A brilliant day remembering how it was; we loved it, the old fashioned adverts, everyone in costume, the trains of course, it was fantastic. Everything just like it used to be, everyone so friendly and even dogs were welcome. The food in the cafe was delicious, but our evening dinner was quite simply amazing - first class and five star.... More

Arrived at Alresford station - free parking on Sundays - aiming to catch the 11:45 train, but it was cancelled due to "steaming issues". This was a blessing in disguise as it allowed us to walk some of the picturesque Millennium trail around the town (despite the rain showers) before catching the 13:00 to Alton. Buffet shop on the platform... More

To be honest, we did not pick the best day. Storm Doris was trying to blow us off the platform, and crossing the Kings Cross bridge was like climbing Everest. On reflection, however, it was a good day to come. There were very few other passengers, and we were able to have a good view of everything. It was wonderful... More

I adore things from yesteryear. I appreciate the romance of an old steam train with old classic sprung seat benches, slide down windows, wood panelled surround and honest old fashioned conveniences. Now I've tried it, the RAT (Real Ale Train) is one of my favourite things in the world. Will I be back? YES. Boarded at around 7pm, around 200... More

Arrived early and had a good chat with the friendly, knowledgeable volunteers. Rode the line all day on steam trains pulled by a Tank Engine and a Black 5. Had time in Alton, New Aylesford and Ropey, visiting all the various attractions on offer. Didn't have time to visit the Towns and villages as there was plenty to occupy us... More

Has been a while since we last visited and it had been too long. Visited during the Spring Gala with steam seeming to come from every direction. Watched from the platform at Medstead where the train cross. Fascinating to watch.

An excellent nostalgic day out, great, passionate volunteers. But for 3 adults and a 5yr old child £56 was steep for the limited amount to be seen and done on a cold February day. We would love to go again but feel it's very expensive and would suggest an 'out of season' lower price with perhaps a few basic activities... More

This railway is an excellent heritage revival of a Southern Railways line from some time before Nationalisation. I was impressed by the standard of the buildings, recreations of historically accurate rooms on stations and the general friendliness of the welcome. The trains, admittedly not busy in February, were very clean and the stock well prepared and well heated on a... More

A beautifully maintained and - clearly - much-loved steam railway full of authenticity and memory-jogging artefacts. The staff -with one exception - were helpful and committed. The one exception was the woman who ran the cafe at Alresford station who was just short of rude. She was so unlike the rest of the people there, it really drew attention to... More
