Fabulous pizza-making fun
Aug 2021
Just had a cracking night at The Chequers cookery school, between Deal and Sandwich on the East Kent coast - a pizza-making birthday evening for a friend. Most of us only knew the birthday girl not each other, but the making, cooking and eating of the pizzas gave us lots to talk about. The evening flowed beautifully - lots of laughter and fun! A big 'thank you' to Stephanie, Pieter and all the Chequers team.

Terrible place to find!
Jan 2020
Had booked my 11 grandson a place on a 'pasta from scratch ' course, thought I might get an e-mail a day or so before with directions and what time we needed to be there i.e. 10 mins early, but nothing. We drove to postcode and seemed to be in a farm track! I had phoned 10 mins before as we had got stuck in traffic but it went straight to voice mail, so couldn't phone for directions. Luckily we saw a runner and asked him, his reply was, he thought there was a restaurant further down the road, so we carried on down this single road track and finally found the place! On leaving we did spot a small sign with chequers kitchen on it, and in even smaller words, half a mile down lane, bit late now!
Luckily my grandson enjoyed the afternoon, but this is a course for younger children say under 10,very basic .

Knife skills.
Feb 2019 • Family
Came with my niece For the "knife skills" lesson, we made a Tuscan bean soup with our efforts and some how also squeezed in a bread roll making and shaping session, and very good they were too!
I bought one space for my teenage niece as a gift and one for myself to accompany/support her. I thought my knife skills were pretty good and I make bread every other week but I definitely benefitted from the lesson and my niece really enjoyed herself and was so proud of her creations. They looked great- better than mine sadly!
Pieter was great, endlessly patient and funny. It was a lovely chilled morning and everyone else on the course was equally chilled and lovely.
We will be back.

I really enjoyed the Italian cooking course delivered by Pieter. His relaxed teaching style makes learning a joy and the food is delicious! Certainly the best focaccia I ever had!

An enjoyable interlude!

I booked a tour through Royal Caribbean “Brilliance of the Seas” cruise during their British Isles cruise. While the write-up from Royal Caribbean was over the top talking about a hands on cooking experience, after speaking to the tour guide, Kath, she was surprised and so was Pieter when we arrived regarding hands-on lessons. Considering the relatively short time allocated for the trip, this should have been apparent to me when booking but I was just happy to take a leisurely drive through a beautiful countryside.

However, Pieter was absolutely a pleasure to watch and listen to while he was demonstrating the various steps to prepare our lunch meal. Several of us were able to get hands-on in preparing the ciabatta bread.

I would recommend the cookery school and especially the restaurant for anyone looking for good wholesome food prepared with locally sourced ingredients. If you are on a cruise excursion, this is a good trip for a break from the tourist traps that excursions typically turn into. Pieter is an entertaining host in a quaint setting and the meal he prepares for you is well worth it. I would love to come back and spend more time here!

Aug 2018 • Business
Really enjoyed this evening out with colleagues at Chequers Cookery School in Deal. Hands on cooking experience . We made Italian food lasagne, cannelloni, pine nut salad and 2 types of bread, washed down with some good quality wines. Would also recommend for friends and family. Great fun

Pie, potatoes and peas
Jun 2018 • Couples
My wife and I attended the Chequers Kitchen Cookery School for a community project cooking class. The menu consisted of a Polish style, enriched pastry apple pie and a potato and pea Nepalese curry.
Obvious things first: the setting is quiet and homely. The fixtures and fittings are of a very high quality and Pieter definitely has a pride in his work. Pieter is the owner and main cookery teacher and has many years experience under his belt in the restaurant and catering business. The ingredients provided for the simple menu (please note it was only simple as it was a community project aimed towards a range of cooking abilities) were of good quality and the end results were delicious. *Note the apple pie literally only made it about half a mile to my mother's house before it was ravished by the entire family.
Not so obvious things: Pieter does an incredible amount of work within the community with cooking classes run for vulnerable groups, the elderly and children. He is truly passionate about food and how we can improve our diet with better ingredients and better techniques.
The class was excellent and bettered other classes we have attended. We will most definitely refinish be booking other classes there as a couple and as a family.

Simply fantastic.
Feb 2018 • Friends
I attended an Italian cooking class this weekend and the entire experience was amazing. Pieter was extremely welcoming and immediately tried to learn everyone's name. We were then taken on an amazing journey and over a 4 hour period made an astonishing variety of dishes.
Pieter's delivery is excellent, constantly giving little snippets of advice whilst getting everyone making their own pasta, bread and sauces.
I recommend this to everyone - give it a go.

Team Event

Visited Chequers Cookery class as part of team away day and it was brilliant, thoroughly recommend it. Pieter was a great tutor and catered for everyone's needs. There was 10 of us with one being vegetarian and one who was allergic to shell fish and doesn't eat cheese. He ensured there was substitutions for these people. Everyone also worked together and helped each other and it was a great way of bonding. We all then sat down to eat everything we had cooked and was able to take our left overs away with us.
