This is a pretty park in the middle of the city. However, it is even more interesting if you view it in the context of the architecture and the City Beautiful movement. There are many cities that have sections of City Beautiful but few that have in this form, like a mini Washington DC Mall. In fact I don't know of another city that as closely replicates the DC as Cleveland.
Cleveland created its park and then lined it with great civic buildings, City Hall, County Courthouse, County School Board, Library, Auditorium and State Courts and did it in a Beaux-Arts neoclassical architectural style like DC. It is impressive and it will make you think of DC more than any other US city.
Today the park has been simplified, one fountain and then green space, and modernized, new modern high rise structures like the Key Tower and Hilton. It is a little easier today to see it as a great gathering space and open space in the city. However, it is more interesting to see it understanding what it really meant in terms of city building.

We happened upon The Mall somewhat by accident while exploring the northern part of downtown Cleveland on a recent visit to the city. We had just been through the two library buildings, and had exited to the north to take some photos from the huge open space we spotted while being up on the 10th floor of the Stokes Wing (i.e the new library building). That open space is known as The Mall.
There's a beautiful fountain at the south end of The Mall, more or less in front of the Key Center, and there's also an interesting statue of Lincoln just west of the old Public Auditorium (part of the Cleveland Convention Center) which is currently undergoing quite a bit of exterior restoration. There are also a few pieces of public art in the park, but what was most attractive to us was the sheer size of the open space. It feels good just to be here.
It was sunny and a bit on the warm side when we visited but there was a nice breeze coming in off the nearby lake. Here and there we could see families and couples and singles on the grass, just enjoying being out on a beautiful summer's day. I appreciate a park with a lot of tree cover as much as anybody, but I also enjoy large open spaces like The Mall.
If you're a photographer, The Mall is also a great place to take shots of the neighboring buildings and architecture because the park's openness allows you to get some perspective. While we were there, a local Cleveland resident saw us taking pictures of the surrounding buildings. That led to a conversation where he suggested we go take in the Old Courthouse, which turned out to be a good tip (http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g50207-d8494372-r295090288-Cuyahoga_County_Courthouse-Cleveland_Ohio.html)
It's our understanding that The Mall has been the subject of numerous improvements, many of them recent. Further improvements and enhancements are also in the works in accordance with the city's attempt at a modern day revival of the Group Plan of 1903. Realization of that vision is not yet complete, and perhaps that helps explain The Mall's relative lack of notoriety as a current tourist attraction. If you're a park person, whether you're a new visitor to the city or you live in Cleveland and haven't been here lately, you should check it out.

This large open space offers great views of Lake Erie, and is the site of many events and celebrations in Cleveland.
Also, like the National Mall in Washington, it is flanked by the city's great civic buildings and provides great perspectives of the city's skyscrapers.
Divided into three sections, the most southern part of the mall also contains the large Fountain of Eternal Life, or Peace Arising from the Flames of War, which honors Greater Clevelanders who served, died, or were declared missing in war, especially built to commemorate service in World War II and the Korean War but since encompassing all American military actions since 1899 inclusive of the Spanish-American War.
The centerpiece of the fountain is a 35-foot figure representing man escaping from the flames of war and reaching skyward for eternal peace.
Bronze plates on the granite rim surrounding the fountain contain the names of 5,552 Greater Clevelanders who fell in service from 1899 to 2014.
The fountain is especially beautiful to visit after dark.
As the Mall is adjacent to the Cleveland Convention Center, it's a great place to get some air and take a break from activities.

I was staying at the Hampton Inn and walked here to get some steps in and to get outside. It's beautiful here. There are plenty of benches and if you walk to the top of the Mall there is a great view of the water and the city. It was a nice sunny day and this place really brightened my day. This would be a great place to have a picnic lunch. Great place to take photos of landmarks as well.

I was blown away seeing so many beautiful buildings and statues in downtown Cleveland. And the nighttime views of this very clean and welcoming city are wonderful!

We stayed at the Drury Plaza and were anxious to stretch our legs after a long drive. Didn't think we had much hope at a downtown hotel. We were wrong. Gorgeous fountain just outside our hotel and that led to the Mall. It was a large, perfectly maintained grassy area where kids could run and play.Walk to the top and look down and there was an urban farm with pigs, chickens, honeybees... Very cool.
The Mall was a pleasant surprise. More to love about Cleveland!

Cleveland is getting better little by little. Does our waterfront compare to Chicago's? No, but this place is a start. It's a well kept area that has great views of the lake and the Browns stadium to the north and has a awesome fountain tonthe south. You can walk to the free stamp from here too.

Lovely space.. just still a bit cold this early in April. Will return when the fountain is on and spring has truly sprung.

We walked around this area many times during a recent visit to Cleveland. The Cleveland Mall is a long public park in downtown Cleveland and one of the most complete examples of City Beautiful design in the United States. When people first hear of Cleveland’s Mall, they think of a retail shopping mall. While Cleveland does have retail shopping downtown, The Mall is the downtown public park. It was created as part of the “City Beautiful” movement, which, in the late 1800s and early 1900s,

This is one of the centers downtown, especially for the convention crowd or people going to a concert. A lovely big green space in the summer, windswept in the winter.
