Myself and my boyfriend came here for a day. The island itself is beautiful, but in order to do anything you have to spend a ridiculous amount of money. The ferry from Townsville cost $90 . The transport is terrible. Especially considering you cannot get around the island by foot is more like a small town . The bus only come every other hour . Myself, my boyfriend tried to get a taxi to somewhere that was nine minutes away and they charged us $20 !! , You Can rent a tiny car for Ridiculous money and then Force added extras onto like insurance!!

This island is only good if you have a car to take of your own !

Biggest problem for us was my research beforehand online and even speaking to Townsville locals that it was dog friendly but it’s definitely not. You can’t use the hop on bus, you can’t access the most popular walks or destinations with a small lap dog on a leash or carried. Car hire on island also doesn’t except dogs so better to leave pooch at home as only the ferry is dog friendly.

What an I missing? A pretty location and I very much enjoyed the Fort Walk, however the island is very tired looking and reminds me of Surfers Paradise or Airlie Beach in the 80s. Not one toilet block had soap - in these Covid times, this is simply unheard of. The food was very overpriced and to be honest, pretty terrible, including my morning coffee.

I traveled with my elderly, less abled, Mother. She is unable to walk far and does not swim, so what would a hiking, swimming, snorkeling, Island paradise hold for her? She loved it! I am not sure if it was due to the COVID pandemic, winter or because we went on a Monday, but it was not crowded at all. The weather was glorious and the day relaxing and lovely. We hired a car and drove straight over to Horeshoe Bay. There we relaxed at a picnic table enjoying the view and playing cards. Then it was off the Alma Beach, it also has a beautiful scenic park from which to see this small but picturesque beach. Then onto Picnic Bay for lunch overlooking the bay and the jetty. The lunch was delicious and a stroll out onto the jetty a must. The water is clear and we could see fish swimming around. There is a chair conveniently placed to rest awhile. Then it was back to Nelly Bay for a look through the shops before returning the car. We caught a bus back to the ferry. Everyone was so friendly, helpful and happy. It was a lively day. We ok not stayed a dew hours. We saw just about everything. Would we stay overnight or longer? You bet! You can't beat enjoying the the short drives between places, the relaxing sit at beaches and the delicious food.

Love the Island and all it has to offer, from Horseshoe Bay to Picnic Bay, Nelly Bay to West Point from lying on the beach to snorkelling to hiking.
Something for everyone, whether your hypo or hyper active!
You have beaches with seclusion or beaches with people.
Views that are spellbinding, breathtaking and awe inspiring, nature at its best.
Accomodation on a budget or without, supermarket and hire car/mini mokes/taxi/public transport.
Plenty of eateries from Horseshoe bay to Picnic bay.
Ferries every hour a short stroll from the Strand in Townsville.
Wouldn’t actually mind living here!

Reflecting on recent trip to Magnetic Island. Pretty place, a very real island. Not the place to go if you want to sip cocktails by the beach and enjoy the nightlife. Lots of restaurants closed. Wouldn’t return.

Take a walk in the bush.
Great views.
Good exercise.
Wear good shoes – running shoes are fine.
Watch your step – it is a national park not a suburban walkway!
Wear a hat.
Take water – it is often hot on Maggie island.

With every twist and turn there’s plenty to see and do along the way. From spectacular scenery across the bays to hand feeding the beautiful and friendly rock wallabies there’s plenty for all ages,
Don’t be afraid to park the car and hike the walking tracks, you won’t be disappointed. A must for all alike!

Magnetic Island, 8 km from Townsville in Queensland, Australia, has 25 km of walking tracks with spectacular views of the ocean bays through the hills of the National Park. Our favourite is the hiking over the hills from the Horseshoe Bay to the other four hidden bays: Balding, Radical, Florence and Arthur Bays. You need to be fit to hike but the effort is worthwhile. The views are beautiful, especially on looking down from the hills. However, the popular one is the newly built 4.7 million dollars Gabul Bay. It is an easy and safe elevated sea view walkway between the two popular bays: Nelly and Arcadia. There are three places equipped with free exercising equipments stationed along the way for those who still have the energy. There is also a free of charge electric stove to cook (bbq) for lunch or dinner after a walk or swim in the Arcadia Bay. We went on a bus tour and discovered some of the rugged natural beauties of the National Park and the hidden wildlife of koalas, rock wallabies and a variety of tropical birds such as ospreys, red-tail cockatoo and curlew. There are also about 20 picturesque bays and secluded swimming beaches within the National Marine Park Zone on the island. The local people are very friendly and helpful. We even got some avocados and frozen mangos from the neighbours. The services from the taxi and bus and in the shops and restaurants were above our expectations. We were always welcomed and well looked after.
Highly recommended for a holiday destination.
