Great museum

The museum is entered through the tourist information centre. The cost was $7 each and it was well worth it. I particularly loved the domestic type displays, with old laundry appliances, coal irons wash boards etc. there are a number of sheds that cover farming, logging, wagons you name it. Was very impressed, the volunteers have done a wonderful job.

Brilliantly Presented Localised History

Originally inhabited by the indigenous Ramindjeri people, with coastal areas colonised in the late 1830s and the actual town established in 1839, Yankalilla has a rich heritage which is celebrated in the Yankalilla District Historical Museum.

Situated behind and entered through the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre, the museum has a reasonable entrance fee and you are able to wander through the many displays of local history that reflect the rural and social life of the area. It also takes into account nearby towns including Myponga, Normanville, Inman Valley and Rapid Bay.

There are several display areas all touching on some aspect of past lives. From health to communication, from daily chores like washing clothes to cheese manufacturing, from transport to tilling the soil plus more is covered in this carefully gathered and well displayed history.

I spent time looking at many items on display and recalling my grandparents, who did live in the area, having the item or something similar. I did marvel at the Hip Bath but realised what a wonderful water conservation item that would be and also wondered how aged pioneers managed to use them! The early sewing machines with which, no doubt, many ladies of the land made clothes or repaired them when needed. The old buggies, certainly a long way back in comparison to today’s transport methods … and perhaps reminding us exactly how fortunate we are.

The museum is full of interest and like the many similar museums scattered throughout rural Australia speaks of the dedication of locals to preserve their history and heritage. Thank you to the Yankalilla folk who have done a great job in putting together and maintaining a superb museum.

Return? Would love to … just have make an excuse to go down to the area again.

This place doesn't look much from the outside, but it has a huge museum range. It is very clean and reasonably priced especially for families. We had a lovely afternoon walking in yesteryear and the kids learnt a lot as well. They were amazed at the teacher's rules. We went on a very warm afternoon, there was plenty of shade to comfortably walk around.

Fantastic Museum. Well worth the visit, especially as it is so cheap to visit. Gives a good look at the early years of this area. Well laid out and easy to access.

Please visit when in the Yankalilla / Normanville area, it is so worth spending an hour or two here. Well done to the local historical society, and the Visitor Information Centre for having it open on a daily basis.
