About
On selected dates in 2024, 300 years of intrigue and history in a stunning natural setting are ready to explore. Visitor activities, a busy schools programmes, talks, walks, tractor tours, railway rides, exhibitions, workshops and re-enactments are amongst the ways visitors can explore and enjoy our unique site this year. Much of the 170 acre site is now a scheduled ancient monument and site of special scientific interest. The nature reserve attracts a wide range of birds, such as the siskin, barn owls, herons and kingfishers. Other animals that make their home at the Mills include fallow deer, muntjac, grass snakes and various species of bat. Please note that we’re opening differently to the way we’ve opened in the past with a programme of selected activities replacing our standard opening. Sadly Professor Nitrate won't be with us this year but there will be exciting new activities and events coming up. Make sure you check our website and book before you travel!

Attended as part of a school trip / had never heard of it before.

We had Izzy and Colin deliver two different inputs to the children, Izzy’s was very interactive - they could handle exhibits and learn about what it must have been like for children being evacuated during the war. There was lots of opportunity for them to ask and answer questions and they really enjoyed trying the old stirrup pump!

Colin delivered a talk posing as a WWI ARP and I have to say he was AMAZING! He had us all totally enthralled and entertained with his passionate talk on the history of the site. His talk was the perfect balance of science, history and even Panto- esque humour!

The museum was fantastic, lots of interactive exhibits, the play area is great, I will definitely be back with the family!

I have been here a few times over the years and I think it's a good place for a day out with the family. There is lots to do for kids - playground with zip wire, make and launch a rocket, entertaining nutty professor shows, an interesting museum and armory and also wildlife. Several of the staff have a very good knowledge of the site, having worked there when it was still an active research centre, and they are only too happy to talk to you which adds to the interest.

The tractor tour is very good with lots of opportunity to spot wildlife. The train ride is okay if you are keen on mini railways but you don't really see any more of the site doing it.

They have just reopened after two years so not sure if they will be improving the cafe but it was really just crisps, biscuits and drinks when we went. I seem to remember them offering more than that previously so maybe that was just a temporary thing. You can take food with you though.

All in all, worth a visit.

What a great day out. The volunteers were really friendly and helpful. I must report that Professor Nitrate was just brilliant ...!!! He had everyone laughing out loud and the show was really entertaining and fun plus educational for the kids. We will return next year when site re-opens as we ran out of time to see everything. Thoroughly recommend this place !!

Visited in half term with my nephew's, they enjoyed the hands on experience and professor Nitrates show, to be honest I think I enjoyed it even more., the on-site cafe was outstanding, we all had a nice meal, it was good to get decent food without getting ripped off like some theme parks..
All the staff were friendly and helpful throughout the day.fully recommended 👍 👍

This must be the most friendly welcoming place I’ve been too. The volunteers couldn’t do enough to ensure you had a pleasant day. There is a tiny sit astride train that takes you to a bigger train which takes you round the huge site. Then you can have a tractor ride which tajes you via a different route along with an interesting running commentary. Much of the land has been contaminated with gunpowder and left to wildlife to enjoy. If you are lucky you will see a herd of deer. Tributaries from The River Lea weave among the rural area. There is a museum and armoury plus an interesting film to watch. The only down side is the cafe seems to only sell drinks, biscuits, crisps, icecream along with a few souvenirs which is a shame. We would have loved a light lunch but apparently at the moment this isn’t an economical proposition. There are plenty of picnic benches to use if you take your own food. For the children there is an excellent park with a zip wire and a crazy scientist making explosives. He’s fun to watch and had I had him teach me at school I’d have loved it. Overall a lovely interesting 4 hours.

Absolutely brilliant day out, run mainly.by volunteers many who had worked at the mill, this really is a gem. Plenty to do and fire up the kids imagination and great to learn about such a rich history in the local area.

There were crazy science experiments, a train ride, a tractor ride and a reasonably priced cafe (we only had drinks so not sure what food was available).

We had a brilliant day!

What a hidden gem! Absolutely loved our visit, history was fascinating, staff were so friendly and the site was amazing to walk around. One of the best bits was Professor Nitrate’s two science shows which were absolutely hilarious and adults and kids loved it! Included in ticket price is a trip on the miniature railway or land train too! Cafe on site, plenty of parking including disabled. Only £10 for an adult ticket. Can’t recommend enough

The Freindly Helpful staff who led my husbands walking tour yesterday were brilliant. They are very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions and give people the time to take photos. Refreshments were provided at the start and finish of the tour and we stayed for a picnic lunch I had taken with us. They allowed me to wait for my husband while he walked and were very friendly with me sitting and waiting for him.
