About
**The gallery is now completely closed and will reopen 23 October 2021.** Turner Contemporary is a pioneering visual arts organisation using our namesake’s spirit of radical enquiry to activate art and people, in our galleries and beyond. Located in an elegant purpose-built gallery, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the gallery looks out on the very views that JMW Turner immortalised in many of his key works. Turner Contemporary presents a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions, events and learning opportunities which make intriguing links between historic and contemporary art. The gallery offers a space for everyone to discover different ways of seeing, thinking and learning.

Closed!
Oct 2021
Oh dear. Travelled to Margate and the gallery was closed. After Covid and a prolonged closure surely it would be possible not to close again quite so soon. The town relies on the gallery as its attraction. Closure for a month is not helpful.

Surprised there wasn't more to look at

Not a lot of exhibits but liked the ones we saw and loved the anthony gormley outside. Free entry so worth going. Good gift shop and loved the architecture of the building.

I visited the cafe at the Turner Contemporary with three friends. Three of us have mobility problems and the staff were welcoming kind and helpful, The food was excellent too.

Wonderful place - worth a visit
Sep 2021
What a wonderful contribution the Turner Contemporary makes to the Margate seafront. We really enjoyed the environment of the building and the exhibitions were creative and thought provoking. I’d recommend a visit to take in the calm, peaceful atmosphere of the place. One of the highlights for me was the wonderful cafe. You can sit inside or outside both with beautiful views. The selection of pastries/cakes is broad and my choice was scrumptious, accompanied by gorgeous coffee served by very pleasant staff in a relaxing, laid back atmosphere complemented by the sounds of the excellent Turner Indie Mix playing.

Brave MARGATE
Sep 2021
Lucky Margate to have such a building, situated brilliantly by the sea .I wonder if we would have visited the town had it not been for the gallery.
Like the last reviewer,we had not heard of Ellen Harvey and thought this a very impressive exhibition as in a totally different style was the Steve McQueen video.
Hopefully it will continue to get the support it deserves.

Well laid out exhibition
Sep 2021
An excellent exhibition by Ellen Harvey a New York artist. We did not know of her work before but were fascinated by the exhibition content.

The emperor’s new clothes

Pretentious, moi?Good see view, it’s free…no it isn’t, we subsidise it through our taxes. A wonderful space inside what could be an Amazon distribution hub that has very little in it. Very deeply felt personal artworks but tending to slogans as a shorthand for novelty.

A public toilet in a town that lacks public toilets
Aug 2021 • Family
A total waste of time and tax payer money, unless you need to use the toilet. You'll need to register, but anything beats the disgusting festival toilet facilities that the town's visitors are expected to use.

A space with no merit other than to vacuum up public money and waste it - albeit with a dose of elitist contempt.

Demolish it and build a hotel or apartments.

Certainly worth a visit
Aug 2021 • Friends
Firstly it’s free. The gallery has gorgeous views across the sea, and showcases (of at least currently) a great exhibition. The disappointed tourist which displays forgotten or destroyed relics, places and spaces. Certainly worth a visit if you’re in Margate. Would return for future exhibitions.
