There is a useful brochure online if you intend to hike, which would be the primary reason for a visit. There are two trails, Red and Blue. The Blue trail if off the parking lot, the Red trail is across the gravel drive from the parking lot. I started off on the Red trail hoping to see the oldest growth, etc. but found it to be a little too steep due to the recent rain for me to brave with my dogs alone. I hiked about half of the blue trail before the sun went down. They are not loops, but loop back to the gravel drive that you come in on. The property is beautiful and it was quite peaceful. I would like to return.

This trail system has great potential in a beautiful area. But…it is a mess!
Ohio University neglected this designated National Landmark allowing trails, signage, and creek crossings to collapse. In December of 2022 the university “sold” various portions of the property with the bulk of the old growth and second growth forest being “purchased” by another conservancy using grant money.
It was disappointing to see first hand that the University had allowed this property to decline.
So, know before you go: This is a beautiful tract of land and the trail system has great potential. However, you will find brochures in circulation and online regarding the Red and Blue interpretive trails…there are zero interpretive markers. The sign at the entrance points to an old house directing you to the house for information…don’t bother. Both trails are littered by deadfall trees and both will require climbing, crawling, or otherwise detouring from the trail. All three of the bridges crossing creeks on both trails are unusable so I would not recommend after days of rain.
The trail IS well marked, if you detour just look around for another marker. Download the trail guide from All Trails for an added measure of safety. We did Blue then Red. We are fit seniors who hike 2-3 times per week.
Wear good hiking boots, carry trek poles, take your time, enjoy…now that you know…you won’t be disappointed.

We took the red trail. A lot of hills and rough terrain but well worth every step. The old, huge trees were a spectacular sight and we were so glad we visited Dysart Woods. See attached photos.
