A pretty unique experience of visiting a sacred forest
There are 100 plus sacred forests in Meghalaya but tourists are allowed to visit this one along with local guided tour only. Every kingdom is supposed to have one sacred forest. It is not allowed to bring anything back from here as it could have dire consequences (health issues, haunting of spirits). This forest is residence of local deity Labasa. Local people do perform rituals and sacrifices here on a periodic basis for the wellness of tribe. The guided tour was pretty great.

Experience the sacred forest with BAN
The forest is one of the most sacred places we visited, the history it holds is just unimaginable. The forest has its own eco system and is respected by everyone who lives around the place. It is believed that anything you take out of the forest is considered to be a bad omen, the forest has many fruit trees with one of the biggest pine tree I’ve ever seen. The forest has one of a kind Rudraksha tree in it, making it divine and calming in nature. The forest has three openings and we went to the second as it has a pathway made for us to use. The forest used to hold rituals to bring pace, wealth and family together, now they worship nature making Mawphlang even more beautiful. I can go on with the forest. But our tour guide can explain it better. If you ever visit Meghalaya do call Banshan - +91 883-7423443 he’s a tour guide, he helped us with our trip and everyone was explained by him. You can also connect on his Instagram page. @travel_with_the_buddies @persie_b_lyngdoh

Must visit if u visit Shillong
You can spend an entire day here. It's just beautiful. Visit the forest and spend time in the beautifully naturally landscape outside the forest. Words can't describe the lavish greeness of this place. Must visit.

This place is really sacred with variety of trees. This place looks like dense rain-forests with clear waters flowing. A lot mythical stories are there behind this place and our guide gave very nice explanation and made us trek through the dense woods. Nature lovers must visit this place and really interesting. At last this place really looks like Science Fiction world with dense forest landscape.

Mawplang is close to Shillong and we visited it on our way to Shillong from Cherrapunji. The forest is in the middle of open land space and the entrance is a tiny place. Taking a guide here is compulsory and we did the half trek. Very calm and peaceful place. You cannot take back anything from the forest even a leaf! If the forest deity appears as a leopard it is a good omen, bad omen if you see a snake. Animal sacrifices used to take place in the forest and the guide showed us the spots where the sacrifices took place. The guide was also an innovative photographer and took our pics using leaves and forest backgrounds very interestingly.
Out side the forest on the plains, a huge group of youngsters had come in cabs for a picnic. Loud Bollywood music playing and cooking at one side made for a fun image.

About an hour's drive southwest of Shillong, the Mawphlang Sacred Forest covers several 100 acres. We chose to do the short trek (all flat) with a guide (Rs.350) in the afternoon which lasted about 45 minutes. The guide explained the significance of the forest to the local culture and some of the rituals carried out. Interesting and worth the visit.

The forest is really sacred and it will show its true colors if you try to connect with it. Our visit was made special by Donkit, he is not just an amazing guide with a lot of knowledge and stories about the forest but he is a really nice and humble human being as well. In case you guys are planning to visit and have any queries, here's his number +91-6009644825, feel free to call. (Posting this number with his approval).
Sacred forest is a special place and I'll recommend it to nature lovers and not tourists who throw trash around. I was glad that we went there during the 11th hour of our trip but I'll definitely revisit it as the first place on the itinerary.
God bless.

Mawphlang sacred Forest is around 25-30 km away from Shillong. It is dense forest and used to by Tribal king for their prayers. Local do not allow us to pick up anything from forest and not to leave any trash in it.
You have to hire guide for trail. There are 2 types of Trails, short trail of 30 min will charge you 300 and Full trail of 60 min charge you 600.

This forest is nothing special from a tourist point of view.it is a nice ,quiet place. But you are quickly shown the place for sacrifice and 3 medicinal plants(the guide opened google and mouthed off the names and properties of the plants.) .
They charge you 350 rupees for the guide, and at the end still ask for donations in the name of maintenance of the forest!
Stay away from this tourist trap.

This is a must do! Most of iternaries miss this as it's an off route for typical tourist. I had read about so we decided to skip regular touristy places in shilloyand opt for small one hour trek at sacred forest. They assign a guide, who makes the trek even worthwhile by clicking lovely pictures and sharing stories associated to this place. This place makes you feel grounded, thankful and makes your heart boom with gratitude.

The Mawphlang sacred forest is a forest trail through dense trees which are considered sacred as the locals believe that a deity resides in the forest. There are two trek options - half trek and full trek where we decided to go for the half trek worth ₹350. You get a guide to take you through the forest who explains the trees and monoliths found all across the forest. Our guide Vackey gave a detailed tour and also took some great pictures for us. However there were also a lot of dogs in the area which spoilt the tour for us a bit.
