- AgrimaJaipur, India10 contributionsAn art village like no other!♥️We had gone to record a documentary there and it is worth visiting if you are in Odisha! It is a treasure trove of artists and developed as India’s first artist village. You’ll find beautiful paintings, stone works, ganjifa carfs and many other trinkets!Visited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 20, 2023
- Gp Capt R K DKolkata (Calcutta), India2,126 contributionsEye openerRaghurajpur Artist Village is a heritage village about 20 minutes drive from Pipli. The village is renowned for its unique Pattachitra art, a traditional style of painting that involves intricate detailing, vibrant colors, and mythological narratives. The Pattachitra art form primarily depicts stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. The artists use natural dyes and pigments to create these exquisite paintings on pieces of cloth, known as 'Patta' in the local language.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 14, 2023
- Rajesh WBengaluru, India36 contributionsfantastic experienceThis place is all about patachitra paintings. Never ever i was involved in such kind of visit , this is the first time that i visited an arts village and it was truly a fantastic experience. the village is nestled in small village and is near to Bhubaneshwar. if you visit Puri then this is on the way to Puri from Bhubaneshwar. we took cab to visit this place and cab driver was having contacts in that villages so they directly came to us on arriving to the village and took us to their own workshop/shop. they showed us all the collections which costed from 30 /- rs to 1,50,000/- rs. most of the paintings are on Lord Krishna and few on Lord Sriram, Ganesha, Jaganath. we loved every paintings they showed and were tempted to buy and indeed spent 16k to buy single painting as a souvenir. i only visited one shop and never felt i should visit another neighbor or shop for better bargaining or paintings. This is a must visit place for tourists.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 13, 2024
- Dream25358478227Chennai (Madras), India1 contributionSpell bound !A small village, Narrow lanes, Simple houses. From a distance it appeared like any village of East India. Lush green foliage and many small water bodies! We entered only one home. Spell bound and mesmerized with the creativity of natural colors on cotton cloth bound with local material to become the base : canvas, and on it our religious figures and stories so beautifully painted. Each work had detailing, intricacies captured leaving us spell bound. A great salute, to the tradition and legacy, the artistic and creative skills !Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 27, 2024

The village, near to Puri is famous for Pattachitra Paininting.Patta means a piece of cloth, which is basically dried palm leaves and painting of god goddess made over them. The pattachitra here is cheap compare to the same sold outside and you also have variety to choose from. You may visit this place if you want to see or buy pattachitra, otherwise the village doesn’t have anything to see.

This is one of the best kept secrets of Odisha. This is a small village near to Puri. We went here by our rented car. Road condition is ok. I personally visited 3/4 houses of artists and they showed me their piece of work. One of them Mr. Balkrishna Senapati did show us how they paint on talpata. My daughter tried her hands too. All the painting are based on stories of sri krishna mostly. They never pushed us to buy anything but in the end we ended up buying many painting for gifting purpose.

We planned a visit on our return from Puri to Bhubaneshwar Airport. We budgeted about 1 hour but it needs a minimum of half a day to do justice. Each house in the village is an artist's exhibition. Unfortunately one cannot visit all and purchase from them!
They need better publicity and support in organizing exhibitions in major cities across India.

A different experience in the routine sightseeing around Puri. One would love the variety of art & craft things that are made & being sold in the village. Many things of different price range is available. Was mesmerized by the intricate details of the paintings.

This place is about 18 km from Puri. I took an Uber cab from my resort and returned by an auto. There are about 140 houses in the village and all of them are engaged in art and craft work with the skill passed on over several generations. There are also quite a few padma bhushan awardees in the village. Unfortunately not much of support from the local government. Nice place to know the history and heritage. One can also pick up pieces of art that suits one's taste and pocket.

We were told by our relatives before start of the trip to Puri that we should visit this village also.
To be honest, I was floored by the quality of paintings, so minute and in details, so nicely color matching. It is a MUST visit.
Paintings were very similar to Madhubani paintings, but of a higher grade on canvases, produced out of worn saris mixed with chemicals or on the folded palm leaves.

Pattachitra is a general term for traditional, cloth-based scroll painting of Odisha and Raghurajpur is home to it. A small village 15 0 20 kms out of Puri, coming to limelight for is Pattachitras. Traditional families hereditarily engaged in painting intricate details as well as mythological narratives and folktales in cloth scrolls. A value for the money for Art lovers.

Can you confirm the price of these paintings?
Written March 3, 2020
Painting is an art. How you look at it, and like it, will be base for price. Ask the Shop owner price if interested in buying and start negotiations from 25/30% of quote and amicably reach to price acceptable to both.

Hi, I am also looking at going and learning art and spending some time there. Would you by any chance know who to contact regarding this? Do the villagers take on students to learn from? Where did the foreigner that you interacted with, stay? Any guidance would be greatly helpful to start looking!

Well if you are that keen... arrange your stay at puri (which is a nearby town). Visit this place couple of times (don’t say anyone your purpose of visit) and see where things lead. In the entrance of the village you will see some of the shops... don’t stop their... go little further to the heart of the village... their you will see people working on their art in every house.. talk to them in their house... and you may find some luck... also check out Shantiniketan, visva Bharti university specially for fine arts , in West Bengal

can you suggest some offbeat places to visit near bhubneshwere and Cuttak.
Written January 2, 2017
Certainly there are plenty of options lying between Bhubaneswar and cuttak, but all offbeat places have become tourist attraction by now! Hats off to our poulation outburst...Still you may try staying at Konark beachside instead of Puri or other popular beaches where you can get some kind of "off beat" feelings. Bhitarkanika National park and Chandipur near Balasore may also be visited for the same reason. Always Keep in mind offbeat places comes with serenity and risks as well. Please do calculate all aspects before hand. All facilities may not be available on so called offbeat places.

If you ever make visit to these places you may collect one of them as a memento else variety of similar artifacts and artist village are available in other places as well.
