While searching for some things to do on the way to the cemetery in Morne à l'Eau, I came across the mangrove museum on the map and thought, why not? I had heard that Guadeloupe has some good examples of mangroves in the Caribbean, so the Tall Man and I took a little detour to find out, despite some negative reviews on TripAdvisor (in French).

You can find Taonaba on Google Maps, and it's best to do so because there is very little signage to get you there. After turning off of D106 (and not far off the N5), you're basically driving through semi-industrial, then semi-agrarian land on a narrow track.

But once there, we sadly discovered it was closed due to damage from Hurricane Maria (sign in French). Still, we left the car outside and walked around the gate to see what we could see. There is a rather nice looking museum building, although it looks like it is still under construction, as other reviewers alluded to. The elevated boardwalk was abruptly blocked off before some broken sections, which forced us to turn back after a very short walk.

The landscape is quite pretty, though, marshy with mangroves seen in the distance. Wandering cows seem to at least be able to enjoy the landscape. It would be nice to return once things have been cleaned up and fully finished, as the boardwalks seem to give an enticing view into the mangroves around the eastern side of the natural reserve lagoon.

We were the first at the TAONABA Maison de la mangrove. We read all the pamphlets and we went to admire the mangrove.

We could walk anywhere n the boardwalks.

Those mangroves were beautiful.

At times we could see water.

We enjoyed exploring the mangrove. Wow!

Worthwhile to see!
