Wonderful day spent at the museum today. Myself and two kids and my friend and two kids. Craft area staff are SO friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

Excellent Holocaust Exhibition
Jul 2021
The ground and first floor exhibitions are of no great interest. However the Holocaust exhibition on the second floor was worth the journey.. Tracing the lives of young survivors who came to live and eventually settle down.

Great museum. Liked the choice of objects on display and the way they were interpreted. Informative and interactive. Would visit again. Good for all ages. Friendly staff.

Social History of the area
Mar 2019 • Solo
I hadn’t noticed this museum when I had previously been to Waltham Abbey but spotted it today when visiting the area.
Not a lot of people know that the authors of two popular nursery rhymes lived in Essex - Jane Taylor from Ongar with her Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star written in 1805 and a year later Sarah Martin who lived at Loughton wrote Old Mother Hubbard.
These are just two of the things that I learned about the area from visiting the museum.
It’s a really good social history museum in which exhibits are set over 3 floors (there is a lift for those with mobility issues).
There are all sorts there from a mammoth tusk, Tudor items like the gorgeous wooden panelling from 1526, Victorian items and things from the 1940s / 50s. In one of the drawer exhibits on the 2nd floor there were some sweet wrappers that I hadn't seen since I was a child which was Dr Who Chocolate from the 1970s.
At the moment there is a special exhibition on their called snapping the stiletto all about remarkable Essex women like Florence Attridge.
All the local history items are very well exhibited, there is something for everyone, the staff are friendly and it’s very clean there.
A little girl of about 4 summed it up when she was playing with the child’s tea set on the first floor when she said "Mummy I want to come back here again its really interesting".
I too will certainly pop along again the next time I am in the area as it will be great to see the gorgeous wooden panelling on the ground floor and play shove ha penny again - who ever would have known that I would be so good at it :)
If you are planning a visit please note that the museum is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.

Interesting Little Gem
Nov 2018 • Friends
This is a lovely compact museum set over 3 floors (with a lift). Although I have lived within easy reach of this museum had never visited it. It is so very interesting and because it centres its finds on a local area, you will find lots that interest you.

We went as a group and were lucky enough to have a talk which made so many items come to life instead of just looking at them in display boxes.

Well worth a visit

From outside you have no inkling of what lies inside. This is a fascinating free museum with plenty to see inside an a well tended garden outside. The display of swimwear through the ages was very interesting and the film of Clacton in years gone by brought back personal memories.

People, stop pinching the halfpenny's
Mar 2018 • Friends
Found this museum's exhibits varied and interesting. It is set out over three or so floors but there is a small lift for those that have difficulty climbing stairs. A varied programme of different activities over the next few months for a small fee are also available. Entry to the museum is free with opportunity to volunteer if local. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.
