The Jungle Cat cage is very small and the animals inside were pacing restlessly which made me a little sad. All of the other animals’ enclosures seemed adequate though. Not significantly smaller than enclosures at Zoos I’ve visited in the USA. The environment of the Zoo is very beautiful and the path through the exhibits meanders up and down big hills surrounded by forest. There is also a small one-room ecological museum near the entrance that is worth walking through before you leave. It has lots of taxidermy specimens including an enormous gharial. I had no idea gharials could be so large.

Assam zoo is in the heart of the city. If you are at Guwhati and need to spend about 4-5 hours , you are a naturalist trying to understand the endemic species. This is a protected area and good space - Green lung for a breath of fresh air. There is wonderful 2 km walk you can enjoy with leopards, cats, tiger, lion, Rhino , deers of various types. An Aviary and childrens park too for the excitement of young ones. A lovely musuem which preserves the extinct species too.

"Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden".
The entry fee per person is 30/- rs and it remains closed on Friday. Make sure you do not carry any eatables in your bags/purses as they will be taken out at the checking point. The zoo was very big but it was under construction so, many animals were not present in the cages. Undoubtedly there were a few animals which we saw for the first time and hence we were very excited. Golf cart is also available there but due to construction work, the cart was not operable. In the zoo, one has to walk and walk.
It took us 2 hrs to see the complete zoo.

The Zoo is spread over a huge area, so you don't get a strong feeling of animals in captivity. Some wild animals roam freely over the area. The Botanical Garden, if it existed, was well hidden, so I couldn't find the way there.

I had spent over an hour searching and navigating ways to peep at an wild animal. It was not easy. It is located on hillocks. Directions are not clearly given. But surrounding is natural. Children can find it amusing. But overall there is plenty of scope to improve it.

Go only if you have time to spare. The zoo is not very well maintained. Most of the enclosures, especially for the birds are small and it is sad to majestic birds like the Steppe Eagle and the Fishing owl, struggle in their confined space and that too having to share space with other birds.

It is a well kept and maintained zoo. the animals look well fed and healthy.
there is a walled enclosure with a bison, which must be more than 1 ton in weight.
the rhino is also a "must watch"
