- Abhik RoyBhubaneswar, India9 contributionsOne day in chilkaIf you find to see the chilka lake's review then you see many of bad and good reviews First of all the perfect time to visit this place is winter At that time You get to see the migratory birds, Dolphins and a few Islands and the sunset is really breathtaking.. This isn't all about Chilika... Do visit the Kalijai Temple... If you love Sea food this is the place for you. There's this "Chilika Dhaba". But that also some good and bad reviews, that's why I try my food to OTDC PANTHANIVAS Restaurant. They serve really nice food and The Crab curry is definitely a must try.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 10, 2023
- Rishi SNew Delhi, India17 contributionsChilika to chillYou will for sure go here if you are in Puri. Be aware from crooks, they will ask 5k-6k for single boat if you with private taxi. Make sure to go for Satpada boating association location, they offer almost half rate for same. Dolphin view is good, rest all like red crab island, etc all are over hypedVisited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 1, 2024
- Excursion604483424271 contributionChilka lake visitWe visited Chilka lake on 9th Jan. To our surprise the ticket counter at Satpada did not share any rate card and was giving only one option of Rs. 5200. There was no rate board. The Gentleman at the counter was very rude. The rate card as available in OTDC website carries no value. Otherwise the visit was beautiful. It is worth visiting. Early morning is best time. Beautiful birds around the boat keeps time clicking very fast.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 15, 2024
- Mobile569615681041 contributionScam of real Pearl and precious stonesWhile on boat ride, they stop in places where there are people who show Pearl from shell and stones from coral reeds. Literally break open shell and act as if you are lucky to see Pearl in it. Asking price starts from 2500rs. Please, please don’t fall in this trap. If you don’t have cash they give someone’s # for gpay. They are manually inserted artificial pearls (15-20rs) and sealed with fevicol so that they break open in our presence. DO NOT BUY THESE. Don’t know why government is not doing anything to stop this scam. We booked boat without stop in red crab, still the boatman’s first stop was the above stop ! Do they have a connection with this?…Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 15, 2024
- Daydream5265156940215 contributionsBoat ride was good but be cautious about sellers along the ride.We visited on 16.02.2024. The boat ride costing ₹4300/- for 3 hours was very good. The sight of floating birds on water was splendid. Instead of showing us red crabs in their habitat, they took us to a small island and showed us 4 crabs in a plastic basin filled with sand. Then they broke open many oysters and in few weeks saw pearls. Their main aim is to make money by selling these so called natural pearls... visitors be cautious. Also, they broke some thing else and said that they were gem stones. We could see only 2 dolphins as against the advertised several dolphins.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 19, 2024

After an evening darshan in Puri temple, we visited in Puri golden beach ,which walkable distance from hotel, on next day early morning visited Chandrabhaga beach for a sun rise, followed by the nearest monument of Konark Sun temple. next destination was the Chilka lake, took online booking in Dolphin Motor boat association for a 1 hr rid, and lunch thereafter. (Check more option for 1,2,3, or 6 hr ride for nature lovers and having plenty of time) nearby museum and beach are nice place to relax back to hotel. n next day again visited the Puri Jagannatha temple and back to Bhubaneshwar for return flight.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 2, 2024
- shrikant_ensoPune, India111 contributionsChika Lake Boat ride to see Sea Gulls & Dolphins.. Not worth the effortsFrom Puri to Chilka, you have to travel about 50 Kms. Once yu reach Satpada, you have to negotiate for a Boat, which takes you in the lake for sighting of Dolphins and Sea Birds watching. Yes, if you have never seen a Dolphin, it's worth, but other wise, please take care of the negotiations at the boat operators at Chilka. The trip is worth as a boat ride, but near around satpada there are no good restaurants. We were lucky to see couple of Dolphins though and it was pleasant, but the efforts and expenses may not be worth.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 6, 2024
- Nitin GaonkarMumbai, India81 contributionsChilika Lake - Jewel near the Orissa oceanMindboggling water body !! It is HUGH... yes capital HUGH size. A waterbody with many islands, boats ferrying across, some boats simply strolling around - showing magnificent dolphins, red crabs et al around the Chilika Lake. For records - it is largest brackish water lagoon in Asia, spanning more than 1100 sq km area. The boat ride is bit costly but one can enjoy the breeze while boating, experience the unending waves, look at the local ferry services - taking people and bikes from one place to other et al. It's an enjoyable experience worth the time spent there.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 10, 2024

During our visit to Puri in Orissa in December 2019 we also visited Chilka the largest sweet water lake. It is an isolated area and visitors usually visit the lake to see the sweet water Dolfins.
We were lucky enough to have a few glimpses of the rare animals but most of the time tourists have to return without sighting them.
There are country boats and motor boats by which you can make the trip. If you are a family it is advisable to take a couple try boat. If you are a couple it is cheaper to go by seat sharing launch but it may require a lot of waiting.
You usually reach Chilka during late morning. There are a few restaurants at the departure area and it is advisable to place your order for launch before departing for the boat trip or you may find trouble finding launch after coming back from the trip.
Usually the boats halt at a small island where you can have fresh fresh water fish and crab preparations. Though these are small thatched huts you can safely have their foods. There is also a small Temple which you can visit.
Though visiting Chilka makes no sense except passing some time for people who have visited Bankoks marine park they would surely be disappointed.

We had taken the cruise hiring a boat with just our family. The cruise took almost 4 hours and covered sea mouth - the place where river meets the sea and dolphins. We could just see a glimpse of a single dolphin. It seems due to very large number of boats moving in the lake the dolphins have either migrated or vanished due to impact on their breeding area. The journey was good, one should carry some drinking water & snacks as its a long duration. The boat also took us to a place where we could see scorpions, pearl shells etc picked up by local fishermen from the lake. One should start the trip early in the morning, otherwise it becomes hot & windy in the afternoon.

Visited Chilka Lake. This is around an hour drive from Puri.
You will expect 3 things . Nice view of the Lake. Expecting boat ride to visit island , red crabs , dolphin and relishing sea food for lunch .
The lake view is nice. It is the largest lake in India. You will see lot of seabirds as well
What is disappointing is the boat ride. For 2 hours they will charge Rs 3500 for 3.5 hours its Rs 4600
This is way costly. You may see some
Dolphins and birds and a deserted island with beach.
If you wish to try sea food there is a dolphin restaurant which is very basic but the price is exotic. We tried crab, fish , rice and dal for 6 which costed us Rs 3100. Better option is to skip lunch at this place and go for lunch in Puri or come in the afternoon post lunch

Scam, Scam & Scam. Not worth it at all. Visit this lake if u have ample amount of time & money. We visited in the month of May, 2023 and they charged 3000/- after so much negotiation and guaranteed that u will definately see Dolphins & birds. But, in reality u will not see either of them. They will fool you after wasting your precious 4 hrs and when u will come back at the shore in the evening, nobody will be there in the office to complain because they knew that they have made false promises. Most interestingly, all the cab drivers are involved with them and will not reveal anything to any travellers. Besides, there is no fix charge. There is a group who paid just 350/- per head with the same package and when I requested them can I be a part of the group and will pay my share, the authorities will simple refuse to be a part of the group. So, be aware of such scams and spend your valuable time at some other places.

People asks extra money for life jacket which should have been included in the ticket itself. In island they will break shells and show moti and munga and moon stone coming out and will ask for huge money. Cheaper boats with bigger capacity is missing. You will end up paying 2150 for small boat.

We went to the Satpada side of the Chilika Lake. The lake itself is massive - resembles a Sea! We hired a boat @ Rs.1500 for a 1 hour ride on the Lake. The main attraction is the watch the Dolphins. We were lucky as we saw numerous Dolphins during our ride on the lake.
A unique experience indeed!!!

Driver has taken us to private office near Lake to book a boat , we were two , they asked us to pay Rs 5550/- , we asked them to adjust in a boat as were two persons , but refused , they were noting car number on slip , may be they are paying to driver also some commission.
We were fooled by person on island for pearl , monga , they demanded Rs 850 for pearl , but we paid Rs 200/- , still very expensive. It should not be more than Rs 80 /-
On the way , our car driver asked us to book lunch , but we denied. Saved us some money and time
Orissa Govt must look into it and take Chilka Lake operations into their control, otherwise , it is loot

We visited chilka lake on the 31st of December 2021 we visited and took a boat ride from garbakund ferry terminal you have to prebook your lunch at hotel LeePayal which is around hundred metres before the ferry terminal.we paid around rupees 3500 for a 4 hour trip .first you board the small noisy launch and it take you to an island of the ferry where a person will board your boat and will show you red crabs apparently this is the place where red crabs are found which they are not edible are used for research in Cancer drugs there is a scam going on here where the person will open up oysters and try to sell you prearl or moonstone however beware that though he may show that the pearl have come out of a fresh oysters these are not real pearls and this is a scam .afterwards they take you to the dolphin seeing point at satpada which is around an hour and half by boat ride the boat ride is pleasant especially in the early mornings and late evenings however the boat is noisy you will not see many birds in this part of the chilka lake .the ride concludes by by visiting an island of chilka lake where you can see the bay of Bengal on one side and chilka lake on the other I would like to specially mention hotel Lee Payal where we had our food we were presented with crabs a local fish called as Li Payal and prawns chingri malai everyone in our group agreed that this was probably the best prawns that they had ever tasted the gravy as well as the prawns were very very good the crab was also fresh and nicely prepared. as can be expected at any such place the food hygiene leaves a lot to be desired however if you can manage to ignore that you will be in for a sumptuous meal.

Chilika will give you the experience of being one with the nature. You will find hauntingly beautiful Islands through out the vast lake which is thronged by countless species of beautiful birds and is untouched by humans. If you're lucky you'll get a glimpse of the truly unique but shy Irrawaddy dolphins on your boat ride.To enjoy chilika in all it's glory go after the monsoon (during which most of the Islands are unaccessable) preferably between November and March.

We visited Chilika Lake during our Bhubaneswar and Puri tour. Chilika Lake is a bit far away from Puri and you need to have your own transport. We were promised lots of dolphins and flamingos to see when we left Mumbai but got Zero flamingos and 2 or 3 sightings of dolphins who run away because of the loud noise of so many diesel boats that swoop on them at the same time!
When you you go for your ride you will find some people trying to sell you pearls and other gems that they claim that they have got from the oysters found in sea. These pearls and gems are completely fake.
There are nice but small Dhabas just before the lake where you can pre-order seafood which they will catch and serve by the time you come back. The total lake ride is of 3 hours and almost leaves you with a headache because of the loud diesel boat noise all around!

I will be visiting Puri in Dec. The flight lands 9 PM at night on 06 Dec 21 and the return flight is on 09 Dec 21 9.:30 PM (effectively 72 hours between flights).
We have our accommodation booked in Victoria Club Hotel on Puri beach.
Please guide me and suggest a good itinerary that will cover Jagannath Temple, Konark Sun Temple, Raghurajpur Village, Sakshi Gopal Temple and Chilika Lake. Info regarding distance, time taken, places to eat and boat / entry fee etc will be highly appreciated. Please do also suggest if any other site is worth visiting and not mentioned in my plan.
We are planning to take a self drive car from the BBI airport and keep it for the full length of our stay until our return flight. Is it advisable and cheaper / sensible to do so?
Written September 5, 2021
Hey man, I would recommend to take a guide/driver with their car for a trip like this. They know the roads very well. Regarding the trip I think you will be all good in three days. Try to finish your day trips by early evening and relax the rest of the day. My suggestion is to finish the Jagannath temple on the second day morning. Sun temple can be done on the same day. For the chilka lake keep a separate day which is probably the last day of your trip. Not sure about ticket prices now but it won’t be that expensive. Hope this helps.

was life jacket compulsory in the boat, also do u have the contact details of the otdc puri, the no. i got after a lot of difficulty isn't working !
Written January 25, 2020
If you know swimming, than life jacket may not be necessary. Water level is around 1-4 mtr max. While starting of boat ride, you may wear it but once away from shore, you may remove it as it will be difficult to keep it for 4/5 hours. There are many private boat operators around Chilka Lake and their charges may be negotiated.

hi.. planning to visit chilika lake on jan 27 from puri. 4 adults and 1 infant. will leave puri at 11 am after morning darshan and breakfast, will it be a good time? what time will i be back? have government fixed otdc boating charges? how much should i pay and how much time should i spend boating?
Written January 5, 2020
Hi, as per Govt regulations, max 6 adults can ride in a boat (though the norm is blatantly flouted). Normally charge is ₹1700 per boat.
I would suggest that take a boat from Satpada as you can see confluence of marshy back water from Bay of Bengal & Mahanadi river. It is at this point where max number of Dolphins can also be seen.
Don’t miss out visiting Ocean side beach - make it a pre condition with boat guy. The excursion takes 3-4 hours per ride.
Enjoy !
