted and is rough and wild. Lots of interesting debris and the occasional bomb dug up by dogs Sunday past. It goes from pebble to sand and around the mouth of the river you can see seals wallowing. It is a haunting place and great for lonely walking. Go there but don't get caught for the ridiculous fee.

A disgrace to charge £7.00 toll to see a beach that is our heritage and natural right. Typical of pompous golf club.

All the whining people on this site need their bumps felt but, thankfully, at least they won’t come here and ruin what is a fantastic day out. There is a toll of £7 to access the beach by car, but motor homes and horse boxes are £10 I believe. The reason for the toll is to pay for the upkeep of the private road which passes through a private estate owned by the residents who, incidentally, own all of the land down to the high tide mark.

If you don’t like rich people or feel that you have some inalienable right to get free access into what is, essentially, somebody else’s back garden then go somewhere else. If you want a peaceful, quiet beach day without the clutter of ice cream vans and slot machines, chip shops and traffic jams then this is the place for you.

Get this: there are NO facilities apart from bins and some toilets. Nothing else. No chips. No slot machines. Nothing. You need to bring everything you need, including shelter from the sun. Have a proper day out on the miles of uncluttered sand (at low tide) or shingle (high tide). Get to the beach at 3 hours after high tide at Sandwich if you want to avoid the shingle.

Have fun!

To get a view of one of the beauty sites of Kent would have cost us £7.
Outrageous that private landowners have the right to deprive us of our coastline. Extortion in Winter

Beware of the man who works in the toll both. He is rude, sarcastic, obnoxious and presumptuous, with an inflated ego. Thankfully his attempts to be intimidating were unsuccessful.
He successfully ruined our weekend spent in Sandwich!
