Nice Wooden Covered Bridge in Pastoral Setting
Sep 2020
Ashtabula County, Ohio is in the very northeast corner of the state next to Pennsylvania along the Lake Erie shore. There isn't any one "great attraction" here, but it is a mostly rural area of small farms (including, about 150 years ago, that of some of my ancestors) and woods.

Ashtabula County boasts about 19 covered bridges spread around the county crossing various smaller rivers. They range in age from around the Civil War up to the present. You can find all kinds of maps on line to tour the bridges and they are also in various local publications such as tourist literature. Many combine them with trips to area inns or wineries or resorts such as at Geneva-on-the-Lake. There is also a "barn quilt" tour based on local designs on barns. The county is a good place for a weekend visit in late summer or fall.

The State Road bridge is one of the easternmost of the covered wooden bridges. It isn't quite on the state line, as one other review suggests, but about 5 miles to the east. It's only a couple of miles from I-90 and near several other covered bridges.

It is also one of the best bridges. It's about 150 feet long and was just built in 1983. You can drive across it and it's also relatively easy to get down to the Conneaut Creek it crosses for better views (plus to play in the water).

Among other very good bridges in the area are the Middle Bridge (about 5 miles away and similar, although without good river access), the red Netcher Bridge and, a little further, the very long bridge at Harpersfield. Further south is the Windsor Mills bridge, but there are obviously many others.

We toured several of these on a very nice afternoon in the late summer. It's a great excuse if you want a getaway weekend or just a nice one-day drive.

Spans 2 states

The State Road Covered Bridge is aptly names, since it spans 2 states: Ohio and Pennsylvania. There is a small parking area. Drive up the hill to get a different perspective

One of the More Impressive Covered Bridges
Aug 2018 • Solo
This 152ft (46m) Town lattice bridge, located on State Road 0.8 miles (1.3k) south of its juncture with South Ridge Road, is a relatively new bridge being built in 1983. This impressive span is located in a picturesque setting as it crosses the Conneaut Creek. There is a large pullout where one can park and get a good look and even take advantage of the access down to the creek’s bank where one can get a better perspective of this lengthy span.

My wife and I drove all over Conneaut and went though a bunch of covered bridges. It's not quite my thing but my wife loved them. Very Picturesque.

Hidden gem!
Jul 2016 • Family
Who knew Conneaut, OH has wooden covered bridges? That's right, not just this one at State Road, but there are two more not too far away; Middle Road and Root Road. With very little traffic, you can park your car nearby (Middle road actually has a parking lot) and walk on the bridge (just listen for oncoming traffic!)

My favorite covered bridge in Ashtabula County
Aug 2015 • Solo
While not as old as many, the State Road Covered Bridge was built in 1983 across Conneaut Creek. Spanning 152 feet it is impressive and very photogenic. I encourage you to take your shoes of and walk through the creek a bit to truly enjoy this beauty.
