Average trip. We arrived at approximately 4 pm and made our way towards the front entrance to buy tickets to the zoo. We were provided a map and started the loop around the zoo, viewing animals from all walks of life. There were informational plaques in front of each animal exhibit, which detailed the animals habitat, diet, reproduction, threats in society and occasionally a fun fact about the animal. I do wish the plaques contained a little more informative, and were not just in bullet point form. There were several areas around the zoo where one could buy food to feed the animals. There was also a petting portion of the zoo, where one could pet some horses and goats. The zoo was nicely laid out and very clean.
Tip: I recommend spending 2 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

Maybe it's because I'm older these days...but was kind of disappointed. Any water sources were pretty dirty looking and some displays were empty. I think it's a great zoo for teaching kids and entertaining them. I also felt that since this was such a big draw for Wahpeton that the signage getting to and into the park was kind of confusing. Maybe we went in the wrong way or something. The carousel was wonderful. I could have just been expecting too much because of the TV ads I've seen.

We took some of our grandkids to the Zoo and Carousel. The kids loved it - seeing the animals, being able to pet the turtles, donkeys and goats. A highlight was feeding the ducks and chickens. The peacocks were in full bloom! The rhinos and other animals were a treat also. So much to see. Impressed with the quality of the zoo in such a small town.

Chahinkapa zoo and park is a great little small town zoo. It is the biggest zoo around for several hours going any which way. Definitely worth a stop to spend a day! Love the addition of the orangatun, my daughter's favorite!

Wow! This was a pleasant surprise! I have been to about 90 zoos / aquariums around the world. This is a wonderful little zoo! Extremely impressive animals for its size.....Plains Zebras, Southern White Rhinoceros, Bornean-Sumatran Orangutan, Cheetah, Fossa, Snow Leopard, North American River Otters, Eagles, Camels, Alpacas, Llamas, Bobcats, Cougar/Mountain Lions, Kangaroos, Lemurs, Spider Monkeys, White-handed Gibbons, Elk, Bison, etc.
It was a beautiful warm and sunny day. There were hardly any guests, so it was the perfect day for a quiet stroll. The animals were all active and the walking paths take you pretty close to their cages, exhibits, and habitats.
The admission with AAA discount was $10.25.
I HIGHLY recommend a visit to this zoo if your travels ever bring you to this part of North Dakota!

I come from Columbus, Ohio where we have a great zoo headed by the world famous Jack Hanna. This zoo is much smaller, but it puts one closer to the animals which gave it a very personal experience. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, the cages within reach of the walkways put you right up front with the animals, signage gave interesting facts on each animal, and the animals here just seemed to be more comfortable than at other zoos I've been to. If you're in our near Wahpeton, I'd suggest planning to visit this zoo. You will not regret it.

This is a gem of a small zoo to visit. You can get up close and see the great selection of animals at this zoo. It's too bad it is a bit off the beaten path because it offers great entertainment. A "must see" when close to the area.

We did the behind the scenes tour with director and curator and it was absolutely awesome. We have done behind the scenes activities at a half dozen or so world renowned zoos and this one was not only better but also better priced. I would hands down recommend it, in fact I think I’ll do it again.

This zoo is so fun for little one. We have taken our grandchildren there many times. It is small enough to allow the little ones a little freedom to explore. Great family time.

The enclosures were small, even though there is ample room for them to be expanded. The water supplied to the animals is gross and not changed out often at all. Most of the water containers are rusted and just smell so nasty.
The animal pens are filled with the animals feces. They don't appear to be cleaned out often at all. Even the fish containers are terrible, the filters are so clogged with dirt and grime that they have dustballs forming around the filter.

Yes, it is quiet for the most part and the camping area is within walking distance to the golf club which serves food. They have small cabins to rent there but not sure on the cost. There is also room or campers and tents.
