About
Green Dog separates from other commercial dog kennels at Svalbard, since our dogs are a mix between the Greenland dog and husky – and also, since our family, consisting of 2 adults and 4 children – and our guides – are living at the kennel, year round. We put dog welfare above all, so it was a natural choice to live at the kennel, to be present with our 4 legged friends, at all times. When our dogs retire, we put great effort in finding new families for them and this has resulted in many happy relationships. You can read about some of our pensioners at the blog at www.greendog.no. We offer tours with our dogs year around - on dog sledges in winter and on carts or by foot, accompanied by a happy Green Dog, in summer. To give you the best experience, our sled tours are for maximum 8 guests and everybody gets the chance to steer the dog sled. All of our tours includes coffee & biscuits and we offer a 50% discount for children up to 12 years. We look forward seeing you!

We had a really nice trip with the dogs and our competent and caring guide Jan. You can really tell that the dogs are the number one priority for Green Dog. It was an additional bonus that we had plenty of time to get to know and cuddle with the dogs before and after the trip. Really recommendable to visit the nice little society of Green Dog!

Dear Green Dog
Many thanks for an unforgettable trip to beautiful Svalbard, where we had the opportunity to see the landscape via your dog sleds. It was a fantastic experience, and you can tell that you are passionate about what you do!
I can only give 5 stars for my experience ☺️

I really enjoyed this experience. Collected from my hotel and driven to the dog yard. Rebecca my guide was very knowledgeable and knew the dogs personally. It was clear that she had a great relationship with the dogs and knew them well. We were given suits, boots and gloves to wear. Helmets are avaliable if wanted, before having time to go meet the dogs. Then we were shown how to operate the sled before setting off. We stopped to give the dogs water and change positions of wanted. Driving the sled was definitely an experience! On our return to the dog yard we were shown how to remove the dogs harness before changing out of the suits. A short drive later we were in a cabin having hot drinks and waffles before meeting a puppy. We went to see the latest pups and view more dogs. I found it hard to see how the dogs live but realise they are not pets but working dogs. Overall a fantastic experience, hopefully to be repeated one day on snow

There is something unique to travel a wild area like Svalbard the way our ancestors did a long time ago. The dogs are amazing and friendly and the staff is professional. We had Allan from Chile as our guide, and I can't imagine anyone who could be better or nicer than him. There are alot of things to do in Svalbard but skipping the dog sleds is something you will regret. We did a half a day trip but are already planning to come again and do the few day trip.

We went dog sledding as a small group and it was good! Being the oldest of our group, we had it easy. We sat on the sled and the guide did the hard work although I did try my hand at sledding. It's rather like riding a bicycle: there are rules but the lead dog knows them. We had a wonderful time ending back in the cabin for cookies and coffee generously laced with brandy. It's not to be missed.

Absolutely a MUST when visiting Svalbard!
We were picked up by the most enthusiastic guide (Johnny), who was pleasant and had an amazing personality all the way through.
We were driven to the Kennel where we got to help rig up the sleds as well as cuddle with all the dogs while getting them suited up and sorted for the different sleds.
Our guide was helpful, calm, and supportive throughout the entire process. The animals were excited, well-trained, and extremely friendly.
The ride itself was an incredible showing of Svalbard's gorgeous nature which was mind-blowingly beautiful.
Will definitely be going with Green Dog again when visiting Svalbard. Cannot recommend them highly enough

I feel very privileged to have experienced one of the best Svalbard winter activities this year. We were extremely lucky to have beautiful warm sunny weather on the day of our trip. Dogs look very well looked after, very attentive and friendly guide. The entire trip was super fun, 10/10 experience!

I am looking for dog sled trips anywhere from March 21 till March 27, 2024. I am traveling solo, so it would be better if I could sign up for a tour that already has met the minimum number of people. Do you have a list of available tours and prices? I will be staying at Haugen Pensjonat Svalbard hotel.
Thank you,
Steven Jensen

Hi,
I'm going on this tour tomorrow morning, and was wondering how physically exerting it is. I have wheezing, and was not able to go for one of my ice cave tours today because it involved a lot of climbing uphill. I was wondering if the same thing happens in this tour.
I read that you need to push the dog sled uphill, and I was wondering how long this usually takes.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you !
Shwetha

Hi there,
I was wondering if you could tell me whether we would need special gear for this expedition? If so, where do you rent it from? Do they provided? or do you have to find a shop? Last but not least...is it very expensive? Many thanks! x

Hi, All you need are good thermals, gloves, hat and thinner outdoor gear. They will suply you with a snowmobile dress and warmer shoes if needed. For a four hour trip I think you pay something like 1200nok. You can book it through visitsvalbard beforehand or any hotel you are staying at, the tourist information while on location.

I am interested in joining a 3 day Green Dog Tour in February 2018, what part of the month is the better date to join a tour? I have just read that in Feb the tour was in total darkness a lot of the time. I am interested in experiencing the Blue Light. How far ahead do you need to book a tour?
Written April 23, 2017
Hei there
If you wish to experience blue light , then February is definently the best month for visiting. We get 40 mins more light pr day, so theres a big difference in start/end of February. However, the Blue light is best in the beginning of February. We have Maximum 5 guests pr multiday trip and we already start getting bookings now, so its a good idea to book early.
Best Greetings,
Green Dog Svalbard
