About
Hugh Hamilton and his daughter Mary are the 5th and 6th generation of the Australian Hamilton wine dynasty that stretches back over 180 years. Beginning in 1837, Hugh’s great great Grandfather Richard emigrated to the new colony of South Australia and planted Australia’s first wine grapes, unwittingly starting an industry that South Australia is now world famous for. Every element of this winery, from our Cellar Door experiences to our exciting Wine Club, the Black Sheep Club, is designed by the family themselves to be of an outstanding quality.

- Outstanding W43 contributionsWell done Will! This was our first visit to the Yurt in 22 years when it was VERY new. The views were spectacular then and seemed even better today. On our first visit we met Hugh and shared our love for outstanding wines and oysters. Today we met Will who accommodated our need to sit outside, poured some outstanding wines and gave us an experience rather than just a tasting. I was in the wine business for many years and have visited so many cellar doors around the world. Will is one of the best.Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this wonderful review of your visit. We were so pleased to hear you had a memorable tasting experience with Will, and appreciate the wonderful compliment on his service. We absolutely agree, Will really is a remarkable host with amazing knowledge and impeccable hosting skills. We are super lucky to have him as part of our incredible team here! - Shaun SBellingham, Washington7 contributionsSpectacular Wines and Great Guides!Alex and Christna (sp?) and Sabine were welcoming, very knowledgeable, and wonderful! The cellar door setting in the circular, windowed tasting room looking out on the vineyards (built over an old water tank!) is simply spectacular...the wines I tasted were all delicious...the drama queen sparkling wine, the nimble king cab, the lovely Jekyll and Hyde co-fermented blend of shiraz and Viognier!...beautiful reds in ancient earth, moocher mouvedre, and oddball saperovi, from the saperovi varietal that dates back to 6000BC (8000 years old-possibly the oldest known varietal on earth), from Georgia in Russia! So rich and complex. The wines are top shelf and the setting is gorgeous, and best of all, Alex, Christna, and Sabine made it a great afternoon.Hi Shaun, Wow, what an amazing review! We are very impressed with how much knowledge you retained on your visit here, it sounds like you had a wonderful time learning from Sabine, Alex & Chrisna whilst taking in the picturesque Cellar Door views and sipping on our delicious wines! We agree, they are warm and friendly hosts with incredible knowledge about the history and wines. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, we are incredibly grateful for your 5 star review. Writing a review now because we joined the wine club while we were there, we’ve had two deliveries and feel able to judge the quality of the whole experience now, looking back. It’s been excellent. In particular, HH produces full bodied, flavoursome red wines that standout. They are not cheap but they are great quality. Their venue is in a gorgeous setting and the staff made our tasting session a pleasure. Still loving the Oddball and the Black Bloods.Hi Rick, Thank you so much for taking the time to circle back on your experience and provide some wonderful feedback on the Cellar Door, the Black Sheep Wine Club and our wines! - dom v1 contributionGreat couple of hours at Hugh Hamilton WinesGreat service, great wines, lovely place to visit and try wines and chill. Service was very friendly, we chose the buy a bottle with platter experience, there was no heavy sell or obligation to sit down one on one to hear about 50 wines. Nothing was too much trouble. Bought 3 bottles in the end and had a splendid afternoon chilling in the beautiful surrounds. Definitely recommend and will drop in again.Hi Dom, Thank you so much for taking the time to share this lovely review of your visit! We were so glad you enjoyed your experience, and are very pleased to hear you're planning to return. We are so fortunate to be graced with a stunning view of the Vale, and it looks like you both were very happy with your wines, view and fodder plate. Cannot recommend this place high enough. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member who attended to us throughout our duration and was very informative about the wines and the region. Everything about this place is just stunning - the tasting room has 360 views of their vineyards and the wines are superb.

Gorgeous grounds, knowledgeable staff & lovely wines. You could lose a few hours here if you wanted to. Like most places they do charge a $10 fee tasting fee which is waived upon purchase of wine. Highly recommend

I have not been fortunate enough to visit, but I was so impressed with the service of the hamper delivery. I organised The Dark Arts Sampler pack to be sent as a birthday present. It was ordered 9pm Tuesday night and arrived in Adelaide Wednesday afternoon. I'm told that the sampler pack was beautifully presented with plenty of literature and great wine. Can't wait for the border to open so I can visit in person.

This is a great winery steeped in history with a fine selection of wines. We were served by Will and Noah - both exceptional with a fantastic knowledge of the winery and the origins of the Hamilton family’s wineries. An absolute delight and highly recommended.

We were looked after by Sabine who had a great knowledge of the wine and history of the winery. The setting is amazing sitting on a rise above the vines. First class wines with no pressure selling however the $10 tasting flight is waived if you do become a member. Put it on your list of wineries to visit. Regards Tash and Nic

Had a tasting yesterday at Hugh Hamilton and Alex (AB) and the team there were absolutely fantastic. They were very generous and incredibly accommodating especially being a bit of a larger group! Started off the tasting with a few of their cordial welcome drinks with fresh rosemary which was a big hit amongst everyone! AB's descriptions of the wines, history of Hugh Hamilton and general approach to the tasting made it really fun, interactive and interesting! Can not thank him and the whole team enough for such a great time!

The range of wines of top quality available from Hugh Hamilton Wines is just astonishing. It is well worth joining their club, and getting access to an eclectic, varying range of wines twice a year The site is spectacular, and raised, and looks out over the vines towards a number of other wineries. A really spectacular spot to visit.
