On a recent trip to Brachina Gorge we took the trail through both gorges, the changes in colour of the rock, the high gorge walls and trail is simly stunning. We took a medium sized SUV (RAV4) through the rough tracks without any issue, making this an accessible destination for most vehicles. We did notice a couple of normal sedans trying to do the trek, however I would not recommend this. If visiting the Flinders Ranges then a trip through Wilpena Pound and the gorge is a must.

We were fortunate to have stayed at Parachilna overnight & left early to arrive at the gorge very early morning. Not only was the scenery exceptional in the morning light but there was wildlife everywhere.
We saw a large group of yellow footed wallabys as well as the odd lone one, kangaroos & even one emu with 8 chicks.
Every turn produced something to enjoy. One of the best Australian experiences of its type.

I have to start by confirming I have a big interest in Geology and History. This Geological Trail, 22 klms long I think, is most remarkable. It has lost of interpretative signage informing you what you are looking, type of rock, age, etc and guides to some fairly hard to see worm fossils. More signage gives more information about the formation as a whole. Be prepared to get out of the car and walk to look and take in this amazingly educational trail. Did you know the Acraman meteorite hit this area, 600 million years ago showered a layer of red earth ejecta all over the area, and formed the now Lake Acraman, look closely. Aside from an interest in this subject, the actual trail thru the Brachina Gorge is an absolutely delightful slow drive. One would be able to find a site suitable for a picnic and i believe I saw hikers walking off up a path. Free camping is available at various sites thru the gorge. It is suitable for 2wd and 4wd, you can tow a caravan slowly.

We stumbled across the campsite and then decided to walk the trail. Unfortunately, we didn't take the camera.
The track is well signposted but please stick to the track as it would be easy to get disoriented or go somewhere unsafe.
The creek beds are amazing, with the rocks all dry yet you can see that when it's wet here, it's really wet.
The interpretation boards are excellent and provide lots of useful information.
There are no toilets here. Parking is plentiful. Not wheelchair friendly. Please take out your rubbish.
Take your time, bring a hat and lots of water and communication device just in case.

This is one of the most remarkable places on the planet. We stayed for three days and every minute was a feast for the senses. I cant wait to go back! Hubby and i are sad that people just drive through in 4WDs and don't stop to read what they are actually looking at. Take the time to really study the boards and either end of Brachina Gorge - they are very well done and will explain how this unique geological formation occurred. I think you will enjoy the area so much more if you understand it. Then stop and look at the fossilized stromatolites that created our oxygen and allowed the development of life as we know it on the earth. They caused the precipitation of elements from the oceans and created our huge iron resources in the Pilbra too! Everything was flowering when we were there in spring (Sept.) and there were tiny orchids to be found. Who can walk past the tortured majesty of the red river gums without admiring their strategies for survival. The scenery is stunning especially if you can get up high.

We drove this trail from Bunyeroo. Whilst the driving was challenging at times it was an essential part of our exploration. Yellow footed rock wallabies too for wildlife watchers

This is the best interpretative trail about geology that I’ve ever seen. Simple, effective explanations about earth 600 million years ago... although you do lose about 100 million years along the way,

Driving into Brachina Gorge is like driving into a different world. The terrain looks like something off Mars - it’s beautifully barren, mountainous and the scenes are just amazing. We took our own vehicle - a ford Ranger and we had no issues and didn’t find it rough at all. But we stuck to the main loop - didn’t venture off this road onto other possible 4WD rougher roads that you could go on. Make sure to visit this if you are in Flinders Ranges.

Beautiful scenic drive with well maintained geological information boards legible from the well graded dirt road. We spotted several great looking campgrounds spaced out along the way. No phone signal, recommend going early enough to be finished well before dark, we had a tyre blow out on the way back at sunset and ended up finishing in the dark- not fun!

We have just spent two weeks in this beautiful area, we travelled spent a day in Brachina Gorge exploring the area and it was a great day with plenty of kangaroos and emus around. The area is old and historical and basically untouched which helps maintain its beauty. Take your time and drive slowly, the road is dirt but the average vehicle can easily do it.

Where can I find out about a tour of the Brachia Gorge Geological Trail? How far away is the Rawnsley Park Station from Brachia Gorge? - thanking you for your assistance
Written November 29, 2016
I would call Wilpena Pound. They have heaps of info there and would help you out. Rawnsley Park is about 30 minutes drive away from the drives through the gorges.
