Very interesting and very informative. So much to read about and learn how Dunwich was so large and how the power of the sea changed its fortunes

Well worth a visit!

Athelstan Museum is located on St James Street, Dunwich, is open 7 days a week (between 11.30 and 16.30), is dog friendly and does not charge an entrance fee (donations welcome or buy something from the shop).

The Museum is small but full of interesting information and artefacts and its surprising the amount of information packed into a small space.

It tells the history of Dunwich over the centuries, from a Roman fort to the capital of a Saxon Kingdom, to 11th Century port (one of the greatest on the east coast) with its own mint, most of it being lost to the North Sea and up to the present day tiny village of barely more than 120 people and a few offshore fishing boats.

In addition they run a series of short term exhibitions with interactive effects for all; and the museum volunteers are there to explain and elaborate as necessary.

All in all, well worth a visit if you are in the area and want to know more about its history.

If you weren't convinced about the power of the sea then pay s visit to Dunwich and its museum.
A fascinating place probably unknown to most of us. Yet it was one of the country's most important cities a thousand years ago.

A hidden gem on the coast.

We visited the museum on a Sunday and it seemed a popular place to be. Despite the small size the museum has implemented a one way system which works well. The museum is essentially two rooms one above the other. The center piece of the ground floor is the model of the village in medieval times showing how the once large town has been lost to the sea over the years. Meanwhile around the walls are some interesting finds that have been made in the area with background history of how Dunwich grew to be one of the most significant ports on the east coast before losing its port and then declining into obscurity over many years. The upper floor focusses more on the natural side of the locality with birds and animals that can be found area as well as a film show on the history of the town. Overall worth a visit and certainly worth more than the £2 suggested donation to get in.

A little gem

Small, but full of interest. Dunwich was once a major port, and this museum tells its history. Good for kids too.

Sweet local museum well worth a visit

Dunwich is a somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for a long time. Strange stories of 12 churches that disappeared beneath the sea following a great storm in 1287. It’s all explained in this local museum - giving you all the history and natural history of the mysterious village that was once one of the most important places in England. Well worth popping in.

Our visit to the museum

We spent 3 nights in Dunwich. We had no idea of the history of the village but the museum portrayed it so well. The volunteer on duty had so much knowledge and was able to tell us about the loss of this city to the sea and it's impact on the port and why the village is how it is today.
I would recommend a visit to this museum to anyone who is interested in history

Popped in on New Year's eve - well worth a visit. It's free of charge and you can make a donation. Interesting to read about the history of Dunwich and see some of the local archaeological finds.

Easily missed

A tiny museum in an ordinary village house, but it is a gem capturing the lost era of a once great place. Upstairs it can be very atmospheric as the sun goes down, almost ghostly, but there is a reputation for hauntings in this area. Walk the village at dusk, listen and look!

A compact but fascinating museum providing real insight into a lost town
Oct 2019
Dunwich is a village that is a little off the beaten track, so it is hard to image it being a bustling town but the small museum tells a fascinating story about how the sea encroached upon the settlement until only what we see today remains. There is a model of the village and a video presentation upstairs (lift available for those with difficulty mobilising) but all the artifacts which have been recovered and some of the photographs make this a must see attraction. The price is right (free) but its worth a donation.
