About
"The Best Place to See Wild Koalas Up Close" Mikkira Station Koala Sanctuary is a (4th generation) privately owned property, 25 kms South of Port Lincoln, near the tip of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. In the cooler winter months you can visit for the day, or camp overnight in the large flat grass campground, surrounded by wild koalas, kangaroos, emus, parrots, the unspoilt nature Australian forest wildlife. 600 acres to walk and explore, discover the ruins from when it was a working sheep station in the 1840s and enjoy seeing how the surrounds are "re wilding" after decades of the land now set aside from agriculture and now a wild koala sanctuary. You will see more wild koalas here in the 100s of years old manna gum trees than anywhere else in Australia. There are also many other rare and some endangered species here of birds, animals, and flowers. There is a natural source of water on the property, so the huge campground area has also a toilet and shower block available.

The first day of the multi-day tour which I have booked with Explore Eyre we visited Mikkira Station. It is home to a colony of wild koalas that live in the manna gum trees. I have never seen so many Koalas in a short time and in the wild. The guide was very good and used to spot Koalas up in the trees and she knew where the favorite places are. We were lucky and could spot in total 19 Koalas. It was Amazing and unforgettable. It's also home of Kangaroos, Emus, sleepy lizards and other wildlife. It was definitely the highlight of the first day. Visiting is only possible by guided tours or with a permit.

A very relaxed and easy access attraction situated in the grounds of an old ranch. Although it is possible to visit independently, it's best to do as part of a tour. Camping is available and there are rudimentary facilities, but please check first as it is sometimes closed during high fire risk periods. I found it was easy to see wild koalas, but these animals are pretty chilled, so don't expect them to dance for you or anything. Kangaroos, wallabies and emus also frequent the station, but we only saw koalas on our very short visit.

Mikkira Station Reserve was a highlight of our visit to Port Lincoln. The station is on privately-owned property. The property is gated. Koalas are easy to spot in the abundant gum trees on the property. Caravan, motor home or tent camping is available with free parking. A must see/do.

This is a fascinating place. First there are koalas in the trees and some are close to the ground, so photogenic! Also there is the old homestead set out as the home of the family who lived there with artifacts and personal mementos. Camping and picnicing are allowed.

This place is a wonderful place to stay. Stayed in a swag on a clear night and can see the stars clearly. You can sleep under the trees where the koalas live. Only down side is there's one toilet and showers which are out dated but there clean. The owner is friendly and helpful.

Nice hot shower we had miles of space to ourselves, koalas in every tree, historical location and friendly hosts. Highly recommend checking out the water hole homestead and the old koala enclosure no longer in use.
