My family did the Black Hand Society game and we were disappointed in our experience. We have done The Missing Detective's Office, The Moonlight Gallery, and The Bootlegger's Lair in the past and were happy with those so we were expecting a similar experience with this room. It was a big letdown. If you go - try one of the other rooms - this one is not worth it!

Without giving too much away, the clues did not make sense to link to certain locks and one thing that needed done there was no clue at all for. It was frustrating. When we did meet the objective (which was not clear at all) they came in to tell us that we won and we were all confused and had no idea what we did to "win." We felt like this game is not ready & needs some work.

Overall, our family left feeling disappointed and like we wasted $100. We have done a lot of Escape Rooms in the past so we are not new to this. This is the first time I've taken the time to write a negative review, though, as we were so let down by this one.

I am very sorry to learn of your experience with the Black Hand and for my late response to your review (I didn't see an alert - my apologies). The game itself is designed to allow the progress, and audio cues from Chief Wise, to alert participants about what's in the room. (I don't wish to provide a spoiler here.) Would you be willing to reach out to me so I can get more details, please? If there are things that need corrected, then we want to do that. Our email is escaperoomdowntown@gmail.com, and our phone is (330) 844-1492. I hope you do. :) Sincerely, Chuck, Owner Escape Room Downtown

This was my wife and I first time any of us tried an escape room. We did the Edison Lost Invention room.We really didn’t know what to expect. We did not escape but had a lot of fun trying. We had Kelly in our room and she helped us when we asked for it and made the experience more enjoyable. Don't wait to long before asking for help.

Thank you for your review, Douglas, and for coming to play! We’re glad to know you had a fun experience with us and Edison’s Lost Invention. It’s a challenging game with a surprise ending as you know. Kelli is a super person, very helpful and kind - thank you for mentioning her. And you provided a great tip for others: do not be too hesitant to ask for hints if needed! Hope to see you back - cheers!

Three of us had the Moonlight Gallery room to ourselves. Task- It's 3am and mob boss asks you to pull a heist collecting gemstones in a private art gallery. Using flashlights we set out. The clues were challenging and made you think. Each of us contributed something to help solve it just under the allotted time. Lots of laughs after.
Nerve racking and fun at the same time!
Love the uniqueness as the owners write the scenarios themselves tying in history of the area. Ashley was wonderful!
Cant wait to try another room!

This was my 4th escape room. While most I have done had obvious puzzles and locks and putting them together, this setting was different making it more challenging. Group had a great time in the Missing Dective, but personally I prefer the other style. Beyond that, the person working the desk was quick with the hints when we needed them. The reason for the lower rating was for the style, the clues we kept solving seem to keep pointing back to things we already solved. Other rooms I've done give you an hour, where this was 45 minutes. And the equipment we needed made it more challenging as they were not the best quality. So once we opted to adapt from the items it moved a bit faster.
Also our other group was in the Bootlegger room, they said the person who walked them down did not seem to explain that they could ask for clues leaving many first time players scratching their heads when they were stuck wondering around the room. But again, overall the group had a great time, I just personally don't believe I will be going back.

Thank you for your review and for coming to play! What you describe with other escape rooms is definitely a style difference, what we could call a “linear” style of puzzling. (Unlock one lock, then move to the next lock, etc.) While many escape rooms use linear puzzling, we prefer a more immersive experience that requires participants to work on different puzzles at the same time. It does produce a bit of what I would describe as “planned chaos” at times that requires the team to have a plan on how to work together. The advantage? Everyone gets involved, the game doesn’t get stalled and the scenario feels more like real life. In other words, we feel there needs to be a reason that something is locked or hidden; people in real life do not have a series of locks that, if you unlock one, you can get to the next one and so forth. Linear puzzling is actually a much easier game design and that is why we see it used more in the escape room industry. That said, I appreciate that not everyone will agree on what the best puzzling style may be as it relates to puzzle flow. And everyone has different likes and dislikes. That’s the way it should be! Yes - 3 out of 4 games are 45 minute games, with one game being a 60 minute game. The 45 minute games work well, we feel, as guests are with us about an hour in total from arrival to finish. This also allows us to keep our costs down for our guests, especially first timers who have never played before. Regarding the group not being told they could ask for hints, and that they were left wandering around, that is not the norm and something that will be addressed with our staff. We work hard to provide a fun experience for guests, so I am stymied and disappointed to learn that this could have happened. Hope to see you back to try a different game. All of our games have some very unique puzzling and experiences; none of them have been copied from other escape rooms. (We were one of the first in the area, having opened in 2015.) Cheers!

We did the Bootlegger escape room. There was 7 of us in total. We all had a blast. Well crafted room by the creator. Lots of fun, challenging! We didn't quite make it through in the hour. But I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a great afternoon activity! Can't wait to come back and try the other rooms.

Thank you very much for your review and playing the Bootleggers Lair. Traveler, we really appreciate that you took time to recognize the goodness of this game and share your experience for other future guests to read; and we look forward to having you back soon to have another go! The Bootlegger’s Lair is our best kept secret (unfortunately), so I appreciate that you recognized that the game/gameplay had a lot of love and hard work put into its creation. (Readers of this: I wrote in detail to a review from July 30th, my previous response, about how we crafted this escape room. You may want to read it if interested in learning more.) Cheers!! 🕵🏻‍♂️

My family did The Bootleggers Lair, and were SO impressed. It is smart, clever, tricky, challenging, but most of all, so, so fun!

There were only three of us, and we were warned when booking that that would make it more challenging. It did, so that would be my one bit of advice - have a bigger group, and make sure you communicate well.

Our daughter has done The Missing Detective; we'll be back someday for the Moonlight Gallery. Thanks for creating such a great space!!

Thank you for coming to play and for your review! I'm very glad you shared some of your experience and takeaways about "the Lair." It is challenging, yes; but it is super fun and a BIG game, right? :) The Bootlegger's Lair is possibly one of the best escape rooms in Northeast Ohio (maybe the state?), as it was very well thought out and executed. NOTE: This is an escape room that all escape room enthusiasts need to play <----- :) I've written about this before, but it is worth reminding would-be guests that this took us 7 months to build after months of planning. We brought in a well-seasoned escape room player and game aficionado who, at that time, had played 40+ escape rooms in the United States and abroad (20+ in Europe). (For those who do not know, Europe had escape rooms before the U.S., so they had a head start on good game development.) Needless to say, that our plan was polished, improved, perfected for some serious game play! The puzzling is fun - without gaps in logic or excessive red herrings. This game is an exploration that opens up into an adventure of "what will I uncover next?" Because it is set in 1925, and wanting to stay somewhat true to that time period, we designed and built some surprises into the game that could have been created with the technology of that era. I should also note that the Bootlegger's Lair is not scary or confining. It's a bigger space, as escape rooms go, and a puzzling challenge to beat the clock before 60 minutes expires. But even if guests do not beat this game, they will talk about it, enjoy the experience and possibly come back for a do-over (we've had many teams take it on, again). Cheers!
