Since we were staying at Verandah in the forest, we visited the lake multiple times. One was on a Sunday when it was crowded even early in the morning and another time on a Monday which was much better with very few people.
The lake about 2-3 kms from the market is easily accessible either by walk, horse or hand rickshaw. On the way you can find few food stops to enjoy. You can sit & relax while at the lake. Also, see Sunset. A couple of points...More

Lot of cheating goes on in Matheran. When we had been there for the first time, we decided to see a lot of places. Basically there are plenty of view points which offer the views of the valley and surrounding mountains at different angles. the view points are all kinda similar and there are no striking differences. The best view point is called Louisa. Rest kinda sucks. So if you see Louisa you have seen it all. We hired two horses for the whole day and paid about 7k. Thats because we hired from the parking lot. Once you reach Matheran parking lot, don't negotiate with anyone. Get a ticket for the train that goes to the town. And hire a horse at the town market. That will be way cheaper. Still it depends on how many places you want to see. I suggest go to Louisa point and spend the entire day there. You will save a lot of money with that. The more you want to roam around, the more money you will have to shell out.
