About
Romsey Signal Box is a building from around 1865 and a working museum which gives an insight into the life of a railway signalman and railway signalling in general. Visitors of all ages can get a hands on experience by operating points, clearing signals and ringing bells to control a simulation of trains passing through Romsey. As well as the main attraction, the site has a visitor center containing artifacts and photographs and a cafe serving drinks and light refreshments. Disabled access is possible and although the operating floor is step access only we have installed a CCTV link to allow anyone to view the inside of the signal box from the ground floor visitor center.

All Aboard for a Great Experience! Our visit was fascinating, with loads of hands-on stuff. The café is welcoming and incredibly inexpensive. All the volunteers on site are friendly and knowledgeable. Great entertainment for any age of visitor.

So interesting

This is a fascinating place run by friendly, knowledgeable staff. The demos in the signal box itself were truly enlightening and I felt I properly understood our railway history from these. Well worth a visit, I’d say.

Great hidden treasure

What a lovely morning out. Some great volunteers to show you around the site and signal box.
A must for both adults and children to get a bit of railway and signalling history and a chance to play with the signal box levers.
The volunteers will take you through some of the history of the box and a background to signalling the. You goto the box and you are taken on a journey of part of a signalmans day and get the chance to pull some of the levers in the box.

Incredible fun

Today we visited Romsey Signal Box and it was such a lovely trip out. There’s so much to see and learn, and there are lots of signal levers to pull! We took our baby and our 4 year old son, and no one wanted to leave - every volunteer is so passionate and so full of knowledge about the line and how the box works.

We also had a gorgeous slice of cake at the cafe and they were very accommodating to our baby girl.

We look forward to our next visit!

Fantastic community-run museum!
Sep 2019
Visited during Heritage Weekend. A lovely little surprise at the end of a private road. A community-run small museum but great interactives and a great little cafe for a cream tea on a sunny day! A step back in time definitely and supported by a team of knowledgable and friendly volunteers.

Preserving people's history

Good to see everyday history being preserved not just the abodes of the great and good, a reminder of how transport has developed in a short period of time relatively.

Avid railroaders will love this
Jun 2019 • Friends
Now to set the context why I only rated this an average attraction is because I compare to all other attractions. It is not a "must see". I mean, we are not talking the Tower of London here. But it is very well done and the volunteers are enthusiastic and amazing. I went here as my Father was an avid model railroader and I know he would have loved to have seen this. This signal box was operating until 1982 so for railroad historians it is of great significance and I think it is wonderful that the people of Romsey saved it from destruction. It is usually only open one Sunday a month and there is free parking next door.

Very enjoyable example of railway history for both adults and children including a working signal box and a splendid museum full of memorabilia about the life of this signal box. Well done to the Volunteers.
