Coffee Works, Mareeba Qld

Totally disappointing. Came a long way to revisit the museum, which is world class, but "Closed" for an indefinite period by the owners for no apparent reason.

The Coffee Works used to be about coffee, all the different beans and blends and history. Now you get to see half a dozen jars of beans on the way in, with nothing to suggest that they are anything other than somewhere to store the beans for the cafe.

Not being able to visit the museum, your only options are to go inside or leave. Having come a distance to be here, we chose to enter into what should be an Aladdin's cave of coffee related items, but instead, is just the usual array of tourist cups and bowls and candles and ...stuff.

There is a chocolate shop / factory where you can buy the what may well be the most expensive chocolate in Australia, but it's not that special and there is no tasting. The piece we bought is pretty bland to be honest.

They also used to make a big thing of their liqueurs, but now if you ask at the cafe they will bring a slider to you table and leave you with it.

We decided to stay for lunch. My chicken and avocado roll turned up straight away, but went cold just as fast. My wife's ham and cheese croissant took 20 minutes to materialise, despite being ready made in the bain-marie. The coffee came promptly enough but was just the standard Black Mountain coffee, which is ground by the Seven Miles group and which you will be served almost everywhere you sit to drink coffee. I drink my coffee black. The beans have to be ground just so, more so if they are single origin beans, and to be frank, mine weren't.

Coffee Works has now opened shops up in lots of other places, and so now instead of being special, instead of being an experience, instead of being a destination, its just another boring coffee shop with delusions of grandeur and expensive tat for sale.

Stopped here for our morning coffee which was delicious. Loved the rustic surroundings. The chocolate shop is to die for, spend over $40 and you get a cooler bag to keep it fresh. The liquors also delicious hard to decide on which one to buy. Friendly staff and a cute gift shop.

I come here regularly and I usually love it, i thought that my mum, sister and I could go get a coffee today. We ordered and everything seemed to be going well. I asked for an iced long black. I get this order everywhere and it’s always the same, black coffee in a cup full of ice. When our order came, it was mainly milk with a little splash of coffee. I’m really intolerant to dairy, luckily I knew right after I had a sip that it was cows milk. I feel horrible giving this rating, but I am really disappointed.

My happy place... Coffee Works in Mareeba. Coffee and Chocolate does one need anything else in life? ☕️🍫

Great little local attraction with a large assortment of coffee bean to choose from and smell as well as a chocolate shop and a antiques/souvenir store all rolled into one

Had a delicious iced coffee and ice chocolate which was great!

Stopped in for a coffee to see if it is as good as the local bean we get back home. The place is chock full of arbitrary items for sale and it is hard to find the prices. Would be better if they focused more on coffee related goods? The coffee was not bad but we prefer a zestiest brew with more chocolate notes.

Very cool place tucked away. Quaint little shop and a coffee museum to wander through. Coffee bean sales at entry which can also be bought online. Cafe doesn’t have a great range of food on offer but we all found something to eat. Travelling with teenage boys. Highly recommend.

We just drove all the way from Cairns to discover that Coffee Works was closed due to Corona Virus. This we can understand but had we known prior, we wouldn't have made the trip. Staff did provide some liqueur and chocolate samples but there were no coffee or tea samples. The cafe is still open, as is the gift shop but be warned, things are expensive!!

My husband and I were staying in Mareeba for a few days and decided to have a coffee at Coffee Works. We were disappointed. We ordered 2 small flat whites, one double shot and one single as the girl serving could not advise us of the strength. One suggested that their coffee is smooth. We now know ‘smooth’ means ‘weak’. We had to wait for over 20mins. My husband had to go and ask when our coffee would be ready. He was told that our docket got pushed to the back. You’d think a business with such a high turnover of customers would have a ‘system’ to prevent that from happening. To appease us, the girl bought out 2 chocolates. This was definitely a waste of $9.60 and our time. This business appears to be more interested in selling trashy trinkets than making decent coffee. If you’re heading south, the best coffee we found was at Whistle Stop in Yungaburra. Do yourself a favour and keep driving past Coffee Works.

Dear Depq2013, Thank you for your visit and your review. We are saddened to hear of this experience with us. We apologise for the time you had to wait for your coffees and our Team Leader tried to correct this for you and your husband by giving you the chocolates. We hope we can welcome you again in the future. Have a delicious day !

We only had just over an hour and would have happily spent longer here - very interesting for coffee and chocolate lovers particularly but I imagine a lot of people, even if they aren't coffee lovers would be amazed by the range of paraphenalia they have in the museum, an interesting and unusual attraction

Well worth the dollars spent! Buy an all-in-one ticket and you can sample the huge array of Aussie coffee AND some the excellent chocolate that compliments it...or the other way round.
Great venue and the museum is fascinating...you never knew there were so many different percolators, grinders and makers in the world.
