While visiting Wahpeton I checked on the top 10 things to see. The Ringling Brothers Monument was listed. It is located in a cemetery on the outskirts of town. The monument is quite unique - worth the drive to go see it.

I was in town for other business, so I jumped at the opportunity to visit and pay my respects. The rating takes into account that it is not a general-interest attraction, but if you are in town, it is well worth a visit, especially if you are a history or circus buff.

The tripadvisor map location marker is currently a little misleading; the cemetery is located 1 mile south of the intersection of 11th Ave S. and Center St., located roughly between the river and the southeast corner of the airport. Just drive south on Center until you see a pair of brick pillars on the left, on either side of a dirt driveway. The monument in the middle of the cemetery. The cemetary is well-tended, taken care of by the local VFW and cemetery neighbors (thanks Greg!).

In addition to the two Ringling Bros. circus workers, Charles Smith and Charles Walters, killed in 1897 by a thunderstorm while setting up the main tent (see the associated attraction website), there is a marker next to the monument for Herbert Joseph “Duke” Walker, a trumpet player for the Daily Brothers Circus, who died in 1948 of apparently natural causes while in Wahpeton.

You can google the story behind this memorial. It’s very touching. Google address is slightly off, but you will find it. The pole is the highest stone in the cemetery. It’s a beautiful location. It made my heart happy to see how well the cemetery is kept up.

I thought there would be more to this monument(more explanation) There is no parking area that we were able to see in the winter when we visited.

The monument is quite old and has some decay. Better see it while it’s still around. The review from the British family mentions a house and exhibit. They must be talking about the county museum in Wahpeton. That is only open Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays. Alas, I was here on a Monday.

The Circus has been a mainstay in America ‘s great history. In my life time we have seen it evolve from the arrival of the Circus Train and the parade to the site of the Big Top to the amazing three rings of entertainment in the great Arenas across our land. This museum covers all of it and more. The trains, the tents, the entertainers, the lions, tigers and elephants are all in displays of what they where. A great place for grandparents to take their grandchildren

We visited this place today and toured the house, the gallery and the other exhibits.
They were all well presented and interesting.

This is a must see if you are in the area. Review the story online prior to visiting to help you understand why the monument is there. I have lived in the area for many years and just visited the monument this Spring.

I'm rating like I have because this really isn't for everyone. Actually just found out about this while having drinks downtown. Decided to stop by on my way back to Fargo.

If you are into circus' and history, this is a must stop for you. While there, walk around and check out some of the other headstones as well.
