Unique experience, but could be so much better

I can now say I've 'flown' on the only commercial hovercraft service in the world, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the facilities are very underwhelming. The terminals are run down with very limited facilities (even the coffee machine didn't work properly!), the windows were dirty and the souvenir shop has a very disappointing selection of items. The actual hovercraft is an amazing experience, but there's no need to rush for a window seat - they're all so dirty you can barely see out of them. It's a short 10-minute journey on one of the most unique forms of transportation in the world. I'd definitely recommend it, but Hovertravel could dramatically improve the entire experience with a little effort - I'd suggest starting by cleaning the windows!

Filthy facility

Used the toilet facilities at Hovertravel in Southsea. They were run down and filthy, obviously no cleaning rota. Not busy either, 10.30 Sunday morning and few passengers.

Over a three hour breakdown and total loss of service. Only one viable hovercraft on the whole service makes this really vulnerable to outage. Information about the event provided in such a way so as to make passengers miss the next Wightlink option which because of the outragiously large service intervals on that service meant that those turning up around (am didnt leave to 12:30pm

Thank you for your feedback and we apologise for the disruption to our service yesterday. We have planned maintenance weeks in November for our hovercraft which is essential as we operate year-round. During this month there are times when we only have one craft operating and unexpected issues can arise. We take onboard your comments about communication and are reviewing how we can improve the process of transferring our passengers to Wightlink. Our reliability is very high and we operated 99.12% of our advertised services in October.

bad bad bad no idea what this service is about they take money off you for no service even though you payed to travel on this hovercraft appalling service they just fill you with lies and then expect you to pay again to ride on it no chance twice now i have experienced this disgraceful service and all i wanted was to go on the thing well never ever again

This was my first time on a hovercraft so I had no idea what to expect. It was simple as getting a bus and the journey to Ryde was over in no time. Friendly staff and great value for money.

Bus tour - without a bus!

The Hover Rover Bus Tour advised the bus would be located next to the Hover terminal on the Isle of Wight. In reality it was a 1.5 hour journey by bus ( not included in the price) to get to the Rover Bus as the timetable had moved to a Winter schedule which is hidden in the T&C clause 4.2 and it is your responsibility to check in advance the bus availability. We were unable to do the bus tour as we had to get the hover back having not factored in an extra 1.5 hours x 2 for the return journey. When we requested a refund for the bus tour they did want to know and just referred us to the T&Cs even though the hover company had confirmed the bus would be waiting at the terminal.

Some of these third-party transport options are for seasonal periods and are not available throughout the year. Day trip by Hovercraft

We were on holiday on the Isle of Wight and I said to my wife do you fancy a hovercraft trip back to Southsea returning later in the day ? My wife looked at me strangely and said OK well we went out on the 11:20am which was full had a lovely day in Portsmouth and came back that evening and guess what we LOVED it the only scheduled Hovercraft service in the world and British to boot roll on our next holiday to IOW we will have another Hovertravel day trip on the Hovercraft well Done the Team very professional and friendly

Good for one journey but the other was very poor

Used a few times for holidays and this time wasn’t so great, the outward trip (ryde to Southport) was really smooth and josh at the ticket sales desk was great. The return trip at Southport wasn’t so good. We arrived one of the first to get a window seat for my 4 year old but just had crowds of people pushing past us to get to the front, not much waiting room or seats available on that side either. Staff had out a barrier to stop the crowds getting to much at one side of the waiting room meaning it caused more crowd pushing to the front.

Overall I probably wouldn’t use the service again and would get the fast ferry across so there’s more room (as it felt very cramped)
