About
Galleri Svalbard was established in 1995. The gallery displays the permanent art and culture collections from Kåre Tveter, The Svalbards Collection (arctic maps, books and money) and The Recherche Collection (litographies fra the expeditions in 1838 og 1839). The gallery also has art for sale and displays 7-8 new exhibitions a year. In our museum shop there is also a selection of gift articles and books with different art books, general literature about Svalbard and a selection of designer goods. Coffee, tea and various refreshments are offered in the Art Café. Right next to us is The Arts and Crafts Centre of Longyear, where local artisans exhibit their works.

We walked up from the town. It is a pleasant walk, about 3 km from the center of town. There are a number of artists working here. An excellent gallery and coffee bar. We purchased a few items from one of the artists. (The photographer on the second floor. She has some excellent polar bear photos) We very much enjoyed our brief stop.

After two weeks on a small ship this was our first experience of Longyearbyen. The art was varied and well displayed. There was also a small cafe and a lovely gift shop. A nice calm atmosphere.

We tried to pop in before our flight home but the venue does not open before 11.00 which is annoying. It looked good from the outside but will never know

It was interesting to come here for the temporary exhibition - and artist who has genuinely managed to capture the light of the arctic (summer exh 2019) but what was just as interesting was the collection of books and maps. This was highly relevant in understanding Svalbard history.
Recommendable!

This place is nice to visit, it's bigger than it looks from the outside. We spent more than an hour watching the beautiful pictures.

Svalbard is a terrific place to visit as part of a winter holiday, the people are extremely helpful and friendly to visitors.
Our trip on snowmobiles to the radio station hotel 90klms was an unbelieveable experience, our guide made sure we were safe at all times and our hosts at the radio station hotel were delightful. The food was amazing and we had a great experience.

The collection of historical maps concerning the discovery of Spitsbergen is of great interest. In particular the maps showing the original names (mainly Dutch and English) before many of the names were 'Norwegianised'. Gilesland gets a mention.

Called into the Gallery regarding a photography issue. Spoke to a very friendly, professional lady in the gallery.

She was very friendly and helpful. They do have a small amount of photographic equipment for sale.

But some of the photos taken by the two Gallery Photographers are excellent.

While talking to this lady. She confirms the two photographers do wildlife photographic tours. Which i had not found on my research prior to going to Svalbard.

Contact the Gallery via their website if you wanted to book some trips rather than the usual Spitsbergen/Hurrigriten trips

They specialist re all wildlife, polar bears.

Even though i was not able to rectify my photographic equipment problem till i got home. It was really nice vositing the gallery and having a chat with this friendly Norwegian lady. Discussing wildlife photographic trips they do. Contact for a bespoke and small group trips

I often take a liking to small, intimate galleries and museums, so this art exhibition was fantastic. They have a beautiful collection of studies on Arctic light and maps, and a space where you can purchase crafts from local artists. Admission was about 70 NOK, well spent.
