June to August gets the highest rainfall around that area. There have been recent incidents of heavy rains and also landslides on the route between Virajpet and Madikeri so one must be careful with that. Safety at the trek yes, it is safe except for the rain. Have enough number of Male trekkers if you have female trekkers as well. If not, take a guide along who shows you all the points and if you're new to trekking.
We went without a guide as we've done several other treks. Best time to start your trek would be as early in the morning as possible. We started at 7am and were the only group in the entire forest and back by around 11am more than 30-40 people had started the trek.
I suggest you do a morning (half day) trek as camping isn't allowed. If the rain is too much, just head back (that's also what the forest official said at the entrance). Carry some eatables (bananas, biscuits, fruits, quick energy foods) and water. Whatever you carry, please don't litter, you can bring back your plastic wastes and water bottles. Safer if you don't carry too much money or expensive gadgets (because of the rain) and wear a raincoat to stay as dry as possible.
Good luck! Happy trekking :)
