About
Aquaworld - Crete's first Aquarium - opened in Hersonissos in 1995 - near Bus Stop 20. It features local sea life and reptiles from Crete and from all around the world. Most of the animals are rescued or are unwanted pets which have found a new home at Aquaworld. Our philosophy is simple - bring people and animals closer together and, inevitably, people will begin to respect and care more about the animals!

    Absolutely amazing!
This was an absolutely amazing experience, don’t think I have ever seen anything quite like it!! The interactions with the reptiles and special knowledge of the staff makes this place an absolute gem!! We felt like we learnt so much, and didn’t end up wanting to leave!! This place deserves as much attention as possible, such a good cause and really lovely people, will definitely return :)

Lovely place, would absolutely recommend, 10/10
Visited this centre while on girls holiday in Crete, would absolutely recommend, was one of my favourite experiences out of the whole trip. All the staff were extremely knowledgable (shoutout John the legend 😁) and were enthusiastic to talk and answer all of our questions. You can absolutely tell how much the animals are cared for and loved, making the time even more enjoyable. 10/10, I would highly advise visiting.

    A lovely little experience
Something a little different to see and do whilst visiting Hersonissos. An amazing range of sealife and reptiles, very interactive and informative, and a lovely team of people. We arrived early in the morning and were able to watch the reptiles having their breakfast, take some great photographs and hold some of the snakes and lizards! The owner is so lovely and it's great to see that the majority of animals are rescues. Definitely worth visiting!

    Well worth a visit
Great selection of animals and well worth a visit. Its not a very large place so we only stayed about an hour, if that. Also worth noting you can't take pushchairs inside so these are left in the front area off the road, they seem perfectly safe there with lots of people doing it. There's a lovely little courtyard outside at the back where you can see the turtles and they let some of the animals roam about. You can hold them, feed them etc. Really great for kids.

    Well worth a visit
Our first impression getting out of the taxi was “it’s a bit small” but once we got in and got chatting to one of the reptile handlers we learned so much. We had the chance to handle many of their rescued reptiles and this gave us the chance to really understand their plight and behaviours. Definitely worth a visit.

What a way to end our special time in Crete. Loved this place!
So much fun! We had a great 1.5 hour visit to this gem of an aquarium and reptile rescue! Our family of 6 including “kids” from age 7 to young adult had a blast hearing about the animals from John and getting kisses on the nose from one of the rescued reptilian guests. Holding the snake was also so fun’ Enjoyed the sea turtle and octopus feeding. Great visit and great place to support. (Didn’t get everyone’s name but grateful to each member of the team for making our last few hours in Crete so memorable!) thank you!!

It's a small place but well worth a visit. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. We got to hold lizards and snakes, plenty of staff around to encourage you and make sure all people and animals are safe. We also got to watch the octopus open a jar to get it's food. My favourite experience in Hersonissos

    Fantastic visitor attraction
Absolutely fantastic facility. The building doesn't look big from the outside. The welcome is friendly. While the centre is no frills, it is spotless. Some staff are multilingual and answer any questions - however daft - from visitors. The tanks are clean and the descriptive posters are informative. It's good to be able to get interactive with the reptiles and they all look healthy. A fab visitor attraction.

A small facility but an amazing experience
Very small facility but don’t be put off by it’s external appearance and size. This place it’s about 2 things only 1. Care for animals and 2. Quality of experience for visitors. There is a great range of animals to view and learn about, but also get hands on with. All staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, patiently helping all visitors to hold and experience the animals. My two kids are pretty much fearless and will barely hesitate to hold all manner of weird and wonderful creatures. But while there I saw other kids who were much more apprehensive. The staff were very patient and encouraging with these people which in my view is about passion for these animals and wanting everyone to enjoy them. We went at 10am opening time which is breakfast time so a great opportunity.

Definitely worth a visit. There’s lots of things for people to see. There is an interactive section of the aquarium where you can see a tortoise walking round and there is also a handling session of snakes too.

It is rather small, so we were out within around 30 minutes but I would still recommend people to go if you’re wanting a change of scenery.

For adults it was 8 euros each, unsure about child prices.

I absolutely loved visiting this little aquarium & reptile centre. The staff clearly loved what they did and were very knowledgeable. We went around 11am and did have to queue for maybe 20 minutes which was not a problem as we were in the shade. Perhaps later in the afternoon heat that might become an issue (so take precautions in case, especially with fussy kids! There is a supermarket up the road though, if you end up needing an emergency ice cream) However, I think it's worth the wait. They did a really great job of curating the tanks thematically (and I'm sure with regard to how each fish interacts with one another), and the big green iguana and massive tortoise was a highlight! I was also lucky enough to handle the reticulated python who was so lovely and gentle.

We visited here after hearing about it from friends we’d met on holiday in the week. It is only small but full of heart. The people who own it and help run it are very welcoming and really informative. It offers you a hands on experience which is fantastic. We really enjoyed it. Keep doing amazing things Aquaworld and helping those animals that need you.

Husband and I visited here and on first impressions it didn’t look up to much. It’s very small and only so many visitors can get in at a time. Nice variety of fish in the tanks.
The highlight was meeting and holding the snakes and reptiles. The staff were very informative and were keen for you to get involved.
This place was far better value for money than the CretaAquarium.
We will visit again when we return next year.

I popped by one afternoon, and absolutely had to come back the next day! Everyone was incredibly welcoming, and the entire experience caught me entirely off guard in the absolute best way possible. I never hated reptiles, but I certainly was extremely wary of them before visiting Aquaworld. This visit successfully broke this barrier down : the experience of not just holding, but interacting with, reptiles made me realise how incredibly alive and aware they are. As a biology enthusiast, I was also extremely happy to find information on the walls to prompt an evening of reading various Wikipedia articles, as my interest in some reptiles’ third eye was piqued by a comparison with the human pineal gland. On day 2, I came back to watch the sea turtle being fed. The way John spoke so passionately about his ambition to secure her habitat for another 20 years of growth before his retirement seriously touched me. It was on par with how I would feel if I ever met David Attenborough in person, and I don’t think it’s possible for me to pay a higher compliment than that.
Aquaworld is small, but absolutely jam-packed with information and heart. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I took my three daughters, ages 6, 14 and 16, to Aquaworld Aquarium. They all seemed amazed, had smiles on their faces, and each had an opportunity to handle a reptile. What a wonderful opportunity to learn about reptiles up close! The staff at the aquarium were very friendly and the owner came out to demonstrate the octopus's trick of opening a jar containing its food. It is amazing to see just how clever and dexterous the Octopus is. That was fascinating to watch.

Visit this location if you have the chance. It's a fun hour or so with your family. In addition, if you have the pleasure of hearing directly from the owner about how the sanctuary/aquarium came to be, this is fascinating!

I like how this story has a personal touch... not an experience you could get from an impersonal big institute set up.

After walking around the aquarium, we decided to stay in the neighborhood and walk up the main shopping & tourist streets in Hernossisus and head a little towards the beach area. We had a great time walking around.

This was our second time here, after our July 2020 visit, when we all had a great time. That was the reason my oldest son really wanted to visit again when we found ourselves in Crete again. But I really wish we didn't as it would have spared us the disappointment and spoiling of our memories. Maybe because it was the pandemic, or a morning visit, or simply luck, I don't know, but last time the boys got to hold so many snakes and other reptiles, learn about them and take lovely pictures as memories. This time however, we felt almost invisible. The youngish robot like man that lacks any face expression and vocabulary, just put a snake on my son's arms, mumbled "no neck" , left it there for like a minute and then took it away. The older man, was talkative all right, but only to 3 young danish girls, to whom he was glued to. We managed to steal his attention for a couple of minutes, only to find himself back to the girls again. Felt like a popularity contest or something in which of course we stood no chance. In 2020 I happily paid the 30 euros (for the 4 of us) for entrance, but this time around I felt robbed. And seeing the "tips" box on our way out felt almost insulting.

Lovely visit here today with our 3 and 5 year old. Fantastic to be up close to the animals and the owners were very friendly and knowledgeable. We managed to hold a bearded dragon and have a cuddle with a tortoise. We also particularly liked the smiley fish and the octopus who came out to say hello. A lovely trip for an hour or so! Make sure you have your mask 😊

Lovely little place to visit whilst in Crete.
The 2 men in the garden area were fantastic, letting the children hold snakes and bearded dragons. Amazing experience they loved it.
