About
Very personal (max. 10) nature-based Daintree River tour. Experienced, friendly and science-based information. We think the tour when on a small boat is so much better than tours on the other larger 20, 24, 30-50 seat boats that also tour the river. (Doing usual their usual one-hour croc-spotting tours while sitting shoulder to shoulder on hard bench seats). (On some boats the people are all sitting facing toward the inside of the boat). We go for longer tours (minimum two hours) and go places where many boats can't go because they are limited by time and their larger boat sizes. We get to see many magical places that they they can't. Several times over the years people have told me that their Mangrove Adventures tour was the highlight of their Australian vacation. "The Nightwatchman" is a small 6 metre, open-topped, punt with 10 comfortable swivel seats. Powered by quiet 60 hp 4-stroke outboard motor. And we don't offer any other marketing gimmicks other just passion and careing.

Dan and Jhoey were awesome. We saw two tree snakes, six crocodiles, orchid blooms and countless birds. Dan took the time to get right up on the crocodiles. At one point we were just feet from the alpha male

We did the afternoon tour and it was brilliant. Dan and Jhoey were incredibly friendly and answered every single one of our questions. They are both passionate and very knowledgeable about the river and its ecosystem. I highly recommend this tour and would happily go again.

Went for a cruise on a hot afternoon, when the nature's snoozing too under the hot sun.
Dan and his wife showed us birds nesting over the river, tree frog minding it's own business and we even managed to see a crocodile resting on land as well.
Also the athmosphere on the river was peaceful and enjoyable on its own. The boat doesn't have roof, so it's a good idea to take decent protection against the sun. Although the trees cover you quite good deeper down by the river, it still takes some time to get there and that time you're exposed to direct sunlight.
The cruise was pleasant and Dan so knowledgeable with his wife, so had a marvellous experience.

My husband and I, plus one other guest at the Epiphyte B&B took Dan's cruise on Christmas Eve. Dan is so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area and we learned lots about the various type of mangrove and their beautiful and fascinating root systems. We also saw quite a few frogs, birds, and, late in the evening, the movement of the amazing flying fox bats. At twilight, it was time to start looking for crocs, and we saw quite a few. The icing on the cake was getting to see a close-up view of Scarface, the alpha male croc of that section of the Daintree River. He is estimated to be around 70 years old and appeared to be around 15 feet long! We were out on a beautiful and clear evening so it was a wonderful treat to see the gorgeous night sky. The tour was supposed to last two hours, but Dan (with our approval) kept us for three hours. We really appreciated him being so generous with his time on Christmas Eve. What a lovely way to spend our Christmas Eve.

Dan is an expert not only in crocs but in the flora and Fauna of the rainforest. His tour is only for eight persons so every question gets answered. The best thing is that his tour is shortly before twilight and lasts till it’s totally dark. It’s a very special and exciting way to see the forest and river in this state with more crocs turning up and hundreds of bats flying above you in the dim light. Dan is explaining everything and spots with the help of Jhoey even the smallest interesting animal. Totally recommend the tour!

Dan and jhoey are the best things on the river. It’s not really croc season right now, the water is so warm that they don’t need the sun to warm up. So they only come out at night. But dan kept us learning and laughing until the sun went down and the crocs came out.

This is the one, must do tour in the daintree. We will never forget you dan. Thanks for the memories.

We took this tour 8-9 years ago and enjoyed it so much that we took our 7 yo daughter on the tour on our return trip to the area. A great experience! We saw/picked up on so much more the second time and still had questions, which Dan had answers for. Dan’s easy going and knowledgeable - the perfect guide of a beautiful evening tour. Highlight for me was watch the ‘flocks’ of fruit bats fly across the moon... and the micro bats flitting across surface of the water... Highly recommended.

This was simply the most special trip of our 3 week honeymoon.

Dan arrived at the meeting point precisely when he had promised, and was so warm and welcoming from the offset.

We didn’t come armed with specific things we wanted to learn about, so I would recommend you have a quick think about what you are hoping to see and learn, and let Dan know. He had answers to all of our questions, and his style of knowledge sharing is so pleasant and gentle. He is a true legend of the river, and is obviously highly regarded within the Daintree community.

We learnt about the history of the river, and it’s geography; from the wildlife within it, to how it formed, and the ecosystem it represents. Dan, naturally, had answers for any questions we had (no matter how simple they may have seemed to him!).

We got extremely fortunate to see “Scarface”, the local legendary 4.5m croc who patrols the waterways in tandem with Dan. Illuminating the water with his powerful torch, Dan comes into his own, navigating and teaching simultaneously.

We had the most fantastic time, and just can’t thank Dan enough for his time and wisdom. It was a great pleasure, he’s a real gentleman - it was a true highlight for us.

Thanks Dan,

Best wishes,

Elliot & Fiona
