About
Murray River Trails is the first operator of guided multi-day walking and cruising ecotourism experiences on an Australian river. Its experience portfolio comprises of ‘Murray River Walk’, ‘Murray River Safari, and ‘Murray River Escapes’. Experiences depart from the historic South Australian town of Renmark, the majority taking place during a ‘touring season’ which spans between March and November. Guests can complete up to 14 km of walking a day, paddling, cruising, and a range of other activities and experiences. Each day, houseboat accommodation cruises to a wonderous new destination, setting the perfect pace and places to discover the magic of the mighty Murray River. Our tours operate in a high value natural area of the Murray River, within the Riverland Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, which is home to diverse wildlife (including 180 endemic bird species), ancient forests, meandering waterways, ephemeral lakes, and majestic cliffs.

Such a stunning part of the world and the trip was superb! From first contact to the fond farewells everything had been thought of, planned in detail and delivered with professionalism, friendliness and enthusiasm.
The houseboat design is amazing - loads of space to spend with travellers, as well as plenty of space to get away and reflect.
Catering provided plentiful, amazing food with dietary requests easily met.
But the very best part was walking through spectacular scenery hearing the stories - the guides were so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, and the indigenous and settlers' influence on the land - it brought the history of the area to life.
Definitely recommend this trip, worth every cent.

Our group of 10 friends and family embarked on a Murray River Walk in July.

All I can say is I would give this walk and experience the highest rating possible.
Our guides, Drew, Jo and Cook extraordinaire, Sally, were absolutely fabulous. We were so impressed with Drew and Jo’s knowledge of the area and the indigenous history in a pair so young and Sally’s cooking skills and presentation of everything was second to none.

The walk was fabulous and a lot of fun with much learned along the way. The food and drink were restaurant quality down to every minor detail.

The houseboat accommodation was fantastic however I will say it will be even better when the custom built boat becomes part of the adventure. With everyone having their own en-suite, rather than sharing 2 bathrooms between 10 people.

Well done Murray River Trails you’ve definitely got everything right.

Thank you for an amazing experience.

Last week we were in the middle of your River Murray Trails experience. We returned home with beautiful memories of our time with you and have been delighted to share the highlights with our friends.

We thank you for your professionalism, Tony. Your passion for the river environment and your depth of knowledge was inspiring. We learned so many fascinating facts. We may not remember all the information, but we will certainly remember the experience.

The comfort of our ‘hotel’ houseboat was beyond expectations, with comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms in all bedrooms. Waking to the morning light from the floor-to-ceiling windows was a great way to welcome the new day.

The food preparations were such nice offerings, and we thank both of you for your efforts in creating such interesting dishes. The offer of lovely wines and drinks was also much appreciated. Lunch on the top deck on the last day was another of the many highlights.

The excursions in the “cruiser” were enjoyable. We had not previously experienced high flows in the Murray, so it was terrific to see it so “alive”, even though many people and businesses will suffer if they are flooded. To see the flood planes filled and to witness the majestic River Red Gums reflected in the still waters will be a lasting memory. The experience was amplified when paddling the kayaks along a creek. The closeness of the trees made it a more intimate experience.

Tony, we thank you and Sophie and wish you all the best as you continue offering this exceptional safari experience. We thought it was perfect in every way. We loved reacquainting ourselves with the Riverland birds again, and your in-depth knowledge was invaluable. It’s an experience that we will long remember.

Walking and house boating along the Murray is just magic! Wake up each morning to a beautiful river vista and a gourmet breakfast. The guides really know this iconic waterway, the environment and its cultural history. A confident and caring team look after everyone’s needs, every day is a delight and the dinners are unforgettable!!

The Murray River Trail was not quite what I was expecting but throughly enjoyed my experience the guides were great especially one whose passion for the area was shown with her knowledge of the area and I sure learnt lots about this area. The houseboat was great slept well the food sure was adequate and the local wines great. Would totally recommend doing this if you have thought about it and certainly with the Murray River Trails.

It was a wonderful experience all round and will be the highlight of this year for us! We can’t thank Tony and Sophie enough for all the thought and effort they put in to make our October safari special. We were a group of 4 and enjoyed the company of the 6 other guests on board. Plus we learnt a lot about the ecology of the river and surrounds; witnessed the high river in the process of replenishing the landscape; and observed birdlife flourishing in the conditions. But, sadly, this will be at a great cost to some of the communities along the river.
The accommodation was perfect, food and wine beautiful and the activities well organised, even though minor changes were needed to accommodate the high river. Pauline and Scott

A special time to visit the Murray River, so much to learn, listen to and watch as the river landscape flourishes with the higher flows. We are glad you chose to join us and it was a pleasure to share the journey with you. Thanks, Lauren

We are home again, but wanted to let you all know I haven't stopped smiling.

This was my 1st hike, 1st walk longer than a few hours over one day.

I loved it. I found it challenging at times, but it was all manageable. Magic country and I am so thrilled to have been there.

The team of guides were beyond wonderful if that is possible.
Can't thank Mick, Sofia and Cass enough for the best support.

Friends ask was it good? was it worth it?
Our answer is a resounding YES.

We filled in the feedback form, but I wanted to let you know this has been the holiday of a lifetime for me.We are home again, but wanted to let you all know I haven't stopped smiling.

This is one of the most enjoyable and wonderful walks to be had. Apart from the lovely walking and food and wine it was so informative about this whole area and the water system that provides for the food bowl of Australia. If you want to know how how we are fed while walking through a most enchanting area then get along to this walk. Could not be faulted

There are literally hundreds of guided walks in Australia and overseas. In the last twenty years we have done quite a few, but nothing like the walk organised by Murray River Trails. The walking pace is very gentle compared to many, as is the distance covered each day, and there are frequent stops to search for birds (we saw 70 species!), and for explanations on the plants and ecosystems.
Each night we slept comfortably on a houseboat with the added attraction of an en suite bathroom.
A big thank you to our most knowledgeable guides who left us with a much greater understanding of the Murray Darling basin, it’s history and importance.

Thanks so much for your fantastic review. We feel so lucky to operate in such a naturally beautiful landscape, we wouldn't be doing it justice to race through it. Glad you appreciated the stories and 70 species of birds along the way! Cheers
