About
Aquaworld - Crete's first Aquarium - opened in Hersonissos in 1995 - near Bus Stop 20. It features local sea life and reptiles from Crete and from all around the world. Most of the animals are rescued or are unwanted pets which have found a new home at Aquaworld. Our philosophy is simple - bring people and animals closer together and, inevitably, people will begin to respect and care more about the animals!

- René E1 contributionSmall but nice facility that, among other things, takes care of rescued animals. Reptiles in particular have found their way here in various ways. The highlight is definitely the almost blind sea turtle and the opportunity to hold a constrictor snake or a monitor lizard in your arms. The respectful treatment of animals is demonstrated here. You shouldn't let the queue put you off. They make sure that it doesn't get too crowded and that everyone has enough space and time to look at everything.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 27, 2024
- AmandaPlymouth, United Kingdom10 contributionsRead the reviews before we came and we weren’t disappointed at all. The owners/staff are caring and so informative. Loved the iguanas and tortoise’s just wandering outside. They even get the snakes out of the tanks. I would recommend getting there for 10am for the feeding and then at 10.30am the owner feeds the octopus who opens his own jar for food! The place is small but has plenty to see, took us about 1 hour.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 16, 2024
- Mike C30 contributionsI loved it, the interaction for people especially children was great. I think I describe it as a labour of live from which an aquarium and reptile centre had been born. The love of their mission comes through as you speak to the staff there and you never felt rushed or pressured into moving around. It's a small aquarium but we still spent about 3 hours there with the 4 year olds engrossed by the hands on reptile area all of whom were very well behaved and supervised (reptiles that is, 4 year olds are 4 year olds) The stories about how all the inhabitants of the aquarium arrived was added value. I found entrance fee higher than i expected but actually when you compare it to the value we got out of it it was well worth it. There is a small gift shop on site that supports the running of the centre and its one where you can take a top back and say yes I did a good thing by buying thatVisited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 16, 2024
- JuliaSkurup, Sweden20 contributionsMe and my mother went there as we both love sealife and reptiles. Absoluetly amazing! Nice prices and really kind staff. There was alot of different aquariums and alot of information about the fish and I loved the beautiful seaturtle! They have loads of different reptiles and a reptile garden where some can go free. They are also really careful and makes sure that everyone is having a good time and I have to say that the animals loved the attention. It was on their own terms and not really forced, they had full access to their inclosures incase they wanted to be alone. When you come in there's also cute drawing that guests have made which they show off proudly. I highly recommend this placeVisited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 9, 2024
- Usernametaken9078 contributionsHighlight of our holiday and totally worth the trip! I came here terrified of snakes and wouldn’t go near them to start, at the end I held the huge yellow one they had, ALONE! The men that work there are so passionate about the animals and are so knowledgeable, it’s a very relaxed atmosphere and the animals are very well cared for, it’s like a petting zoo for reptiles where they freely roam. The big tortoise is funny, one minute you’re standing there chatting the next you have a giant tortoise walking over your foot or barging you out of the way 😂 It’s a shame there arnt more places like this as it massively helped me overcome my fears of reptiles and I ended up petting and holding all that I could. The entry price is also very reasonable, a must if in or staying near Hersonnisos.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 10, 2024
- WestEnd_926 contributionsA small and perfectly formed aquarium and reptile garden. A lovely place to spend an hour. Suitable for kids of all ages and interesting for adults too. A very reasonably priced activity for the family and my children loved it. They went twice - once with me then felt they needed to bring their dad back the following day so he could see it too. Last entry is 3.15pm. We got here around 3pm on our first visit and it was alot quieter than the second time when it was very busy at 11am. We didn't feel rushed at all even though they where closing up at 4pm. Highly recommend.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 17, 2024
- Jean v3 contributionsAmazing experience. They take good care of the animals and the exhibits look good. Was a nice extra thing to be able to hold a Burmese python and a bearded dragon. One downside is that it's a tad small, so if you expect to be spending hours, you'll be disappointed.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 20, 2024
- Angie7052London, United Kingdom7 contributionsThis is a wonderful place to visit with lovely staff dedicated to dispelling myths about reptiles and some amazing specimens. The aquariums include two different octopus and other fish that can be found in the sea around Crete but it is the reptile garden that is really wonderful in my view. If you are on Crete and you want to do something other than sit on the beach I would recommend this to you.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 18, 2024
- Kat C61 contributionsAbsolutely incredible. What these guys do is fantastic. The place is spotlessly clean. The tanks are crystal clear. The place is small but they have crammed so much in. It is very clear to see they love what they do and are really passionate about it. The reptile section was a treat. Bring able to interact with animals usually seen in a zoo was fab. Really educational too. Really rare this place. And for €10 per adult a bargain. We gave an extra donation because we thought it was deserved. We thought we might be there an hour tops dye to the size. We were there for nearly 3 hrs! Will definitely come back next time in ChersonissosVisited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 20, 2024
- nickWirral, United Kingdom19 contributionsVery educational and informative, well worth a visit at €10 for adults and €5 for children. The reptiles are well cared for and you can see this in the staff especially Colin, he gave us lots of information on the reptiles as they are walking around your feet. You can even have the opportunity to have your photo with one of the enormous snakes. It’s only small but this didn’t put us off and can get busy so be patient. The aquarium is brilliant, the poor sea turtle is going blind and is hand feed every day at half ten. Check it out much better than the other aquarium in my opinion and if you can please leave a donation on your way out so much care goes into Aquaworld Aquarium & Reptile Rescue Centre. Thanks for reading.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 1, 2024

It was like going into someone's home and it was completely filled with aquariums and terrariums. These were all sparsely furnished with little distraction for the animals that lived here. It's nice that they have a better place here than where they came from, but I wouldn't call it a paradise for them. There was also a boa terrarium open, measuring about 2.5 meters, at ground level. I tapped the owner who was having fun with tourists and asked if this was the intention, but he joked that it was not, it was to scare the tourists. I personally cannot see the humor in this because people were poking the animal and there were also small children running around. Definitely an option for a hose of that size. He also allowed smaller species of snakes and bearded dragons to pass through everyone's hands, which doesn't seem pleasant to me day in and day out. As an animal lover, I actually quickly left with a sad feeling.

They have a wide variety of creatures on display, many of which have been rescued, or are waiting for return to the wild. That side of things is fascinating, and worth supporting.
As others have mentioned, it’s a very small space and can get very crowded. We didn’t feel able to linger or read much of the information. The garden area was particularly tricky, which was a shame as my daughter was hoping to handle a snake, but felt overwhelmed by the queues and the number of people.
If you go - think of it as a donation to support important work, not as a visit to a typical aquarium.

Definitely worth a visit. There’s lots of things for people to see. There is an interactive section of the aquarium where you can see a tortoise walking round and there is also a handling session of snakes too.
It is rather small, so we were out within around 30 minutes but I would still recommend people to go if you’re wanting a change of scenery.
For adults it was 8 euros each, unsure about child prices.

This was our second time here, after our July 2020 visit, when we all had a great time. That was the reason my oldest son really wanted to visit again when we found ourselves in Crete again. But I really wish we didn't as it would have spared us the disappointment and spoiling of our memories. Maybe because it was the pandemic, or a morning visit, or simply luck, I don't know, but last time the boys got to hold so many snakes and other reptiles, learn about them and take lovely pictures as memories. This time however, we felt almost invisible. The youngish robot like man that lacks any face expression and vocabulary, just put a snake on my son's arms, mumbled "no neck" , left it there for like a minute and then took it away. The older man, was talkative all right, but only to 3 young danish girls, to whom he was glued to. We managed to steal his attention for a couple of minutes, only to find himself back to the girls again. Felt like a popularity contest or something in which of course we stood no chance. In 2020 I happily paid the 30 euros (for the 4 of us) for entrance, but this time around I felt robbed. And seeing the "tips" box on our way out felt almost insulting.

Was a really good experience… the line before entering looked extremely intimidating to start off with but we only had to wait for around 10 minutes.
There was a really nice indoor aquarium showing all variety of fish, star fish, octopus’, sting rays and of course the infamous blind sea turtle. There are arrows directing a one way system but found that not a lot of people followed this.
Outside, it is true what they say, you are encouraged to get up close and personal. There was a family or tortoises free roaming, as well as a large snake, a corn snake, a bearded dragon and other lizards too.
you are encouraged to hold both snakes as well as the bearded dragon and to touch/stroke the rest of the animals with open cages. This was a great experience however was very very crowded, there was no organisation and people were everywhere however we still all managed to do and see what we wanted!
Was a great experience overall! 💯

I'm normally a fan of zoos and aquariums, but here I had a bad feeling the whole time about having spent money on this. The aquariums and terrariums were poorly furnished, if at all. Many aquariums were far too small for the fish kept in them. In two tanks I saw animals that were either already dead or almost dead. If fish are gasping for air at the surface (no, it wasn't a labyrinth fish) and have milky eyes, that's not a sign of good health. The reptiles that were running around freely outside were also OK, but the question is whether everyone should touch them. Please, everyone, take a look at the Cretaaqurium instead.

Small aquarium with different fish and also reptiles. Downside is, since it’s so small, you don’t spend a lot of time in here, probably only about an hour, probably less and it quickly gets crowded with all the people.
They do have reptiles roaming around outside, which is really cool, because you get to touch them.

Nice little aquarium that takes about an hour to visit. Highlights are the turtles that roam freely and the snakes that you can have your photo taken with. If you can read fluent English, you can read about many of the animals and facts and stay there for longer. Since sick animals are cared for here, the entrance fee of €10 is absolutely reasonable.

We came here 2 years ago and the kids loved it. We returned this year and again a great visit, it’s only small so you will likely be done within and hour and a half but it’s very interactive with snakes, lizards and tortoises outside for you to touch or hold and the owner who really cares for the animals does little talks. Tip - it gets busy, if you get there for 10 am you can see the animals having their breakfasts.

I popped by one afternoon, and absolutely had to come back the next day! Everyone was incredibly welcoming, and the entire experience caught me entirely off guard in the absolute best way possible. I never hated reptiles, but I certainly was extremely wary of them before visiting Aquaworld. This visit successfully broke this barrier down : the experience of not just holding, but interacting with, reptiles made me realise how incredibly alive and aware they are. As a biology enthusiast, I was also extremely happy to find information on the walls to prompt an evening of reading various Wikipedia articles, as my interest in some reptiles’ third eye was piqued by a comparison with the human pineal gland. On day 2, I came back to watch the sea turtle being fed. The way John spoke so passionately about his ambition to secure her habitat for another 20 years of growth before his retirement seriously touched me. It was on par with how I would feel if I ever met David Attenborough in person, and I don’t think it’s possible for me to pay a higher compliment than that.
Aquaworld is small, but absolutely jam-packed with information and heart. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Bonjour,

Meilleures salutations
John
